water tower in long beach

I love this water tower in long beach. it's so different from the ones I usually see on long island. recently it provided the perfect opportunity for a unique shadow shot too.

skyscraper reflections in levittown

I remember when this was built some time in the late seventies - I'm guessing. it was such a big deal because it was thought of as a skyscraper, unusual for these parts. my husband just told me the original plan was to build four of them.
today super sized strip malls surround it.

a skywatch study in contrasts

early this morning we had snow flurries that stuck to everything except the sidewalks and roads. by 11am all the snow was gone.

5pm I walked outside with priscilla and it looked like this.

today is skywatch friday, if you'd like to see more skies from all around the world or if you'd like to add your own sky, please go
here, thanks to klaus and his team, sandy, wren, fishing guy, and sylvia. happy skywatch friday everyone!

whatever happened to the marlboro man?

does anyone know if he still exists? the only one I know of these days resides over on ree drummond's excellent blog "pioneer woman" and as far as I can tell he's never smoked in his life.

b is for birds, the seagull type

please click on photos to see more detail

I was minding my own business, sort of, when a large group of seagulls flew up behind me. I fumbled for my camera hoping to get their reflection in my car window, but it was too late, they were too quick. depressed I didn't capture the photo op, I sat in my car for a minute wishing I hadn't missed it. as I drove through the lot I saw a another large group of seagulls hanging out. it seemed too good to be true. I slowly drove towards them stopping a good distance away so as not to frighten them. as soon as I stopped my car, the entire group flew directly towards me. I immediately opened my car window, and started snapping away. much to my amazement, they in turn settled down surrounding me all lined up on the pavement, most of them looking towards me, expectantly. and then the sun came out creating their shadows. and they waited patiently while I took a few dozen photos of them.

before I left, I thanked them for making my day, because they truly had.

today is abc wednesday thanks to our host mrs. nesbitt. the letter for the day is B. please go here to join in the fun.

morning frost

Howitt-Track-in-Farmingdale-on-Conklin-Street

the weather yesterday morning was so strange. frost covered the ground and cars, yet as I walked to my car it felt unseasonably warm outside. for the rest of the day we had high winds and rain until the late afternoon. our poor priscilla does not like winds that howl. she spent the better part of the storm curling herself up into a ball trying to move as little as possible.

today's post is a bit of an homage to the great eric tenin who started the city daily photo blog when he created his paris daily photo blog five years ago this march. I started long island daily photo shortly after I found eric's blog. I couldn't help but think of him when I snapped this photo.

soho, ny skyline and johnny depp

this first photo is dedicated to today's skywatch friday, taken in soho, ny this last monday.
check out more skies here, thanks to the wonderful team of skywatchers, klaus, sandy, fishing guy, wren and miss sylvia.

this second photo is dedicated to jay over at the depp effect, a charming blog that always makes me smile. hi jay!
if you have time for perusing an excellent take on greg house, from the television series "house" - I suggest you read Jay's post here. it really is quite insightful, thoroughly enjoyable writing.

and lastly, I decided to post this one below so you can see how everything fits together nicely.
I hope this movie is as good as it looks. though if johnny depp is in it, I am thinking it must be!

a is for apple, as in the big apple

left bank books, how cool is this place?
it is no secret to previous visitors of this blog how much I love manhattan. this last monday I found myself spontaneously visiting some of my old haunts in the west village. I was amazed at the flood of memories I experienced - seeing places I haven't been too in years. while I remember many a book store throughout lower manhattan I can't say for sure if I've ever been to left bank books. and oh my, what a pleasant surprise this place proved to be! there was a sign on the door that said something to the effect of, "we're a mess, knock if you'd like to come in" only, we didn't read it until we were half way through the door, but thankfully the proprietor welcomed us anyway. there was such a good vibe in this tiny little store and what did we see before us upon entering, but a book my son and I both immediately knew was meant for us to buy. to make matters even more astounding, it was 70 percent off!
you can barely see the top of his cap but there was a cute looking gentlemen hiding behind the stack of books on your right. he said it was ok for me to photograph the shop as long as I didn't photograph him, warning us he was a fugitive of the law.
I love ny.

Long Island Lives: for the love of driving

please click on photo to see Big G up close

my dad, likes to drive, a lot. so when he grew tired of his towing business he took a job as a school bus driver. 18 years later at the young age of 76 and much to the surprise of everyone, today will be his last day - he is officially retiring. when he gave the big news to his elementary school passengers, one of them said, " oh really, when are you coming back?"
I have a feeling he will be sorely missed.
when asked how he will fill his new found freedom, my dad said he plans on volunteering his driving skills to seniors in his local church transporting them to and from doctor appointments.

jets win and lingering snow

please click on photo to see snow pile up close

I wonder if it will be gone after the rain we've had both yesterday and last night. I love how this grungy snow pile shoved into the corner of a parking lot refuses to give it up!
so, who is happy the jets won?

shadow portrait in rome and a long story too...

I snapped this photo last summer while in rome especially for shadow shot sunday. at the time I thought, maybe I'll save some of my italy pictures for winter time when it's cold and I want to have warm thoughts. it was a hot sunny day as I stood there taking in the cobbled street, but with the snow falling outside my window, it is hard to imagine. the cobblestones are so uneven in most of rome that you get a workout just trying to navigate them properly. I have a friend who said she ran a marathon on these streets - that, is really hard for me to imagine!

tree design in sky

yesterday as the sun was setting I looked out my bedroom window and saw this fireball of light in the distance. I wish I knew what caused the red color in the upper left part of this photo. it looks like a reflection but I know it couldn't be since I opened my window to take this photo. does anyone have any ideas?

suburban scenery

please click on photo to see more detail

this is not an uncommon scene here in the suburbs of long island. various types of industry mixed in with strip malls, a mini garden and a lone residential house make for an interesting landscape. I often wonder who wouldn't mind living next to giant smoke stack on a major thoroughfare. perhaps they don't have a choice or maybe they don't mind at all.

z is for zoom

in my last post, you could barely see this from a distance. zooming in created a nice contrast of texture between the sea and ship. I imagine it would be especially great to see this through a much more powerful lens, though I still like this effect regardless.

today is abc wednesday thanks to our host mrs. nesbitt. the letter for the day is Z. please go here to join in the fun.

frozen jetty on long beach

yesterday we looked towards the boardwalk from long beach, today we are facing the amazing atlantic ocean. notice the seagull standing on the partially frozen jetty? if you click on this photo you can get a better view of the huge ships out on the horizon as they make their way towards manhattan.

like christo

please click on photo to see more detail, photo courtesy of my hubby anthony

I'm not sure exactly what is happening to this building in long beach but my husband said it reminded him of the work of the great artist, christo. fellow blogger, daryl, from out and about in new york city, happened to post something about christo just yesterday. She has a wonderful shot of "the Gates" he & his wife created in manhattan's central park. you can go here if you'd like to check it out.

last christmas photo, maybe...

please click on photo to see shadows up close

I'll admit it, I am a christmas straggler. so I was very happy to see this wreath and its lovely shadow still gracing this school a few evenings ago while driving home.
today I am finally taking down our christmas tree. I will miss the pretty lights but I will like the lack of christmas clutter too.

weekend reflections at the day spa

please click on this photo to see reflections up close

james over at newtown area photo has a way of finding the most beautiful reflections. I think it may be because he is very talented and has a good eye for the really unique ones. I find this meme to be helpful in making me look for things I'm not sure I would see otherwise. I was happy to spot this one at the racine day spa the other day.
hope you are all enjoying the second day of the new year!

talk about a bird's eye view...

do you see them up there? if you click on this photo you may notice a row of birds, I'm guessing pigeons, up on top of the very hard to miss sign in this photo. this sign is also hard to miss in real life. I guess the birds are making the best of this snowy day. can you imagine their view? it snowed most of the day yesterday, so the sky was a blank sheet of grey, pretty in its own way. happy new year everyone!
