memorial day parade

I wish I had some good shots of the veterans walking in the parade yesterday. everyone applauded them as they marched by. one of the vets thanked everyone for coming out. it was very touching. it was equally touching to see others marching in the parade paying tribute to the men and women who have lost their lives serving our country as well.

blue sky over conklin street

I took this from my car with my iphone. it's hard to see but there were three guys in three cherry pickers up there in the sky working on that telephone pole. I imagined them to be very hot as they labored in the afternoon sun in today's balmy temperatures.
as you can see, the sky was remarkably blue and luckily stayed like that all day. there was a threat of thunder showers but thankfully they never showed up. Yay!

it's official, after more than two months of spring sky consisting of a dreary blanket of grey, our weather is now identical to englands! although it doesn't seem to deter these golfers dedication to their sport earlier this morning. and it sure beats golfing here.

inspired by van gogh

notice the tagline, 'a cut above the rest'. as we walked by, my son made an observation about this company's capitalizing on vincent van gogh's mental illness. I guess the distance of time makes his suffering ok to poke fun at. perhaps being a fan of van gogh makes me a bit more sensitive to this tactic but I must admit seeing the ear being moved by a dolly in this illustration made me smile.
whatever the case may be, the idea of having someone else do your moving for you is always appealing to me. however I have not always been able to indulge in the extra costs involved in such luxury. most times I just rent a van and do the heavy lifting myself. the next question inevitably is where does one get the van one needs? a quick google search dispensed a zillion opportunities but one stuck out that made it possible to arrange such luxury. at the risk of sounding greedy, may we have some more sun please? I really do feel as if I live in england. today is another dreary grey day and the temperature has dropped as well. heck, it's probably sunnier and warmer in england. maybe I should forget the sun and just be grateful the world didn't end yesterday.

at first glance these doors look as if they are mirrored but if you look closely you can see a set of nicely laid out tables through the glass. the weather has been absolute crud here on long island, raining constantly. I was glad to venture into manhattan where I found some interesting things to photograph despite the drizzle.

a hairy poppy about to burst

by this time last year many of the poppies in our garden were already in full bloom. I remember taking a picture of this one when the morning light turned every blooming poppy the most intense beautiful orange I had ever seen. this year everything seems to be popping up later.

I took about half a dozen photos of this light bulb before ian asked to borrow my camera and with just one click he came up with this. he has such an amazing eye.

a tulip surprise in my backyard

I completely forgot about planting these striped yellow tulips last year. the yellow was so bright I could see its vivid color waving to me from across our yard. just like the president finding bin laden, it was a nice surprise.

it was so quiet during boston's 'rush hour' I kept looking at my watch in disbelief trying to understand why people were walking at such a calm normal pace. maybe it was because I was on a sort of vacation but it seemed to me that most people in this great city actually take the time to stop and smell the roses.
