Brooklyn's Metropolitan Avenue

I've only been to brooklyn a few times so I can't even say for sure exactly where this is, other than it's on metropolitan avenue. we did cross over a small bridge to get there and although it wasn't that far from farmingdale, it was a distinctly different neighborhood. I found this sign to be very appealing - I can't wait to go back and take more pictures.

shadows on 7th avenue

this was the view from the coffee shop I ate at while in manhattan the other day. the architectural details on the building were highlighted by the sun and shadows. within minutes everything changed as the sun made its way across the sky.

christmas reflections

it's hard to believe another holiday season is upon us. this was taken the day before thanksgiving in manhattan. we had a quick lunch at this hotel's coffee shop and noticed many people talking about the parade. meanwhile christmas wreaths among other festive decorations were already up and ready, anticipating the holiday season.

sunset over jericho turnpike and black friday

I feel we have been spoiled this autumn, weather-wise. it hasn't been too cold yet and the skies for the most part have been blue. all in all it's been a spectacular fall season.
meanwhile today is black friday, the day where many people in the united states traditionally spend the day after thanksgiving by going shopping. this is something I am fairly certain I have never participated in - though come to think of it, I may have done some shopping on the internet! so what about you, have you ever participated in black friday?

south of houston and soho cobblestones

the  neighborhood in lower manhattan we now know as soho was formerly known as 'hell's hundred acres'. in 1968 this area was redefined by a group of artists who found the area on a map referred to as south of houston street or 'soho'. the many industrial buildings in this area, once used as factories and sweatshops were ideal for artists to use as work and living space. in order to obtain the rights to legally live in a manufacturing zone, the artists formed a group called 'the soho artists association'. as a result, not only did the neighborhood get a new name, 'soho' - to this very day, a rule still exists where one must be an artist - albeit a wealthy artist, in order to live in a loft in soho.
below is a photo of a view on houston street, (pronounced how-stan) a wide roadway that runs east and west from manhattan's east river to its hudson river. when I took this photo I was standing on soho's side of houston looking across the street towards greenwich village.

leg lamp lighting in northport

this photo was taken a couple of sunday's ago when I photographed that yellow painting in portofino's. just down the block at northport hardware company, ian and I discovered what looks exactly like the leg lamp from 'a christmas story' on display in their window. according to laurel and lily's shopkeeper, every year there is a tradition in the town of northport to commemorate the lighting of the leg lamp. there is actually a vdeo documenting the celebration on youtube as well. this year the lighting will take place saturday november 27th at 7pm and all are welcome to attend.

the beatles on iTunes and a very mellow yellow monday

I absolutely love this portrait of this iconic band. luckily I photographed these dashing young men at the very same moment a lovely woman happened to be strolling by wearing a yellow scarf - qualifying this photo to be entered into drowsey monkey's mellow yellow monday meme. please stop by mellow yellow monday if you are at all interested in the color yellow.
have a great week everyone, I hope it's a short one.

reflections with jennifer aniston and her crew filming wanderlust

if you look carefully, you can see her long golden locks flowing down her back - and that my friends is my big photo op of jennifer aniston! pretty funny I know. what's even better is if you look at the reflection in the window you can see the crowd of people that were standing across the street as well. if you'd like to see more reflections or add your own to the mix, please check out james of newtown area photo's wonderful 'weekend reflections' meme. thanks james!
ian and I were (seriously) minding our own business as we passed this movie set in the west village the other day. then we saw the throngs of paparazzi standing across the street. you can't miss them since they all have gigantic cameras and stand together in a group. I asked one of the camera wielding men what was going on and he said it was jennifer aniston acting in the film 'wanderlust'. below is a picture of one of the paparazzi. and below that is a shot of the building j.a. was being filmed in.

sky over northport

I have never heard of scudder park until last sunday when searching for a road to get us closer to northport's harbor. I shot this photo while standing on the small beach looking up at this awesome sky with my back to the water. if I stayed in my car, I could have driven up to the edge of the beach and just enjoyed the view from the inside of my warm and cozy car - which may be an option for me when it's freezing out. you can see a map and info here if you'd like to see this pretty place with a wondrous view in person. I also took the liberty of downloading one of my photos there too.

laurel and lily's of northport

remember the painting I posted from portofino's the other day? after the cafe, as ian and I walked through the town we found this beautiful florist and garden shop. it was like stumbling upon a treasure. the first thing you see upon opening the door is a christmas tree decorated with such wondrous imagination you feel a bit like you've walked into the wardrobe from the chronicles of narnia. the setting was made complete by a heavenly and welcoming soundtrack playing at just the right volume. the friendly (but very busy, decorating) shopkeeper was welcoming as well not batting an eye when I asked him if I could take pictures. he was also kind enough to stop and chat with us a bit, making us feel doubly welcome. it turns out laurel and lily is hosting a holiday celebration along with their neighbor's heartichoke, another delightful shop right next door. the celebration begins friday & saturday november 19th & 20th from 10am - 9pm and sunday the 21st from 10am - 5pm. refreshments will be served. lily's address is 145 main street in northport village.
* this is not an advertisement, just a wonderful place to go and check out if you're into this sort of thing.

shades of red among other colors...

carpets of leaves seem to be everywhere with all of the recent rain we've been having. I don't mind rainy days so much in autumn. for some reason the beautiful colors seem to be extra saturated making even a grey day look pretty.

early christmas

I believe I may have figured out why this home always seems to be decorated so early - usually like the day after halloween. I am thinking the people who live here might be a step ahead of everyone else decorating when the weather is warmer so they aren't freezing their butts off - decorating after thanksgiving like everyone else. if this is the case, I think it's a great idea.
I can only hope that some day I will be this organized.
you'll never guess why I posted about this house once before. well, maybe you will. it was because they are also one of  the last  in the neighborhood to take their decorations down.
it's nice to see such christmas spirit.

pipolo at portofino's

ian and I stumbled upon a cozy little place on main street in northport early last evening by the name of portofino. the atmosphere was cozy and the hot cocoa was delicious. we also enjoyed the artwork by the artist mary pipolo. for more of all things mellow, please visit drowsey monkey's 'mellow yellow monday' meme.

comedy cellar in greenwich village

thursday was a beautiful day to stroll through greenwich village with my son. walking down macdougal street, we stopped in front of the comedy cellar and I told him the story about how his dad and I saw ray romano do stand up there before he was famous. it's fun to reminisce.

quiet in the woods

have you ever noticed how quiet it can be in the woods? it always amazes me when I find an outdoor public space that is relatively quiet here on long island. I hope you've been enjoying my photos of the massapequa preserve. I have a few more coming up for this weekend. I was there last sunday again and the remaining autumn colors looked especially beautiful against the blue sky.

biking at the massapequa preserve

here you see a bicyclist riding over one of the bridges that crosses the waterway that runs parallel with the trail at the preserve. soon the leaves will be gone and it will be too cold for riding bikes. I hope you are out enjoying the sunshine and good weather while it lasts. did everyone remember to set their clocks back?

sunrise over route 110 in farmingdale

luckily I was able to get this sunrise wednesday morning before all the rain started.
it's hard to believe it's the fifth of november already. another year is coming to a close and winter is headed our way. at least this weekend we get to set the clocks back. I always feel well rested for a few days whenever we gain that extra hour.

perfect lady in red texas sage

Autumnal-Blooms-Lady-in-Red-Texas-Sage

salvia coccinea is its official name. I bought a few of them for my larger planters last year. over the winter they reseeded themselves inside the planters and I wound up with a couple of dozen. I planted the extras in my flower garden. they grew nicely enough until the heat abated, then they bloomed and thrived like crazy. I have been enjoying them immensely.
