morning light with autumn leaves

Morning-Light-with-Autumn-Leaves-in-Farmingdale-NY

this morning's light sent shimmers of color throughout our backyard tree. if you think this is pretty, multiply this beauty by ten and that is how it looked in person. I posted autumn leaves from this same tree two years ago here.

in the garden

Backyard-Garden-in-Farmingdale-NY

the flower pots I have around my patio are still going strong but these are the last of the flowers blooming in my garden. below you can see what is left of the echinacea. not too long ago they looked like these beauties from a LIDP post back in 2009.

backyard skywatch

Backyard-Sky-in-Farmingdale-NY

after spending a couple of hours cleaning out the garden last week, this scene nearly took my breath away when I finally got around to looking up. have you ever noticed how the sky can change in an instant? I'm so glad I didn't miss this one. for more interesting and beautiful skies, please visit skywatch friday.

why hello there mr. scary monster

Scary-Monster-in-Farmingdale

every year one of my neighbors makes an extra special effort to decorate his entire front lawn with scary monsters. I have posted pictures of his yard over the years here, here & here. countless halloweens later and this neighbor still somehow manages to make it all look new again. doesn't his house provide the perfect backdrop too?

parking lot in red

this is just around the corner from the white house pictured in yesterday's post. the reds were amazing.

I always liked this building

White-House-on-Broadhollow-Road on Long Island

If I included the traffic that was surrounding me as I shot this photo you'd think I was very lucky to avoid the hordes of vehicles just outside this picture's frame. Unfortunately there is no way to avoid the power lines too - but without them you wouldn't know this is Long Island.

a plant bigger than priscilla

Priscilla-and-The-Giant-Coleus

this is probably the biggest plant I've ever grown. I started this coleus out in the sun towards the end of spring and then moved it over here in the shade to dress up the side of the house. it seemed to like it there.

a bouquet of marigolds with something fiery red

The-Last-of-the-Marigolds
I am not an expert gardener by any means but I do love to experiment. plus there is something about digging around the backyard that is so "grounding". I took a little time thursday evening to take some notes about what worked this year and what didn't. without fail I know enough to plant marigolds every spring since they always seem to have such hearty staying power right through autumn. and, I love their earthy smell. I wish I knew the name of this fiery red plant below. I've enjoyed it all summer but I think it might have grown even bushier if I had planted it in the ground. I remember seeing it and loving it when I visited borgo argenina a few years back. of course I just had to bring it home when I discovered it at our local nursery.

someone is watching you

Farmingdale's-Cat-Detective

as I waited for priscilla to sniff every square inch of one of her favorite corners in farmingdale, I had the distinct feeling of being watched. sorry for the blurry picture, though I am sure you can tell the cat in the window is quite large.

ready for halloween

Pony-Rides-at-The-Farmingdale-Fair

last year I never got to ride the ferris wheel at the farmingdale fair. this year I made sure not to miss out. after my ride I took a walk and happened upon this pretty girl. she was so sweet!

the ferris Wheel and fireworks at the farmingdale fair

The-Ferris-Wheel-at-The-Farmingdale-Fair

taken at the end of the fireworks display, this video is only 10 seconds long. I must be getting old, it was so loud I felt like I was being shot in the chest.

Jesus at the Home Depot

The-Sacred-Heart-of-Jesus-at-The-Home-Depot

For those who believe, I guess it's not unusual to think of Jesus as being everywhere yet I still find his presence quite magical when found in between the Renuzit and the Glade on a shelf at the Home Depot, in the autumn of 2013.

the town of oyster bay

Rubbish-Disposal-and-The-Town-of-Oyster-Bay

when I was a kid, my family and I always referred to this place as "the dump". knowing I wanted to post this picture as soon as I shot it, I looked for the "proper" name of this locale only to find a sign outside the entrance that read "The Town of Oyster Bay". earlier this week I mentioned I had been cleaning out my basementI recently completed a lot of painting inside and outside of my house so I knew half of what I had accumulated down there were nearly empty dried out paint cans. anyway, as I made my  delivery of useless cans (along with other assorted obsolete electronics) to the "dump" this is what caught my eye. there is something about this scene that looks so neat and tidy to me - sort of like what my basement is starting to look like.
if you need to find out where you too can dispose of your unwanted rubbish, please visit the town of oyster bay's stop throwing out pollutants page here, aka the S.T.O.P. program.

skywatch over providence

Skywatch-Over-Providence-on-Benefit-Street

this ginormous puff ball of a cloud hanging over this tudor style building on waterman street reminds me of a visit to a book fair in massachusetts I attended not so long ago. I posted about that neck of the woods here & here. it might be the thread of new england air that ties these two places together for me since this property resides in providence, rhode island. I snapped this while visiting ian two weeks ago thinking it would be an interesting contribution to skywatch friday. have I ever mentioned how much I love new england?

cleaning out

Vintage-Glass-and-The-Pretty-New-Thrift-Shop-in-Farmingdale

I am trying! though I couldn't resist these pretty glasses at the pretty new thrift shop. at 50 cents a piece how could I? they are so light and delicate that even after the shopkeeper carefully wrapped each one up in thick newsprint, the bag was light as a feather. so, if I donated half a dozen bags of stuff from my basement but left with just one, I'm still ahead, right?

under the grapevine (with priscilla)

Under-The-Grapevine-at-Saint-Kilian's-in-Farmingdale

there is a very well kept grapevine on the grounds of saint kilian's here in farmingdale where I sometimes like to walk priscilla, who I should mention, seems to especially like walking underneath it's shade.
below you can see miss priscilla contemplating the beauty of the grapevine.

this was So GOOD!

Spindrift-at-Olga's-Cup-and-Saucer-in-Providence

I discovered this incredible thirst quencher when I was at olga's cup and saucer a couple of weekends ago. the spindrift label reads 16 raspberries, 9 cranberries and fresh squeezed lemon juice. this really was SO good - a real pick me up. I loved it.

looking outside from amy's

Designing-With-Ivy-at-Amy's-Place-in-Providence-Rhode-Island

I've written about how much i LOVE amy's place (from providence, rhode island) before - how I LOVE the breakfast there, how their orange juice is amazing, and their homemade tablecloths are a mood lifter, (especially when in need of a bit of cheer when faced with your child's influenza). I'm not sure I ever mentioned their view of this amazing ivy art. isn't it spectacular?

is there a better time of day than the wee hours of the morning? although it was just before 7am, the sun was still hanging low on the horizon, not quite ready for a full appearance. it was nice.

greetings from the pigeon club

RISD-Pigeon-Club-in-Providence,RI

yes, this is a real thing at my son's college and yes, he is a member. apparently the founders of the pigeon club are on a quest to end pigeon discrimination through educating the public about the pigeon's contributions to humankind over the years. here they are posing for the camera. I believe they were especially cooperative because I was with one of the club's members.

an old white house and olga's cup and saucer

Old-White-House-in-Providence

last saturday anthony and I took a road trip to providence, to spend the afternoon with ian. during our visit ian gave us a tour of the music building he is taking his brown class in. the brown campus is adjacent to ian's campus at risd and both colleges share classes. this makes it convenient for someone like my son who loves music - since risd doesn't offer music classes. as we exited brown's music building, I couldn't help notice this beauty.
if you're ever in need of a good place for lunch in providence, I highly recommend olga's cup and saucer. they offer a nice variety of fresh and tasty homemade type of food. it's a long walk to olga's from college hill, but since we didn't have much time, we found it to be an easy drive - plus they had cheap meter parking directly in front of their patio.
