may all of your hearts be gladdened, happy passover and easter everyone.

Rabbi Brad Hirschfield said "Wine, in the words of Psalms, 'gladdens people's hearts,'" and if you can't drink wine, "grape juice is a great alternative."
our evening skies have been nothing short of majestic these last few days. I hope you enjoy this one happening over the stop and shop in farmingdale.

easter's moon

I discovered this while driving home from stop and shop early last evening. tonight is actually the real full moon though I wouldn't have been able to tell if I hadn't looked up the date. I also found out that the moon is actually moving away from us. according to the site moon information, the moon looked three times its size in our planets early days because it used to be closer to the earth. and if you've ever wondered why easter is a different date every year, it is because it is the first sunday after the first saturday after the first full moon after the equinox. I know, fascinating stuff, eh?

last snow pictures...I hope.

I'm ready for spring! and last I looked it seemed like our garden is too. this week it is supposed to be in the high 40's and sunny. might march actually go out like a lamb? oh wouldn't that be nice. these shots were taken last week right after our first spring snow.

feels like spring? and five years and counting...

yesterday marked my fifth anniversary in the blogosphere - a date easy to remember given it also happens to be the first day of spring. I remember when I first thought of blogging I had no idea where to even begin. I actually went to a bookstore and purchased the book, "Publishing a Blog with Blogger". now it's probably a collectors item. what keeps me blogging these last five years might you ask? too many reasons to list here - I'm afraid I'd bore you to tears. but I will tell you this, blogging is fun. it sort of reminds me of growing up in the 60's. as young as I was, I vividly remember being fully aware at the time that period being something of great significance. people seemed passionate and creative, sharing their ideas and opinions freely without being afraid to do so. and in the process all different types of communities were born as a result - sort of like blogging. there may be only one hundred people in the world who are so passionate about taking pictures of the sun, they would do so every day if they could. but if they happen to start a blog featuring their photos, eventually they will find the other ninety-nine - and then some. technology has made the world smaller in a very good way for those who are creative and enjoy sharing their creativity. for me, this is a really cool thing to be a part of.
so thank you my fellow comrades for joining me on this merry journey. it has been a great ride. : )

blue on blue

I photographed the design on this truck a few weeks before I found myself sitting behind this same truck at a stoplight. notice another truck making a turn onto secatogue avenue - a residential street. this part of farmingdale is literally surrounded by main thoroughfares tempting some inappropriate vehicles to use the neighborhood as a cut through.

habemus papem franciscum

it became quickly apparent the world's catholics had a new pope when saint kilian's church bells began ringing non-stop yesterday afternoon. the first jesuit priest and the first from the "americas" ever - was elected pontiff yesterday. perhaps this will be a defining moment in history. I heard that upon hearing the news the people of italy abandoned their cars and ran towards the vatican hoping for a glimpse of the white smoke. I wish I were there to see it with them.

no white smoke yet...

news flash - we have a new pope!
I am happy to report we brought ian back to college last sunday! we left at 7:30 and given the time change you can see the sun was much higher over connecticut than it was when we last approached this strip of the new england thruway. this white smoke reminded me of what is happening in the vatican right now. it's exciting stuff, electing a new pope.

rainy morning

this picture just about sums it up as far as today's weather is concerned. I was waiting at a red light this morning when I noticed the fluorescent rain coat this crossing guard was wearing to protect herself against the traffic - and believe me it is not unwarranted protection either! traffic here on long island is crazy like an ant hill. oh, and, by the way it is 6pm and it still hasn't stopped raining.

this is what spring in april 2010 looked like

taken straight out of camera, this photo illustrates the intensity of color that bursts out of all things made to be green. it had just rained when I snapped this photo (while driving through the bethpage golf course) making this scene - I am sure, all the more vivid. sorry for the bit of schmutz on my windshield.

don't forget to set your clocks ahead tonight

I don't know why I didn't believe the weathermen but yesterday's snow took me by surprise. though it did make last night's commute a pretty one to look at. by contrast today is sunny and warm with a high of 48 degrees. I am hoping the sun will melt everything by today's end. I love pretty snow, it's the ugly snow that gets tiring.

old white house

here is another old beauty that is actually a neighbor to the one I posted on monday. I am always amazed at how the sun changes everything. this photo and the old yellow house I last posted were not touched up by anything other than the sun.

Old Yellow

I love old houses and Long Island is full of them. This one in Farmingdale is one of my favorites.

nudity no more at lighthouse beach

lighthouse beach will no longer allow nude sunbathing as recently reported in the ny times. I was there last march walking the shoreline of this beautiful beach early one chilly morning, a morning that was much too cold for nudity. the last time I was there before last march was the first time I discovered it was a nude beach when I passed some old timer (literally) hanging out in all his nude glory! you can see another view of the beach from the lighthouse here.

man's best friend

you should have seen this cute popping in and out but mostly out - his masters driver's side window and very much enjoying our precursor to spring, reveling in tonight's warm winter's eve. is it just my imagination or do you feel the love too? his master's hand relaxed, hanging out the side window happy that his best friend is out and about enjoying the warm weather?
