first off, I'd like to congratulate sandy and cosmo for winning the peter lik book! andthank youeveryone for participating too. and while I'm at it, thanks also to the random number generator- picking a winner was quick and easy. I'm looking forward to seeing peter's show tonight. I love nature photography and I think it might be fun to see a professional in action.
in other news, sadly, march has shown no signs of exiting like a lamb. nothing a big pot of soup can't cure - which brings me to one of my favorite recipes, potage parmentier. I first heard of this soup when I read the wonderful julie & julia book by the infamous blogger julie powell. the ingredients are so simple I remember thinking, how could I possibly screw this up? plus it is mostly made from potatoes, one of my favorite foods ever invented by god, ever! of course there were no leeks at the market the day I decided to do this so I substituted scallions and have never tried the leeks. one day I promise I will. I also use organic turkey bacon as a garnish as you can see in the photo below. and I should add, we must always have a piece of buttered brick oven bread on hand to use for dipping. it's serious comfort food. if you'd like to try it, click on my chicken scrawled recipe to make it easier to read. stay warm everyone!
that is what I call this patch of blue... 'kindred spirits'. among the first flowers to show up in my neighborhood every spring, I always look forward to them each year with immense joy. over the last several years, I've witnessed these little sprites easily triple in number. aren't they delightful? this post is a part of the abc wednesday meme. if you'd like to see other representations of the letter K, or if you'd like to add your own K representation, please visit 'abc wednesday'. also, please don't forget to enter my giveaway by posting a comment under last saturday's post. you can access it from the sidebar by clicking on the beach picture or by simply clicking right here.
we had a bit of warm weather I don't know, sometime not that long ago but it's been chilly lately, cold enough to need gloves at least. thankfully the sky has been blue and the trees are budding. I even found a little nest while looking up at the trees. can you see it? please don't forget to enter my giveaway by posting a comment under last saturday's post. you can access it from the sidebar by clicking on the beach picture or by simply clicking right here. also, to share a part of your world or just see more of others, please go to "that's my world tuesday". a big thanks to klaus for hosting with his team of helpers, sandy, wren, and sylvia.
this was taken when I was at the hick's flower show the other week - perfect for mellow yellow monday, I thought. please don't forget to enter my giveaway by posting a comment under last saturday's post. you can access it from the sidebar by clicking on the beach picture or right here. at last count there were only 13 entries so the odds are very good to win the amazing photography book by peter lik. & don't forget also, to join in all the mellow yellow fun today by popping on over to drowsey monkey's mellow yellow monday meme. have a great week everyone!
I came across this at the metropolitan museum of art last week when my husband noticed something amazing about this steel strongbox. he wanted to know how anyone managed to save this key for so many hundreds of years? I would really love to know too, I bet there are some interesting stories. check out the other interesting details on the box below.if you'd like to see more shadows or if you want to join in the fun, please visit hey harriet's shadow shot sunday meme. a big thank you to tracy for hosting shadow shot sunday.

today people all around the world are celebrating earth hour at 8:30 pm. for just one hour we can practice one way to conserve energy by taking action against climate change-by simply turning off our lights for one hour. going out this evening? why not unplug everything in your house? ok, maybe not the fridge, but you get the idea! for more inspiration, please check out the 'official earth hour' video below.
I wanted to re-post this photograph in honor of today's earth hour since it is one of the most beautiful hidden gems on long island. on a side note, if you'd like to see more reflections or add your own to the mix, please check out james of newtown area photo's wonderful 'weekend reflections' meme. thanks James!
in celebration of today's earth hour, I am giving away a beautiful bookby the australian landscape photographer peter lik called, "spirit of america". the weather channel offered this giveaway to help promote mr. liks' new reality tv show. paraphrased from the w.c.,"...the show will follow mr. lik as he travels across america photographing how weather has a unique impact on landscapes in hawaii, alaska and death valley among other off the map places. peter will share his photographs and techniques while searching for the "perfect shot" as he overcomes weather related obstacles.
I thought this might be of interest to people who love nature, photography and a talented photographer willing to share his knowledge. check out the book here, it really is quite beautiful. I am hoping maybe the weather channel will give me one too!
so, if you are interested, please leave a comment hereon this post. and if you'd like to follow me, I'd appreciate that too, if you aren't already that is! I will announce the winner next thursday march 31, the day peter lik's show debuts on the weather channel. good luck everyone!
I love the spirit of this video, the music is perfect too.
it's hard not to mention that we had snow yesterday. happily the end of the day resembled little of its morning. it was enough snow where I actually had to remove it from my car before I could drive it. that said I was glad I at least didn't have to shovel the sidewalk. this was from a few days ago when the sun was trying to make an appearance. priscilla was ecstatic to be outside. if you'd like to gaze at more wondrous skies from all around the world or if you'd like to add your own sky, please visit the skywatch friday meme, thanks to klaus and his team, sandy, wren, and sylvia.
I was sad to hear about elizabeth taylor's death. I've always admired her sassy courageous type personality. I got the chance to see her in person years ago when she made an appearance at macy's herald square in manhattan to promote her fragrance. I was working in the store at the time as a visual display artist on the main floor so I didn't have to fight the crowds to get up close. she was married to the blonde construction worker and I remember they wore matching glittery looking black jackets. when she made her entrance, the crowd went wild. she had such charisma. she looked genuinely happy and she looked radiant. she said a few words, answered a few questions, it was just fun. rest in peace dear elizabeth. go here to see some touching photos of a true legend.
or joyfully mischievous? technically I'm not quite sure if he can be considered a gargoyle either. I found this amazing face on the side of a giant urn in the sculpture court at the metropolitan museum of art . this post is a part of the abc wednesday meme. if you'd like to see other representations of the letter J, or if you'd like to add your own J representation, please visit 'abc wednesday'.
this is one of my favorite places to just sit and chill out. I think this might be the european sculpture court. does anyone know? I'll find out for sure and update this post later today. to share a part of your world or just see more of others, please go to "that's my world tuesday". a big thanks to klaus for hosting with his team of helpers, sandy, wren, and sylvia. thanks Channal for confirming by your comment that this is indeed 'the european sculpture court'! & thanks everyone else for answering each other's questions!
today is the second day of spring, aleluia, aleluia, another reason to celebrate being alive! pictured here, surrounding the stoic bunny, are one of my all time favorite flowers, the lovely 'ranunculus'. today is also mellow yellow monday. if you feel so inclined, please visit drowsey monkey's mellow yellow monday meme to check out all things yellow. & don't forget to add your own bit of yellowness too.
I guess it depends on who you ask. sometimes change doesn't feel so good at the time it is happening and then when all is said and done, everything works out for the better. I can tell you one thing, I am glad today is the official first day of spring here in the u.s.a. & don't worry, I was a passenger when I took this photograph. this post is dedicated to'sunday bridges' thanks to louis la vache fromsan francisco bay daily photo. please visit louishere if you'd like to join in the fun.
on the way into manhattan last night it was almost 5 pm and the sun still seemed so high in the sky, perfect for casting interesting shadows.if you'd like to see more shadows or if you want to join in the fun, please visit hey harriet's shadow shot sunday meme . a big thank you to tracy for hosting shadow shot sunday.
earlier this friday evening people seemed to be out in droves reveling in the start of a brand new weekend. maybe the unseasonably warm temperatures we had today inspired everyone to get out and about. I heard one report of a man walking shirtless through central park. if you'd like to see more reflections or add your own to the mix, please check out james of newtown area photo's wonderful 'weekend reflections' meme. thanks James!
this is where my taxi driver was literally falling asleep at the wheel. I noticed when he let an opportunity to move out of the jammed up traffic go by that his eyes were closed, he may have been snoring. I would have just gotten out but I really wanted to catch my train home so I woke him up instead. when I asked him if he was sleeping he spoke some sort of gibberish and then suddenly snapped to attention. only in new york... if you'd like to gaze at more wondrous skies from all around the world or if you'd like to add your own sky, please visit the skywatch friday meme, thanks to klaus and his team, sandy, wren, and sylvia.
I love taking pictures from a taxi when I'm in manhattan. I just sit back and click away! earlier today as we drove passed central park I realized these bleachers must have been set up for the saint patrick's day parade. I can only imagine how crowded this same spot will be tomorrow.
remember munday's luncheonette where I had my first waffle in keeping with this year's resolution to eat more waffles? of course I went back for what I believe was my fourth waffle of the year, only to find out the whole place was decked out for saint patrick's day, & quite splendidly I might add. this post is a part of the abc wednesday meme. if you'd like to see other representations of the letter I, or if you'd like to add your own I representation, please visit 'abc wednesday'
it's not often I'm out taking pictures and I find someone smiling straight into my camera! and such a beautiful smile indeed. last friday hick's nurseries opened their annual flower show and it seemed like everyone on long island decided to go. I guess I'm not the only one ready for spring. to share a part of your world or just see more of others, please go to "that's my world tuesday". a big thanks to klaus for hosting with his team of helpers, sandy, wren, and sylvia.
if you want to see how art inspires artists you must check out the heckscher museum of art's, "identity crisis". do so quickly though, the show runs through march 27, 2011. go here to read a thoughtful reveiw of the show by sylviane gold for the new york times.
in other news, today is shadow shot sunday. notice the interesting shadow cast by this beautiful marble bust.if you'd like to see more shadows or if you want to join in the fun, please visit hey harriet's shadow shot sunday meme . a big thank you to tracy for hosting shadow shot sunday.
the inside of this cafe in huntington looked so clean and inviting and the geraniums in the front window box inside were exquisite, the perfect touch. if you'd like to see more reflections or add your own to the mix, please check out james of newtown area photo's wonderful 'weekend reflections' meme. thanks James!
unfortunately the sky wasn't so blue today, mostly it rained on and off. luckily I snapped this sunrise one bright morning earlier this week. presently I can hear the wind howling outside, hopefully tomorrow we'll get to enjoy some blue skies.if you'd like to gaze at more wondrous skies from all around the world or if you'd like to add your own sky, please visit the skywatch friday meme, thanks to klaus and his team, sandy, wren, and sylvia.
the name daniel seems so obvious here on the computer screen but I didn't notice it while I sat in a taxi admiring this beautiful entranceway somewhere in manhattan. I guess I was too busy looking at the evergreens. do you see it?
when my son was in middle school he participated in daffodil days, a nationwide program that raises funds to fight against cancer. each student would buy flowers to give to special people in their lives and the proceeds went to the american cancer society. ian always gave the flowers to his teachers (which made me very proud). since they are among the first flowers of spring, I love the idea of using daffodils as a symbol of hope.
it's hard to believe these are made for human consumption. has anyone ever tried these? & if so, are they any good? today is mellow yellow monday and though I'm a bit late in the day there's still time to head on over to drowsey monkey'smellow yellow monday meme and join in the fun.
have you ever gotten those eye drops from the eye doctor where they make your pupils gigantic so when you go out into the sunshine you can barely see? this is what I saw after I left the eye doctor the other day. I wondered at the time if the photo would be in focus so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was. if you'd like to see more shadows or if you want to join in the fun, please visit hey harriet'sshadow shot sunday meme . a big thank you to tracy for hosting shadow shot sunday.

I'm not sure if it was just being on an idyllic mini vacation that distorted my thinking, but this was the friendliest llama I've ever met. he was in this small shed with the goats on the goat farm I visited. when I asked him to smile for the camera he actually showed me his teeth! sorry for the blurry picture, but I had to show you this.
I know it wasn't that long ago since my last waffle picture but I just wanted you all to know this past weekend I made sure to keep my new year resolution to eat more belgian waffles. as you can see by the above photo, it wasn't all that difficult. today is abc wednesday and the letter for today is G. please stop by mrs. nesbitt's abc wednesday meme to join in the fun. this week is already flying by. which reminds me, do you believe it's march?
hildene is the estate of abraham lincoln's only son's summer home in vermont. while the estate is mainly a historical place to visit, the visitor center also rents snowshoes and cross country skis so you can walk the trails across the grounds in wintertime to visit their goat farm. it just so happened to be 'kidding' season while we were there and once at the goat farm we discovered a barn full of momma goats and their babies. what surprised me was how domesticated they were. there were half a dozen women there who stay with the goats around the clock until each baby goat is born. what was truly amazing was seeing the goats acknowledging their helpers, walking up to them and nudging them for attention. it was the sweetest thing, as if they were saying, thanks for being here. to share a part of your world or just see more of others, please go to "that's my world tuesday". a big thanks to klaus for hosting with his team of helpers, sandy, wren, and sylvia.
You have heard of LI & its many stereotypes? You wonder if they may be true but wish not to risk visiting in the event that they are. Be bold then & visit me daily & I promise I will show you many sides of Long Island that you will be both amazed & inspired by.
