today's post is dedicated to all of the people who worked this last weekend keeping us all safe here on the east coast during hurricane irene. I feel extremely fortunate to have kept both our power and our phone service especially since people in our surrounding area are without both. god bless us everyone.
below is a photo of the typical sort of damage you see in my neighborhood. farmingdale didn't get too much flooding but we did get quite a few fallen trees. as you can see from above, thankfully the brown eyed susan's in my backyard are ok too.

the calm before the storm

I shot this two days ago in the home depot parking lot here in farmingdale. seems like I should have been inside buying  disaster preparedness supplies instead of photographing the sky. this morning my husband said the center of irene is supposed to pass right over the nassau and suffolk county border - right where we live! hopefully our electric will stay in service so I can keep you posted.

the bucolic lake montauk

I took this last june while sailing on lake montauk. of course I wasn't actually sailing the boat myself but I was indeed on a sailboat as we passed by this perfectly picturesque scene. I live in a fairly congested part of long island so it always amazes me when I see I am not very far from such quiet beauty.

fresh red velvet and east coast earthquakes

I guess by now everyone who lives on the east coast has heard a story from at least one of their friends about where they were and what they were doing when the earthquake hit tuesday afternoon. I was sitting down in a chair in a meeting with two other people, one of the two felt it & the other thought we were both crazy since she didn't feel anything. many people thought they were just dizzy or disoriented before realizing it was something outside themselves. I'm just glad it turned out to be nothing serious!

peter pan on manhattan avenue in brooklyn

last weekend I ventured into brooklyn to visit the brooklyn flea. their website said rain or shine. unfortunately the torrent of rain the metropolitan area experienced sunday was just too much and not one vendor showed up. the upside was I got to explore different parts of brooklyn while searching for a place to eat. I didn't stop at peter pan's but I like this picture. how is the weather by you?

I just found out that klaus peter, the founder of this meme, 'that's my world tuesday" passed away last thursday. my heart goes out to his friends and family.

the temple of love

this photo was taken back when I last visited old westbury gardens. while walking along a trail, I came upon the sunlight shining so perfectly on the "temple of love". as you can see below there is an entranceway to the temple. looks like a nice place for a couple to have their picture taken.

this photo was taken back in june as I lounged beneath my umbrella while vacationing out in montauk. I haven't been to the beach nearly as much as I'd like too. it's been a weird summer. I find it has been going by way too quickly.

while visiting massachusetts last weekend I happened upon an antiquarian book fair at searles castle. below is a picture I took while looking out over the backyard from the castles balcony.  I wish I could tell you what lens I used on my iphone to get these effects-it was pure accident. I think I need to take a class at the apple store!

I think we were in new york here - though I can't be certain since we traveled through new york, connecticut and massachusetts in a relatively short span of time and I was so busy looking at the scenery I didn't bother looking at the details on my iphone's map too much as we drove. this is a sight I don't often get to see & I am always amazed when I do. it's not so far from where I live either, which is pretty neat to know such calming beauty is so close by.

irving farm coffee house

I had the good fortune of tasting some excellent coffee at the irving farm coffee shop in upstate millerton, ny over this last weekend. their mellow yellow frittata was pretty good too. much to my surprise I found out while googling irving farm coffee, that there are two irving farm coffee house's in nearby manhattan! happy first day of august everyone.
