also known as the purple coneflower. I have been seeing lots of them in bloom as of late. they are a beautiful drought tolerant flower that is fairly easy to grow here on long island. they don't require much maintenance and will easily spread themselves around your property as their seeds dry out and blow around your yard, and maybe your neighbors, when it's windy. thanks to ian I was able to post this beautiful shot of one them from our backyard.

Ah, so this is the plant responsible for all those cough and flu tablets. Apparently it can be a very beneficial drug.
