is there such a thing as a joyful gargoyle?

or joyfully mischievous? technically I'm not quite sure if he can be considered a gargoyle either. I found this amazing face on the side of a giant urn in the sculpture court at the metropolitan museum of art .

I think I detected a little "joy" at the corners of the mouth, and surely a twinkle in the eye.

My guess is Bacchus, the god of wine! Imposing figure, indeed!

I dunno, Lily. One of the things that came to mind when in Europe was how angry and hostile the gargoyles look.

I like this one!

I haven't been to the museum in a while. Hope you had a good time there, Lily!

He is quite mischievous and joyful looking. That is a great piece of sculpture.

This does seem a well-disposed gargoyle.

Come and see the Joys of our Lives, have a lovely day!

He looks lecherous ...

I think he looks joyful because he's been drinking wine. It looks like grapes all around him, so (I agree with Greensboro) he must be bacchus. He has a very sly look!

Yes, wine, he must be Bacchus! Have some Madeira, my dear......?
Great post for J-day, thank you,

I love the Met, and what is so cool about your photo, is that you are drawing our attention not to the obvious art on the wall, but the art and design of the building as well!
