priscilla the footwarmer

priscilla sprang into action when she heard ian say his feet were cold but that didn't mean she wanted me to take her picture (see photo below). sorry for the picture quality but I just had to share her reaction to me snapping her photo as she did her good deed. poor thing, I really caught her off guard, the mili-second she saw me taking her picture she was not having it! thank goodness for priscilla, all things, considered ian is recovering quickly from his flu/pneumonia!

pneumonia, golf at the beach and thinking of spring

thank you everyone for leaving such nice comments about my last post! it's been a little crazy the last few days but the good news is, ian is feeling so much better! the bad news is he came down with pneumonia last weekend, "a complication of the flu" is what his doctor called it. but the good news is - he was home when he came down with it so he was very lucky, had he been in college he may have wound up in the hospital. apparently there has been a spike in flu cases in rhode island and many of his fellow classmates are coming down with the flu as well. when I told ian how the flu was attacking everyone at school, he likened it to him having been airlifted out of a battlefield.

in other news I came across this photo while searching my archives for something bright and cheery from long island. taken one early morning last spring while out for a beach walk with a childhood friend, we stopped for a moment to check out the view of the golf course at robert moses state park.

orange juice, paisley and influenza

in the last 48 hours I have learned more about the flu than I ever wanted to know. most of what I learned is not too pretty. like for instance, the flu lives on surfaces infected people have touched then proceeds to lye in wait hoping its next victim will touch those very same surfaces enabling it to spread its misery from person to person as it journeys its way around the world. apparently some people get the flu without actually showing any symptoms. anyone can be contagious 24 hours before they start to show symptoms and will continue to be so until their symptoms leave. since many people go back to school and work while they are still exhibiting symptoms it's a wonder it is not more widespread. then I read that everyone who is exposed to influenza is affected by it. according to this article "why some people don't get the flu" it has to do with a "behind the scene active immune response even when you don't get sick" that has something to do with a high level of antioxidant precursors in some people's blood allowing them to respond to the bug by resisting the illness.
I'm not sure there is anything I can do about the fact that I have been in close proximity to our dear son who is fighting off the flu. he's been less than six feet away from me since we brought him home, well, except when he was sleeping in his bed down the hall. and I've touched pretty much all of his personal belongings as well. and though my hands are chapped from washing them again and again I did accidentally mistake his cup for mine today. so I have decided I will remain extremely well hydrated, I will get plenty of sleep and I will eat antioxidant rich foods. then I will hope and pray that I can drive him back to school when he is well again just in case I am not one of those people who don't "get" the flu.
p.s. who would've imagined when I was here for breakfast just six weeks earlier, I 'd be back here so quickly retrieving Ian. life is funny that way.

sunrise on the new england thruway

my husband and I wound up making an unexpected trip this morning to pick up our college student who came down with a bad case of influenza. it was still dark when we left so this gorgeous sunrise somewhere in connecticut was a hopeful way to start the day.
I can't tell you the relief we feel having him sleeping on the couch at home. and the best part is his fever went down - yay!

Rose of Sharon in Winter

the sunlight was incredible today lighting up everything in our garden showing off the rose of sharon's silver like branches. it's hard to believe these branches will soon be covered in green leaves and by summer's end, beautiful flowers too. please go here to see our rose of sharon in all its summertime glory.

the good, the bad and the ugly

remember how convenient the blizzard was last weekend? the weathermen seemed to know exactly when the snow was going to arrive. it all started on a friday and the bulk of the storm happened over friday night into saturday so most people had plenty of time to prepare. and though I did hear there were some people who were stuck overnight in their cars on the long island expressway during the storm, for the most part things went fairly well for us here on long island - except for the cleanup. check out the lame attempts at clearing a path for this sidewalk, and the bus stop below - how are people supposed to get to it? and this is nothing compared to what the commuters had to endure trying to get to their trains. three days after the storm and the long island railroad probably shoveled all of two measly paths for people to get to the sidewalk that led to the train's platform. it was nearly impossible to navigate my car over the lopsided plow job in their parking lot without skidding into nearby cars. there has to be a better way. how was your area's clean up?
and not to be a complete debbie downer but check out all the trash around this bus stop that people left behind, what is that all about? I bet a large trash can might help, but that's another story.

Angels at Brown

last week anthony & I went to see ian perform in a play at his college. we got there early enough to walk through the campus next door to his. and don't let the sunny weather fool you. it is much colder in providence than it is here! check out the angels on this beautiful archway.

Roses for Valentine's Day

last summer I marveled every time I would pass these roses during the magic hour. their gorgeous red color becoming more vibrant by a late setting sun was the perfect way to end a day. happy valentine's day everyone. I hope every single one of you show yourself some extra love today.

Priscilla is my " Best in Show"

I just woke up from trying to watch the state of the union address. Don't ask me why I thought I'd be able to stay awake for that. Fortunately I did dvr the Westminster Kennel Club show but I will have to save that for another night - but not before I leave you with this. I'm sorry, I know I just posted Priscilla last Saturday but I couldn't resist. She always looks like such a girly girl when she comes back from the groomer, which always cracks me up because she is such a tomboy. See those little wet paw prints? Those are there because she loves running through puddles. These pics were taken almost two weeks ago. If you saw how she looks today you wouldn't believe she is the same dog.

montauk in summer and "america's dog show"

I thought I'd take a break from the snow and reminisce a bit over some balmy summer montauk weather instead. it's a little hard to see, but this doggy does not just have one large piece of driftwood carefully clenched between it's teeth, but two. anyone watching "america's dog show" tonight?

wait, is that a flying squirrel I see?

another richard estes inspired shot, I was so taken by the reflections happening here I initially failed to notice the flying squirrel.

Miss America

There she is...Miss America. I know, she is wearing her Halloween sweater - only because it's nice and long and protects her belly fur from collecting clumps of snow.
Every time we have a big snowfall it is tradition in our house to shovel a path in the backyard that Priscilla can run around in. Half way into making her path I figured I'd stop and catch my breath for two seconds and take some pictures of her. Would you believe she barked at me to continue shoveling her path?
Like my mom says, "Priscilla rules!"

paloma revisited

what are the odds that I would wind up taking a completely unplanned photograph of the same place I posted about - exactly a month ago today? especially when you consider this place is in providence rhode island. I can't explain why, but I love it when things like this happen.

RIP Edward I. Koch

are there any new yorkers who aren't going to miss manhattan's former mayor? he certainly left the world a better place. I had the good opportunity to hear mr. koch read sonnet 116 as a guest for the prairie home companion's live radio show back in 2011. he is one of the quintessential new yorkers who make me very proud to call new york my home. please go here for a good NYtimes article about edward koch.

jewel like design in greenwich village

this warm golden color caught my eye while walking through greenwich village during some of our dreary grey weather the other day. their enticing window design certainly cheered things up.
oh, wait, isn't today groundhog day???
