brooklyn bridge revisited

please click on photos to see more details

I know, we were just here yesterday but I wanted you to see what I saw when nearing the end of it on the brooklyn side. the view was gorgeous & I have to say, with all the icky weather we've been having, I felt really lucky for the blue skies and puffy cloud backdrop. please look below & check out the pretty window box I found as I walked through brooklyn heights too.
some would say brooklyn is part of new york city and officially it is, but it also happens to be on long island. so, I can say, this is a part of my world. if you'd like to see what is happening in other parts of the world, please go here.

brooklyn bridge

yesterday I had the good fortune of meeting up with two of my cyber friends alexa, from "the road is mine" and bibi, from "a yankee in belgrade". the plan was to meet up at the brooklyn bridge where alexa, who resides in brooklyn would walk with us across the bridge and give us a little tour. if you've never been to brooklyn, this is a great way to spend an afternoon checking it out. it's even more fun if you go with nice people who are such excellent company. bibi's friend marianne came along for the tour too, so there were four of us with cameras stopping every two minutes to take a picture. & I'm not sure but I think we may have convinced her to start her own blog.

here we are discussing a map of nyc.

belly of the beast

this is how a native milwaukeean described the inside of their uniquely designed art museum. I also thought it happened to be a great shot for shadow shot sunday too. for more lovely shadows, please go here thanks to tracy over at hey harriets.
below is another interesting view of the inside of the art museum. isn't this place cool? I found walking through this clean well lit interior so relaxing. have a great sunday everyone.

chihuly

please click on photo to see chihuly's work up close

I couldn't not share this with you. remember the milwaukee art museum? this is something that was inside it, a beautiful piece by dale chihuly. everyone in the room seemed to be drawn to it. my husband commented that he wanted to touch it. I wanted to photograph it. what type of art do you like?

sky from plane

I took this photo as I flew home from milwaukee. looking at the sky while literally being
in the sky gave the term "sky watching" a whole new meaning. to see more beautiful skies from all around the world please go here.

milwaukee art museum

please click on photo to see more detail

last weekend I was in milwaukee for a wedding. luckily the city's art museum was within walking distance from our hotel. designed by santiago calatrava, the museum's pavilion looks like a huge sail boat docked on the shore of lake michigan. in order to gain access to the upper most "deck" you must walk across a bridge that is suspended over one of the cities major roadways. personally this added to my feeling that I was about to board a grand ship. I found entering this structure in this way quite thrilling. once inside I found the interior equally wondrous. check out the view of lake michigan from the inside of the art museum.

into the wild, sort of

please click on photo to see pigeons faces up close

that's what it felt like when I pulled into the parking spot beside where all these wild pigeons were hanging out. though my camera wasn't able to capture the whole line up that sat atop the full length of this fence, you can see many on the ground as well as the dozen or so that are more noticeable. when I started snapping their picture they began flying all around me. I felt like I was in a scene from hitchcock's "the birds". watching as they continued to hover above me definitely sent some shivers down my spine.
today is abc wednesday and the letter for today is W. I picked the word wild to describe both the birds and my spine tingling experience with them.

please go here to see more W representations, thanks to mrs. nesbitt.

laguardia airport

waiting to board our plane last friday I had time to sit down and snap photos of people walking by. everyone seemed to be smiling. I wondered if it was because they were traveling to a sunny destination or perhaps they were just happy to get out of new york.
did you know that security makes you take off your shoes and put them in a bin that gets pushed through the metal detector? so if you are like me & happen to be wearing flip flops, you have to walk on the airport floor with bare feet! this did not bode well with me at all. I guess I shouldn't complain since they didn't confiscate my tweezers or my favorite pair of tiny scissors. this is what is happening in my part of the world. if you'd like to see what is happening in other parts, please go here.

flying over the long island expressway

please click on photo if you'd like to see blurry details

my husband & I just got home from a wedding in milwaukee. it's always fun to go traveling, but it's really good to be home, even if it is still raining. as the plane looped around manhattan I looked down at the western most tip of long island & I thought how lucky I am to live here. how was your weekend?

US Open Stories, Cabrera 13th Hole

Angel Cabrera, former US Open and current Masters champ, during the Tuesday practice round, was dropping balls in the rough and practicing chipping them out. When he flubbed one, a fan called out some advice. Cabrera turned to the fan and mockingly offered his club as if to say “here, you try it!” The crowd loved it, and I was lucky to have just snapped the picture. This is not an uncommon type of fan-pro encounter at Bethpage, which has become famous for its New York Style Golf Fans.

please welcome my brother george as my first guest host here at long island daily photo. I had a feeling he would have a good story to tell! please scroll down to see his other photo below.

fan queue at the us open

a big thanks to my brother George for sharing

The fan queue shows a modest lineup of signature seekers who wait near the crosswalks that the pros funnel through to the next tee from each green. Many of the pros oblige, and sign hats, flags, programs, and other items.

remember I said my brother was volunteering as a marshall at the us open? today he is also my first official guest writer and photographer here at long island daily photo. thank you george!

v is for valero

please click on photo to see gas prices more clearly

and the price of gas is definitely going up. this still isn't so bad considering we were paying four dollars a gallon not too long ago. how much do you pay per gallon where you live?
today is abc wednesday and I hadn't anything to post for the letter V until I drove by this place on my way home last night. for other V representations please stop over here, thanks to mrs. nesbitt.
it's wednesday everyone. we are officially half way through the week, yay!

and the freaky weather continues...

yesterday rain accompanied the commuters rushing to catch their trains. it was a grey wet monday morning. by early evening the only evidence of rain were the puddles on the street. the railroad station and its parking lot were almost entirely cordoned off from the regulars in order to make way for all of the ticket holders coming into town for the us open. no one seemed to mind. with so little space for people to wait to pick up their commuters, everything seemed to move quite smoothly. there were lots of police directing people and traffic and a white tent set up where people could wait for a shuttle bus to take them to the golf course. hopefully there will be sunshine the rest of this week for the golfers!
this is a part of what is happening in my world, if you'd like to see what is happening in other places around the globe, please go here.
thank you Klaus & your team, sandy, ivar, wren, fishing guy & louise for that's my world!

soon there will be cherry pie

we have a lot of cherries again this year! remember last year? it took us hours to pick them, wash them, pit them and then finally bake them. & last year my dear sister-in-law was helping! I shudder to think about the labor intensive work that lies ahead with regard to our yearly ritual. I know, it's not as if anyone is twisting my arm - but have you ever tried fresh out of the oven cherry pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream? if you haven't, than I highly recommend you do so asap.

art and shadows

notice the peep hole in the door behind the art

now through july 25th the "site specifics" show is being held at the islip art museum's carriage house. free to the public I found the modern art on display most intriguing. with the dreary grey weather we've been having, I was lucky one of the art works on exhibit included a nice shadow. I think the shadow was actually part of the art itself since lights were set up strategically to cast one on each piece, of which there were two. if you'd like to see more shadows or share one of your own, please visit the great shadow shot sunday meme right here.

and thank you miss tracy from "hey harriet" for another fun shadow shot sunday!

me at the us open

thanks for taking this photo ian

unfortunately this may be as close to it as I will get. & now that it is almost here it's hard not to get excited about it. earlier friday afternoon state troopers had this road overlooking the course completely blocked off. I imagined tiger woods taking his practice shots as I waited in traffic with the rubberneckers. last evening my son & I rode our bicycles down this same road to take a nice long look over the golf course before the onslaught of fans descend upon the town. starting monday the u.s. open begins and many roads in the surrounding area will be closed, including this one. I like watching golf every so often but my brother loves it so much he has taken time off from his job to volunteer as a marshall. I think that is pretty cool. I can't wait to hear his stories.

bongos

please click on photo to see bongo drums up close

I remember wearing jeans named bongos when I was in high school. so naturally that's what I thought of when I saw this night club with the same name. then I remembered how I used to always want to learn how to play the bongos. if you click on this photo you'll see a set of bongo drums underneath the club's name on the awning. I wonder if that means they actually have live music here featuring bongo drums. which reminds me, has anyone seen the movie, "the visitor"? there's a lot of bongo drum playing in it. if you are looking for something really good to watch, I highly recommend it. though maybe you should check out the trailer here first.

unusually unique rose

please be sure to click on photo to see vivid colors up close

that is, if it is a rose. I am not entirely certain, but if it is, its orange center looks very unique to me. does anyone know if this is indeed a rose? we inherited this bush when we purchased our home. this is the most blooms it has ever had so I had to share it with you. today is abc wednesday, and the letter is U. if you'd like, please go here to see more U representations. but most importantly, have a good wednesday!

water tower?

please click on photo to see tower up close

does anyone know what this is? I am guessing it's a water tower but I don't know for sure. it doesn't look like most of the other water towers on long island, but what else could it be? I took my car to get serviced yesterday morning and found this standing right outside the shop. so, what do you think it is?

peony scented garden

please click on photo to see more details

mr. santilli, the creator of the "today's flowers" meme recently invited me to participate by posting a flower. anyone who knows my name can probably guess how much I love flowers, so naturally I jumped at the chance! if you happened to see my post from yesterday, you may also guess that I spent my spare time in the garden this last weekend. lucky for me I was able to catch one of our peonies in full bloom. if you'd like to see more beautiful flowers, please go here. happy monday everyone.

shadows in the garden

please click on photo to see shadows up close

yay! we had sun today! this year it is taking me forever to get all my plants in their pots. a good side effect though is, at least I found some shadows. if you'd like to see more interesting shadows, please visit tracy's wonderful shadow shot sunday meme
here.
so, do you like to work in the garden?

long island railroad under water

please click on photo to see raindrops up close

yesterday's photo should have looked more like this having actually been taken yesterday morning. but I wanted to show you a pretty blue sky in anticipation of the summer weather we have yet to look forward too. hopefully the weather people are correct and we will have sun today. do you ever mind rainy days?

t is for toys

please click on photo to see more window details

a nostalgia store with lots of very old toys, many complete in their original packaging. I love places like this. recently the public library in our town had a professional appraiser give a talk about his profession. he told his audience nostalgia always sells, especially if it is reminiscent of something dear to the buyer's childhood.
this post is a part of the abc wednesday meme. if you'd like to join in or just ponder other representations of the letter T, please go here.
so what about you? have you kept any special treasures from your childhood?

town clock

please click on photo to see clock details up close

this clock actually has the name of my hometown labeled in gold on the top of its face. as the sun was getting lower in the sky, it seemed to illuminate this lovely time piece hinting that I should take a photo of it for my blog. this is a typical day for me in my part of the world, always looking for the extraordinary in my wonderfully ordinary life. to check out what is happening in other parts of our world, please go here and visit "that's my world", hosted by klaus, and his team, sandy, ivar, wren, fishing guy and louise.

anyone have a light?

please click on photo to see gnome up close

I know this may be politically incorrect but I figured I could get away with it since he is a gnome after all. I happened across this guy at nurseryland, the same place I visited last fall to take pictures of pumpkins.
this little gnome looked like he was sunbathing while smoking his pipe. remember the
gnomes I found in cvs last winter?
