boston cream pie in providence

Boston-Cream-Pie-in-Federal-Hill-Rhode-Island

one night when ian was home he and his dad and I wound up watching bizarre foods in america. the host, andrew zimmern, was describing a bakery known for its delicious baked goods emphasizing its brick oven that he's never seen the likes of in all of america. at the end of the segment they mentioned it was located in providence, rhode island. you can imagine our delight upon hearing this since we knew we would be moving ian back to school just a few days later.

pictured below is what ian had. he always shares his food with me but after sampling a piece of this, I can't believe he let me have a bite - it was that good.

old house in federal hill, rhode island

Old House-in-Federal-Hill-Rhode-Island

how beautiful is this old house with the scaffolding? maybe if I visit here again I will work up the courage to ask for an inside tour (I can't imagine what I would say if someone knocked on my door asking for a tour of my house). last sunday we brought ian back to college and on the way we drove through this federal hill neighborhood to check out a bakery we had seen featured on bizarre foods america. according to wikipedia, federal hill is best known for its italian american community, mafia ties and abundance of restaurants. tomorrow I'll post more about the bakery.

can you see it?

Baby-Praying-Mantis
ian and I stood staring at the very same piece of wood and had I not been with him I am sure I would have missed what we believe may have been a baby praying mantis. clicking on the photo to enlarge it might help. in case that doesn't work you can see a close up of the insect below. sorry for the poor quality but I'm not very good with my iphone's camera. the excitement caused by spotting this tiny creature was sufficient but the caterpillar seemingly appearing out of nowhere heightened the unfolding drama significantly. you can see in picture number 3 the praying mantis took off for the end of this wooden railing as soon as the caterpillar began moving towards him yet by picture number 4, the baby pray held his ground. unfortunately picture number 5 and 6 didn't pan out well - not because I am sparing you the gory details but because like I said earlier, I am not very good with my phone's camera. in the end the caterpillar did not seem as interested in the baby pray like we feared and they both went about their way peacefully. all's well that ends well.
: ) oh, and, this is what I'm guessing that baby should look like by late october.

a fire in farmingdale and a very large spider web

Fire-in-Farmingdale

sorry for my lack of posts lately. to say I've been distracted by ian being home is putting it mildly. these photos aren't the best of quality but they do represent a slice of summer activity here on long island. for instance; evening bike rides and spider web building. last night's nearly full moon prompted one such summer evening bike ride. at my first opportunity I looked towards the night sky only to discover a white plume of smoke rising towards the moon! I was more than a little concerned since I do have family and friends that live in the direction the smoke was coming from. ian and I rode our bikes over to the scene to find out it was someone's shed that suffered a small explosion. thankfully no one was hurt.
then there was this web from a few nights ago. I am sure these spiders have been living in our backyard since we've moved here (I've heard stories from the previous tenants). when I woke up the next morning there were two more built within inches of each other

the road to lloyd neck

The-Road-to-Lloyd-Neck,NY

if you are traveling toward lloyd neck along the road overlooking cold spring harbor, (sorry, I have no idea what the name of this road is) the above photo is the landscape you will see on the right. cold spring harbor, the photo below is on the left. our weather has been very crisp and autumnal like as of late so I thought a scenic drive over to caumsett park was in order. ian just had his wisdom teeth taken out so he really isn't up for a lot of activity but it was too gorgeous outside for him to be sitting inside. a ride in the "country" was the perfect solution. if you'd like to read more about lloyd harbor, check out last sunday's new york times article here.

at the MET with ian

Petrie-Court-Cafe-at-The-MET

since ian has been home from college we've been trying to do all the things we missed doing with him while he was away. so of course this includes our traditional summer visit to the MET roof garden. last weekend his dad and I brought him to see imran qureshi's, the roof garden commission. ian loved it - and the view of course was stunning. the vibe up there is so much fun. everyone is just hanging out informally enjoying manhattan in the summertime. afterwards we dined at the excellent petrie court cafe. I say excellent because their food is delicious but not too pricey and their service is excellent.

lazy fish

Lazy-Fish-on-Block-Island

lazy fish is one of my favorite stores to wander around in when I'm hanging out on block island. I love how their displays mix the old with the new which somehow makes everything so much more interesting to look at.

field three as seen from the atlantic

if I were a proper landscape photographer you would get a better sense of how perfectly these clouds hung over the perimeter of this scene. I couldn't help noticing them while out in the atlantic standing on a sandbar.

Old-New-Car-on-I95

maybe it's because I love eggplant but I absolutely love the color of this car. isn't it gorgeous? thanks to ian who obliged my request to snap this photo for me since I was driving (him home from college)! as you can imagine his dad and I are quite happy having him home again - just for a few weeks, but hey, we'll take it!

Before and After Grandeur at the Grand Canyon

Grand-Canyon-Awesomeness-Before-and-After

Speaking of the Grand Canyon, I have often heard the canyon's colors can dramatically change over the course of just a few minutes. The two pictures I have posted here are scenes from the same general area at one of the last viewing points towards the exit of the park. We were at this particular spot for about 30-40 minutes - we didn't want to leave! I stood in awe as I watched this scene unfold before my eyes. You might be able to notice a hint of the blue color seeping into the frame of the upper left part of the top photo before most of the landscape made it's color change entirely to shades of blue as seen in the photo below. UTTER awesomness!
