gun control on the viking fleet ferry

No-Firearms-Allowed-on-the-Viking-Fleet-Ferry

this is the second time in the last two months I've seen a signpost similar to this. the first one was in arizona when we stopped at an overlook on the way to the grand canyon.  upon seeing this notice I suddenly found myself wondering exactly how many people around me might be carrying a gun - a thought, I will admit, that never occurred to me before. the photo below was taken aboard the viking fleet ferry while waiting to depart montauk for block island.

still life with fire extinguisher

I couldn't help noticing this colorful little nook while exiting the viking fleet ferry on our way to block island recently. notice the red pamphlet entitled "escape to block island"? makes total sense to me.

love at first sight

Biscuits-and-Bath-Doggie-Daycare-and-Retreat

first there was this, all the doggies except for the few very curious, waiting for their trainer's return. oh my gosh, could they be ANY freaking cuter??? look at this one below. I wanted to walk in there, scoop her up and hug her and all her curliness. priscilla would understand... I think.

the longer I stood there taking pictures, the longer this guy stood there staring back at me. I felt like I was looking into the eyes of my soulmate. this all happened last friday night when I drove into manhattan to visit my sister-in-law and found free parking directly in front of the doggie daycare/retreat for pups known as biscuits and bath.

flowers the size of dinner plates

Flowers-the-Size-of-Dinner-Plates

right here in farmingdale, I passed by these beauties while out walking priscilla. aren't they gorgeous? I spotted these very same flowers with a different color scheme while vacationing in block island three years ago.

I love this place

Swimming-at-Robert-Moses-Beach

this scene was from a couple of weeks ago when I was still working up the courage to completely submerge myself in the ocean. I can be such a scaredy cat about feeling like I'm being stabbed with icicles - at least that's what diving into the antlantic sometimes feels like to me. anyway, I finally dove in this morning and it was fabulous! not too cold, very refreshing and soon after I was starving. I forgot how hungry swimming in the ocean makes me feel. below is a photo of the lifeguard building that was being rebuilt during one of my recent visits. evidently sandy destroyed the old one.

a block island landscape

Block-Island-Summer-Landscape

I love old buildings and block island is full of them. it is also full of idyllic scenes of rolling hills with tall grasses and clouds casting moving shadows over them just like you see on television commercials via time lapse photography. I've included another view of this scene below so you can see the old buildings that sit behind the big white house.

block island revisited

Spring-House-and-Block-Island

deep in the thick of winter these are the type of images that come to mind when I long for summertime. even the foggy new england weather is beautiful to me. this is the front lawn of the spring house hotel on block island. visitors need not be guests to sit in the adirondack chairs, anyone is welcome. I just got back from a short trip there with my hubby. it was awesomeness at its best. more about block island tomorrow.

just what the doctor ordered

Magic-Hour-at-711-in-Farmingdale

doesn't this look fake? like it's from a movie set or something? I think it must be the magic hour light - everything was just glowing. whatever the case may be, those are sweet sweet storm clouds in the distance and supposedly they are going to usher in a much needed break from the prolonged heat we've all been experiencing. Oh goody.

the heat wave of 2013...

Entering-the-Queens-Midtown-Tunnel-During-a-Heat-Wave

how many days have we been in this heat wave? I walked out my back door at 7am this morning and it literally felt like I was walking into an oven - yikes! poor priscilla hasn't been taking her daily walks this week which I believe might be causing her to act a bit stir crazy. I bring her outside but she lasts two minutes before barking at me to let her back into the house.

coffee at tula's

Tula-Kitchen-Bayshore-NY

I'm a sucker for attention to detail and exquisite service. suddenly a $4 cup of coffee seems like the norm. yes, I always have my artisanal decaff with my half and half poured from no, not from a carton but from my own individual creamer, accompanied by the finest of raw sugar served in it's very own (just for me) cut glass sugar goblet employing the tiniest of teaspoons.
anyway... I loved tula kitchen's decor, service and especially their healthy food choices.

jesus and friends at the metropolitan museum of art

Jesus-at-the-MET-NYC

a funny thing happened while visiting the MET last weekend. anthony & I had gone to see some favorite paintings of ours and as I stood staring at this one, a man's voice began whispering emphatically into my ear. he implored me to notice that everyone - with the exception of jesus - was staring at the viewer. "...while jesus's gaze averts ours, ever so slightly, looking down to the side. fascinating, isn't it?", he continued. had the man not been so completely serious, I would have burst out laughing in the split second it took me to realize his voice wasn't my husbands.  I held back laughter and respectfully nodded in agreement as the man finished by whispering, "ok then, enjoy," and then quickly walked away.

my green slushy

Green-Slushy-Via-the-NutriBullet

inspired by the abundance of fresh cucumbers my dad has growing in his garden I decided yesterday was the day to pull out all the stops and make time for something I've wanted to do for ages; pull out the brand new nutribullet my parents gave me for my birthday last february. besides, I like being cool & lately I keep hearing the buzz about how hip it is to carry a green drink en route to wherever it is hip people go too. yes, I am now officially hip! I should tell you that my recipe isn't the greatest and was a bit slushy at the end. perhaps I didn't drink it fast enough but I couldn't stomach drinking the slushy end of it and using a spoon didn't seem the least bit appetizing. being that I'm in favor of not wasting nutrients, I decided to mix it up again in the bullet with a bit more water which turned out to be not too flavorful. I have some ideas on how I can tweak it. I'll keep you posted.
(thanks mom & dad, I love my nutribullet)

all amounts are approximate since I don't measure well and often alter things as I go
my hipster green drink ingredients:

1/2 of a cucumber
1 cup raw spinach
Braeburn apple
1 stalk celery
1 carrot
filtered water

friday night at the MET

Friday-Night-at-the-MET's-Roof-Garden

except, it was last friday night! I wish it was as sunny tonight as it was then and the light was incredible. yes it was humid, but it wasn't too humid - it felt like a summer evening should feel. to see other skies, please visit here.

this scene reminds me of a seurat painting. I guess it's the grainy subtle colors involved.

Cherry Pie and Homemade Ice Cream

Cherry-Pie-and-Homemade-Ice Cream

I don't know what it was about this year's cherries, but six out of the seven pies I made this season came out awesome! The bright red you see in this picture is pure unadulterated goodness. Well, except for the sugar, almond extract, tapioca and lemon juice of course! Normally I make two or three pies at the most but there were thousands of cherries this year and if I had the time, I could have picked even more. If you've ever been as challenged trying to make a pie crust as I have, I will be posting a no fail very easy pie crust recipe later today. Oh, and now that the cherries are gone, I'd like to learn how to make a coconut cream pie. I'll keep you posted.

Ok, here it is! and believe me when I say, this recipe is easy! A little tip, when you lay the crust into the pie pan, don't be afraid to push it down into the pan. This helps the crust stick to the bottom  allowing you to pull the wax paper up and away from it - leaving the crust all snug and stuck to the bottom of the pan.

and while on my way to the MET last friday...

A-Girl's-Best-Friend-Dogs-in-NYC

sorry for the blurriness of this picture but I thought this was too cute not to share. I was approaching a red light (& they were walking by so quick!) and hoping I'd get a chance to capture their unbelievable cuteness from this big man holding the hand of his precious charge and a little girl leading her best friend.

nighttime hydrangeas

Nighttime-Hydrangeas-in-Farmingdale

I shot these last evening with my iphone. I was trying to capture how brightly lit up these hydrangeas remained as everything else quickly turned to shadows. I am equally amazed at how well they are doing during this current heat wave we are experiencing too.

What To Do During a Heat Advisory

Red-Flags-at-Robert-Moses-Beach

It was a dreary grey morning but I decided to take my chances and listen to the weather report's promise of sunshine and head to Robert Moses very early on the 4th of July. This picture was taken just as the sun was starting to shine.

at the MET roof garden

Imran-Qureshi-at-The-Met-Roof-Garden

visiting the MET's roof garden is high on my list of top ten things to do every summer. and being it's the 4th of july weekend, most new yorker's are out of town so the drive in was nothing short of sublime. I'd say the topper was finding a parking space just around the corner from the MET - but the topper was the roof garden itself along with the perfect summer evening weather. please visit here for more info about the museum's current roof garden exhibit

Cherry Pie in the Sky

Cherry-Pie-and-Skywatch-Friday

Like jewels in the sky the cherries from our tree in our backyard are more abundant this year than ever. As you can see behind this perfectly ripe cherry, the birds or raccoons or squirrels or possums have been busy out here picking cherries too. My cravings kick in just looking at these beauties - tonight let there be cherry pie
Happy 4th of July everyone.

for the brave firefighters of arizona

Desert-Bloom-in-Sedona-Arizona

when my family and I were on vacation recently, (not too far from where the brave firemen lost their lives) it quickly became apparent to us how fire was a very real danger in this desert land. it was not uncommon to see no smoking signs posted in outdoor "fire danger" areas. I met a woman who told me it can sometimes be difficult for her to breathe outside when they burn the control fires there. I remember thinking at the time that their concerns of nature's wrath were so different from the ones we have here on long island.

I go here once a year

Bigelow's-in-Rockville-Centre

bigelow's is my dad's favorite place to get clams so we established a special tradition where we go here every year for his birthday. this year two of his grandsons came along which made it extra special.
