a mellow yellow winter

looking at this pretty house decorated by mother nature helps dispel weary winter doldrums. this was taken the morning after last week's big snow. I drove around my neighborhood for a bit taking pictures and couldn't seem to get that winter wonderland song out of my head.

the shadows were abundant at tartine in the west village. it was as if the sun came out especially for us to enjoy as we sat in the cafe overlooking 11th street. for a wonderful little pick me up, we each had the sublime but not too sweet hot cocoa and split a huge almond croissant. it was the perfect antidote to all of the arctic weather we've been suffering through!

I am so trying to reconcile myself to the fact that we haven't even gotten to february yet! lucky for me I had to wake up early so at least I didn't miss out on all the snow when it was still fresh and beautiful. these two scenes were photographed yesterday morning around 8am.

when I saw this pink scooter in yesterday's snow, I crouched down to take it's picture just as this woman was walking by - it was a thrilling moment to say the least as I caught her in the frame. isn't she beautiful?

this is what springtime looks like...

I was looking through all of my photos from this last weekend, all of which had snow and ice in them, & I thought, no! I cannot bear (even the thought of) anything remotely related to snow this morning. I don't know about you, but at this point I am definitely suffering from snow fatigue! so, I searched through my archives and when I came upon this vision of loveliness, I thought, yes! there is hope! and it is only 56 days away!

as I passed cold spring harbor yesterday, I had to stop and photograph these boats frozen in place. surfing on a wintertime atlantic

standing on the boardwalk in longbeach last saturday, I noticed what I thought was a kite in the sky until I looked over to see there was a man attached to it while surfing! it was hard not to watch him, a few times he became airborne (with the help of his giant kite) as he navigated the rough waves. have you ever heard of people surfing in such cold weather? this was around 9am yesterday at the starbuck's parking lot in farmingdale. the long island railroad was running late and traffic was nonexistent. by the early afternoon the main roads were mostly clear but many of the side roads were still covered with snow. how was your commute yesterday?

I love how this menu is designed from la bonbonniere, a diner in the west village in manhattan. below is a photo of the counter space there. it's got a cozy kind of atmosphere and the food is good too.

thoughts of summer, the perfect antidote to a frigid mellow yellow monday and new york portraits

during this past weekend I noticed this tiny begonia hanging on in its flower pot from last summer. while noticing the perfect yellow, of course I immediately thought of mellow yellow monday. please be sure to stop over there and visit if you are at all interested in all things yellow.
I also thought it would be nice to turn our thoughts away from the cold by sharing with you a print I just received from kitty over at new york portraits. last summer while perusing kitty's blog I saw she posted a print that I absolutely fell in love with. it's one of those pieces I could just look at again and again. I immediately wrote her and asked her if she had any plans to sell her photographs. she wrote that she had and was planning on doing so sometime in the near future. long story short, guess what I got for christmas? if you love photography and would like to see some amazing photographs, please visit new york portraits. kitty has a great eye for capturing an authentic new york portrait. every day that I visit her blog and look at her work I am reminded of why I love new york and the people that live here. check it out, isn't it amazing? thank you kitty!

thankfully yesterday's snow didn't stick much. though you can see it covered some of this wall of snow I posted about here. most of it is hard as a rock since we had that bit of rain on monday which quickly turned it all to ice. isn't winter grand? at least the snow showers made all the ugly snow pretty again.

if I am lucky, I will take down all of my christmas decorations later today. the season goes by so quickly, yet I always feel renewed after everything is cleaned up and put away!

twelfth night & the 'yummy' belly bomb cake...

tonight is 'twelfth night' the official end of the last twelve days of christmas. some people see it as a cause for celebration, though I believe most are back at work busily living in the new year. as for me, I am reliving my christmas memories while I look at the hundreds of photos I've taken in the last 12 days - this being one of them. behold, our family's traditional 'belly bomb' cake, also known as the 'famous chocolate wafer cake, ' renamed the 'belly bomb' as a result of how everyone's belly feels after indulging in a slice. actually, one slice doesn't make you feel so bad - it's the second slice that does. but who could resist? this definitely qualifies as being quite 'yummy'! if you'd like to see other representations of the letter Y, or if you'd like to add your own Y representation please visit 'abc wednesday' . 

this is what it looks like after everyone has a slice. I don't know why I didn't take the plastic wrap off for a nicer presentation! the official recipe doesn't include adding sugar to the whipping cream. I always add a small amount to taste, because let's face it, the tasting is the best part. I also add the vanilla to the cream before I whip it. here is the official recipe.

other than thinking of new year resolutions over the weekend, I passed this scene driving to fairway on sunday. it doesn't seem that long ago, that people were still out here whacking golf balls around. we did have a warm autumn, I wonder when the last round of golf was played?

I guess most people don't need to worry about this in the winter!
has anyone noticed, the days are already getting longer? I noticed last evening the sky wasn't completely black at 5:10pm - a welcome relief considering it is officially winter here in the states.

2011 at jones beach

I took a quick trip to the beach yesterday afternoon with my son and twin nieces and found out there was hardly any snow near the ocean - & the parking lots had practically zero. while we were there, ian decided to write a message near the water's edge. I hope your new year is filled with peace and love. happy new year everyone!
