the bridge to robert moses

Robert-Moses-Bridge

yes, robert moses is back in business! last friday hubby & I were at the beach by 9am hoping to get there before the thundershowers. other than the lifeguards and us, only two people were there. we sat right at the water's edge and spaced out for a couple of hours doing absolutely nothing. the experience reminded me of those commercials you see in the wintertime flaunting the Caribbean. it was divine.

louis la vache has posted some historic photos of the making of the golden gate bridge I think you might enjoy.

can you see the elephant?

Elephant-Rock-Sedona-Arizona

once someone asks you if you can see it, it seems so obvious. taken during my recent trip to sedona arizona, I learned they also have bell rock, cathedral rock, coffeepot rock, snoopy rock and charlie brown rock - though some say it's actually lucy - and of course here is elephant rock. I know there are some others too. I'm saving those for next time.

There should be laws against this.

Christmas-in-June-in-Deer-Park,NY

I don't know why this made me smile. If it were July, I could say "Christmas in July". But it's June. Dressing up Christmas as a Stork? a Pelican? (does anyone know what type of bird this is?) does not disguise the fact that we are nowhere near Christmas, at least not in Deer Park on Long Island.  Ironically I came across this dandy item at the Christmas Tree Shop, a discount store that I believe is named as such not because they stock Christmas items year round (or trees for that matter). I believe the name is designed to evoke the Christmas feeling one experiences, at least in our capitalist culture, while shopping the amazing deals found inside. Look at what you can get for just a $1.99! Maybe they're onto something here?

at the hummingbird house in sedona

Hummingbird-House-Sedona-Arizona

check out this creative idea for a chandelier. below is a close up of a small display that you can also see in the lower right of the above photo. I love the colors and dramatic lighting. this is the beautifully designed gift shop I found the antique postcard in. I love the name of this place too.

fruit kabobs anyone?

Summer-Barbecue-with-Fruit-Kabobs

it says a lot when someone like me pigs out on fruit - especially when there is homemade cheesecake brought to your home (thank you theresa!). I don't know what exactly it was about the fruit salad being on a stick that made me want to eat one after another, but I did and I enjoyed it immensely. my sister-inlaw brought over at least 40 of these delicious kabobs a couple of weekends ago which only goes to show how much she loves us. thank you lorraine.

Sunset in Sedona at Airport Mesa, First Day of Summer and the Year's Largest Supermoon

Solstice-Supermoon-and-Sedona-Sunset-at-Airport-Mesa

According to National Geographic this year's Summer Solstice will be followed by the year's largest Supermoon - how exciting is that? Apparently our Moon will be the closest to the earth sometime in the wee hours of this Sunday morning making it the biggest and brightest moon of the year.

Antique-Iowa-Postcard

Antique-Iowa-Postcard

whenever I happen upon a stack of old postcards I always think of christine's blog 'the daily postcard'. I've written about christine before on my blog and although she posted her final post last november - her ideas and insights into postcards still inspire me to look for the ones with the messages on their backs. you can imagine my delight when I found this one in sedona's hummingbird house gift shop. the saying on the front is lovely and the fact that it was sent to lizzie from bonnie in what looks to be the year 1910 is even sweeter.

the vortex and sedona's kachina woman

Sedona's-Kachina-Woman-Vortex

kachina woman is the pillar like rock formation to the left. legend tells us she is balancing the canoe on her head that her dad carved out of cottonwood to keep her safe from a flood that was prophesized to wipe out their village. kachina survived the flood and went on to bear a son who in this picture, is represented by the smaller rock formation that she is looking at to the right (if you look carefully you can see there is a man standing atop it).  sedona is home to a vortex energy that many people have experienced as they hike what is believed to be sacred ground. this trail in boynton canyon is said to be the only male/female energy vortex that exists in america. when I got up to the top of this small mesa at the base of mama kachina, with my husband and son, I stood in awe admiring the beauty of the red rocks surrounding us - but nothing vortexy was happening. I should say I felt very happy and at peace in sedona which at the time I more or less attributed to its awesome natural beauty and welcoming nature of its residents - the people in sedona were very friendly to us. content to feel this sense of peace, ian and I hung out at the base of kachina woman looking out towards the incredible view, including anthony who was sitting at the base of her son. suddenly a huge gust of wind whipped up around us for several minutes as if to say, here you go - any other questions miss lily?! the wind was so strong it blew the hat off my head. bits of rock and red dirt and dust were flying everywhere! I grabbed onto a tree to insure I wouldn't be blown off the top of this mesa as well - then we all looked at each other and started laughing. "could this be the vortex?" I wondered aloud. after it was over we realized there was no wind before or after this event. I looked on youtube to find out how the sedona locals feel about their vortex and found this short video here. check it out, there's nothing like hearing it from the locals.

a bulletin board in sedona

Altar-of-Love-Sedona,Arizona

when we first thought of going on vacation, my family & I decided to stay in sedona and take day trips, like visiting the grand canyon for instance. but once we spent the day at the grand canyon, we realized there was so much to do in sedona we didn't want to leave. most days we wound up getting lunch at their local grocery and one day while waiting for my order I was impressed by what constituted their community bulletin board. so, as you can see, there is plenty to do in sedona.
and for the record, we pretty much just went on lots of hikes on different trails.

would you care for a massage with that UFO?

UFO-Center-Sedona,Arizona

I shouldn't be making jokes since had I not met a certain someone who informed me that the people who run these ufo night tours (complete with night vision goggles) do in fact see ufo's every night they do their tour. at one point ian and I were good to go on one of these tours but then this same person told us it was just the government testing out their new top secret aircraft. I don't know about you but if I'm going to pay $100.00 to see a UFO, it better be from another planet.

Bright-Angel-Trail-Grand-Canyon-First-Tunnel

I saw this group of young girls from a distance posing just outside of the first tunnel and I was pleasantly surprised to find my camera able to zoom in on them. I hope someday in the distant future they somehow find this photo of themselves and see how others might have seen them on the day they ventured into the grand canyon on the bright angel trail in the spring of 2013.

I can now cross this off my bucket list...

Bright-Angel-Trail-Grand-Canyon

last week a dream I was not sure I would ever see fulfilled came true. getting to see the grand canyon in person and actually spend the day there superseded all of my imagined expectations. we started out at grand canyon village by el tovar and then drove through the park, stopping at several viewing points throughout the day. I found the various viewing points outside of the village to be less crowded and equally breathtaking. hours later when we were about to exit the park, I didn't want to leave! if I had a sleeping bag (and the courage) I think I would have camped out under the stars. I will post more pictures of this awesome place later this week.
so this is why I had trouble posting last week! the resort we were staying in guaranteed us they had wifi but they neglected to say it was only during certain unpredictable times of the day - if I happened to be sleeping or hiking or whatever I would miss my opportunity. on the plus side, I haven't been this unplugged in a very long time so maybe that's a good thing.

art school confidential

sorry for my sporadic posts, I've been a little disconnected/preoccupied at the moment but I hope to be back here on a more consistent basis in a few days. meanwhile, I have scheduled a couple of posts just to stay connected.

this is a perfect example of exactly how talented the kids are that ian is lucky enough to attend art scool with. just for fun and on the spur of the moment a friend just felt like creating something so he decided to make a portrait using the wall and some electrical tape.
