The S.O.B.

I'll never forget the first time I gave directions to my house when I told my transplanted midwestern friend, "It's easy, just take the S.O.B. east." & she burst out laughing, "who would ever name a road the S.O.B., she demanded. For those of you who may not know, the S.O.B. stands for The Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway. The name is a tad bit misleading since one can actually only drive from seaford to syosset. Go here for some interesting history about the infamous s.o.b.

Beautiful Pic. You've yet to disappoint since I became a fan via the Newsday article. One correction, The Seaford-Oyster Bay runs North and South.

Arrghh! Mistakes really irk me, & I almost just corrected it, but then I thought, your comment adds to the story- I can't change it!
Thanks for the wonderful compliment Morty.

I never heard that road called the SOB before . Is it still a little used road as it was for many years or has traffic finally found it too. I've always like the name LIE for the really BIG Long Island road and it certainly is a lie at least as far as the word "express"way goes. Allan

Ya gotta love Long Island.
The big LIE is one I never travel any more. It really is a lie to call it an expressway, traffic moves so slow sometimes. My daughter claims I'm crazy, and it's fine - but then, she drives like a maniac.

thanks Paz, I'm glad you got a chuckle!

Allan, yes I was actually wondering if most people called it that & though I can't say everyone does for sure, there has been a lot written sbout its"nickname" on the web. I've enclosed a link in my post FYI.
& yes traffic has found it, particularly during rush hour as it is a connecting roadway from north to south or vice versa.

funny Pat!

I know what you mean Bobbie, I used to like Northern Parkway the best for its scenic design and seemingly less traffic. Then by circumstance I was forced to use the LIE on a regular basis & actually found the improvements they have made, like adding the HOV Lane are a big help. I also use the service roads alongside it, & though they are slower, they have less traffic. Just don't speed on them because I have seen the police give many a ticket there.

The parkways are the best , Southern State and Northern State and they come with a Robert Moses history . If you want to take a pretty little parkway try The Bethpage parkway from the Southern State to Bethpage State Park and then you can connect to the SOB from there . I used to use all these roads as a kid when I journeyed forth to explore long island . Oh I almost forgot , Ocean Parkway is the best of them all . Allan

I agree! Ocean Parkway is the best by far. Thanks for mentioning it Allan.

When I was in high school my boyfriend and I called it the "Beauford Oyster Spa." I have no idea why.

I loved Long Island for all its straight forward roads the six years I spent there I never got lost. A 2 mile stretch of road here can be named 3 different things as you drive it - very confusing.
