nature defined in shadows

I find the shadows depicted in this plant beautifully subtle. if you click on this photo, you get to see even more detailed shadows. it was late afternoon over at the uplands farm nature sanctuary last weekend & the sun was hitting everything with just enough light to make anything you focused on even more perfect. this is nothing short of a small miracle when most everything at the nature sanctuary is extra fine to begin with. I'd love to know what the name of this plant is. does anyone have any idea?
if you would like to see more lovely shadow shots, please go check out hey harriet's shadow shot sunday here.
have a great day everyone!
update~ thanks to my friend over at sweet repose, the above plant has been identified as a sumac!

You are right -- the shadows are very subtle here. What kind of fruit/flower is that?

What a beautiful, rich red you have captured in this shot. Like everyone else, I'd love to know what flower it is.

Beautiful scarlet sumac bud. Sometimes I just like clicking away when I am out on a nature shoot, then come home to download and find the surprises...sometimes those are the best shots. Something so mundane, yet so profound when the eye is forced to see what it didn't see.

I am allergic to sumac so I know exactly what this beauty is! I do love the bright red flower cones which the plant produces. Your photo is so perfect for fall with all its seasonal colors on display.

No idea, sorry. It's pretty though!

This photo looks like a romantic wash of colour broken by subtle shadow! Just lovely!

That is a very unusal photo with unusual lighting...I like the way the background is like a painting.

A brilliant red for a brilliant shadow!!

you make a good point - the shadows in the flower are naturally subtle, but noticeable enough to make such a contrast, that each pod is perfectly defined.
