morning fog

yesterday morning started out with fog as well as ended with fog. it seemd like one giant raindrop fell at a time every couple of minutes just as it was getting dark and seemed to keep doing so until I went out again at 9pm. it was the most unusual type of "rain" I think I've ever experienced. this scene was shot one morning earlier this autumn when we still had an abundance of leaves on the trees.

this building was colored yellow by my iphone. I snapped this while touring carnegie mellon in pittsburgh. the campus is amazing, so spacious and open with a nice variety of architecture. I was really impressed with the city. there seemed to be so much to photograph and so little time!
meanwhile I am still wondering if I will ever be able to consistently blog again. if I knew how involved a home renovation would be, I am not sure I would have done it. life is too short to have to give up the things you love to do.

I happened upon this observatory at vassar, in poughkeepsie, new york while visiting the college earlier this autumn. due to its association with the first well known woman astronomer, maria mitchell, it's considered a national landmark. though no longer used as an observatory, it now houses the education department and classrooms.

an art lesson in discovering the "day of the dead" gives us an example of how children make sense of it all. I found this happy skeleton next to yesterday's witches. I like to think that my loved ones who have crossed over are happy where they are.

ian pointed out the portrait of mr. smalls painted on the mellow yellow building as we sped by while driving on the long island expressway last saturday. we drove into manhattan so we could attend new york university's open house for prospective college students. we were very impressed to say the least. now if only we had $63,000 dollars to send him there - and that would be for just 1 year!

sorry again for my lack of posting. we are renovating part of our home and unfortunately it seems to be interfering with my blogging life. we have no kitchen left to speak of so we've been ordering take-out for the last three nights. I'm not one for eating out so much, so yesterday I went to costco and bought a fancy toaster oven. I also need to get my crock-pot fired up too. I'm not sure what I'll make in it since I've never used one before but it's got to be better than take-out every night.

beirut at terminal 5

last week I got to see one of my favorite bands, "beirut" play in manhattan at terminal 5-not exactly the greatest concert venue. their general admission does allow you to get close to the stage if you don't mind being pressed together like sardines in a can. doors usually open at 7, but die hard fans start lining up outside much earlier. the opening act starts at 8. when beirut made their appearance by 9:15 I had already been standing for two hours. a lesser fan might not think it would be worth it. but I can tell you it was definitely worth it! I've been listening to beirut for at least a couple of years now but this is the first time I've experienced them live and I have to say for me, their live performance was full of surprises-most notably how they upped the ante on their horns and drums. and oh my good good lord does zach condon know how to sing and does so with an amazing stage presence-though I should say that wasn't a surprise.

magic bars

ian is entering these magic bars into the long island fair's culinary arts contest that is being held at the old bethpage village restoration this week. as you can see I couldn't resist taking a bite.
here is the recipe;

1/2 cup butter
one and one 1/2 cups crushed graham crackers
one 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
one & 1/3 cups flaked coconut
1 cup chopped peacns or walnuts - I used walnuts

preheat oven to 350 degrees
cut butter into 6 squares and place onto 13" x 9" baking pan

let butter melt in oven almost entirely taking pan out before it starts to burn
once the butter finishes melting outside the oven, evenly sprinkle the graham cracker crumbs directly into the pan over the butter

then pour milk evenly over the crumbs
top with remaining ingredients in the order they are listed above
press the ingredients down gently into the pan with a fork or the back of a spoon

bake for 25 minutes until lightly browned
cool, cut into bars, & store covered at room temperature

last sunday we went to brooklyn to visit my mother-in-law's birthplace in williamsburg. as we exited the brooklyn queens expressway we passed through a jewish neighborhood and found ourselves traveling behind this bus. this is probably the first time I was happy to have to wait for a bus to make all of its stops. while waiting, we got to see all of the children happily running for the bus to go to school as their mothers stood waving goodbye from the sidewalk and their younger siblings waved from picture windows. the children looked absolutely adorable in their black and white clothing with their sweet curls hanging down the sides of their angelic faces. very large old brick homes stood side by side with a canopy of trees lining the street. the whole scene looked like something out of a movie.

fire island's nude beach

as seen from the top of the lighthouse, so you won't be seeing evidence of non-bathing suit wearing people in this picture. but trust me - those little figures down there, they aint wearing nothing! I don't know why but it always makes me laugh as I pass the nude beach. there is just one spot where from a bit of a distance, boardwalk passersby get a view of the nudists and there always seems to be a fully tanned man standing, hands on his hips exposing himself for the sun and all the world to see with his butt side to the boardwalk. if you didn't know it was a nude beach you might not even notice. the first time I pointed it out to my son and nieces, they panicked for a second, thinking I was taking them there.

the path to the fire island lighthouse is one of my favorite walks to take on long island. ian and I made the trip on september 2nd and although it was a perfect summer day, the subtle changes in nature's color indicated that autumn was well on its way.

I drove into manhattan last saturday to see 'freud's last session', a special treat for my son ian who wanted to see the play. as I waited at a red light I noticed this giant sculpture in front of the seagram building. I wondered what it could be. I didn't have time to backtrack so when I got home I did a quick google search and found a wonderful blog called 'nyc loves nyc' that dedicated an entire post to the subject here.

this shot was taken the day after hurricane irene late in the afternoon. ian and I headed for robert moses only to find it closed along with all of the other beaches along ocean parkway. we managed to get onto this one by pulling the car over to the side of the road and climbing across the paths through the dunes. it wasn't crowded but I did get a strange feeling like everyone was doing what I came there to do - I was checking on our beloved beach to make sure it was still there. and as you can see, it is.

today's post is dedicated to all of the people who worked this last weekend keeping us all safe here on the east coast during hurricane irene. I feel extremely fortunate to have kept both our power and our phone service especially since people in our surrounding area are without both. god bless us everyone.
below is a photo of the typical sort of damage you see in my neighborhood. farmingdale didn't get too much flooding but we did get quite a few fallen trees. as you can see from above, thankfully the brown eyed susan's in my backyard are ok too.

I shot this two days ago in the home depot parking lot here in farmingdale. seems like I should have been inside buying disaster preparedness supplies instead of photographing the sky. this morning my husband said the center of irene is supposed to pass right over the nassau and suffolk county border - right where we live! hopefully our electric will stay in service so I can keep you posted.

I took this last june while sailing on lake montauk. of course I wasn't actually sailing the boat myself but I was indeed on a sailboat as we passed by this perfectly picturesque scene. I live in a fairly congested part of long island so it always amazes me when I see I am not very far from such quiet beauty.

I guess by now everyone who lives on the east coast has heard a story from at least one of their friends about where they were and what they were doing when the earthquake hit tuesday afternoon. I was sitting down in a chair in a meeting with two other people, one of the two felt it & the other thought we were both crazy since she didn't feel anything. many people thought they were just dizzy or disoriented before realizing it was something outside themselves. I'm just glad it turned out to be nothing serious!

last weekend I ventured into brooklyn to visit the brooklyn flea. their website said rain or shine. unfortunately the torrent of rain the metropolitan area experienced sunday was just too much and not one vendor showed up. the upside was I got to explore different parts of brooklyn while searching for a place to eat. I didn't stop at peter pan's but I like this picture. how is the weather by you?

I think we were in new york here - though I can't be certain since we traveled through new york, connecticut and massachusetts in a relatively short span of time and I was so busy looking at the scenery I didn't bother looking at the details on my iphone's map too much as we drove. this is a sight I don't often get to see & I am always amazed when I do. it's not so far from where I live either, which is pretty neat to know such calming beauty is so close by.

I had the good fortune of tasting some excellent coffee at the irving farm coffee shop in upstate millerton, ny over this last weekend. their mellow yellow frittata was pretty good too. much to my surprise I found out while googling irving farm coffee, that there are two irving farm coffee house's in nearby manhattan! happy first day of august everyone.

dinner at "lunch"

today, while looking back at theses pictures I could almost taste the clam chowder pictured below. it was so good. "the lobster roll" is actually the name of the restaurant everyone must pass as they drive further into the town of montauk - but for some reason, a sign that reads "lunch" sits atop the eatery. and although it's a bit pricey, once a year we splurge and eat dinner here. the food is good and the atmosphere is casual - perfect for vacationers.

The blackberries are ready!

after great disappointment over our beloved cherry tree not bearing good fruit this year, it was a pleasant surprise to find the bramble of blackberries doing quite well in our backyard. all at once the berries are ripening! do they not look absolutely luscious? I think I may attempt to bake a blackberry cobbler this week. I'll keep you posted.

a special cake for a sixteenth birthday

my nephew turned sixteen yesterday. we actually celebrated two birthdays since he was born on his mother's birthday. his godmother brought this special cake to the party just for him and delicious chocolate cupcakes just for his mom. I felt so lucky to be around such thoughtful people. it was a fun night.

there is something about the idea of christmas in july that I always find very appealing - not that I actually celebrate it. I just like the idea of giving during this time of year. many people are just as poor in july as they are during the holiday season yet understandably so, our attention is often turned to other things during the summer. note to self - donate to my local food pantry!

this guy was just two feet away from me. every time he walked by he would nonchalantly eyeball the open bag of chips on our blanket. I could see he was calculating the risk involved if he was to just go for it and try and grab a few. he must've circled us fifty times within a space of five minutes. now that is ambitious!

long island lighthouses

inside the lighthouse keeper's dwelling at montauk point, there are all sorts of interesting displays. this one is a map of long island that shows all of the different lighthouses across the island. here you can see the young girl and woman pushing buttons that turn the lights on inside the miniature lighthouses so that they can identify where they are on the map. I never knew long island had so many lighthouses.
if you look carefully you can see the map reflected onto the plexiglass that surrounds this display.

this place is probably the most nutritious fast food place you will find in montauk - plus the food tastes good too. I ordered an orange banana creamy protein type drink. it was delicious. check out the sign they have just outside their door.

deer and their ticks are everywhere in montauk - unless you stay away from the grass and the trees and pretty much everything. one evening my family and I took a drive out to east hampton for ice cream and as we strolled down main street, we spotted a family of five deer in someone's driveway. it was a very spacious very long driveway and at first I didn't notice them until I saw a larger one from the group move. it was amazing how they blended into their environment. it was dusk so all I got was a bunch of blurry photos. I should really start carrying a tripod with me.

it's almost midnight but it's still the fourth of july so I thought I'd post a picture of the flag that stands in front of the lighthouse at montauk point. I was actually standing inside the lighthouse at the very top looking out the observation doorway. you are no longer allowed to walk around outside on the narrow walkway but you can still look out the doorway and get a very good view of long island and the sea.

below is a photo of a small stairway that leads to an opening where you can stick your head through to see a view from the very top windows of the lighthouse where the actual light shines through - you can see the light as well. the yellow step indicates the highest step you are allowed to stand on by order of the united states coast guard. anticipating good weather I decided to take a trip out to montauk where I took my first picture of the beach this summer. the weather has been perfect and although the atlantic was freezing at first, once I got over the initial shock it was glorious.
