amityville, NY

I am tired of this grey weather! you can see though, this town still looks quaint on the south shore that also happens to be the location of the amityville horror house. we used to drive by it when we were teenagers. what we expected to happen as we drove by makes me laugh when I think about this memory. it became the subject of a book, the amityville horror-a true story, which later influenced a series of films as well-none of which are memorable.

I remember when the movie came out. I didn't see it--dont' like scary movies. How much of the story was true?

I saw parts of it on TV. I used to love scary movies when I was a teenager-that's probably what prompted our drive-by's! In general I don't like them anymore either with the exception of some good science fiction.
I don't think they ever found out if any of it was true probably because it is hard to prove phenomena like poltergeists & ghosts.

Scientifically speaking, I suppose it couldn't be true. I wonder what really happened there.

In my hometown we had a couple of old houses we thought were haunted. Or maybe we just wished they were! (Something for teenagers to do without getting into real trouble.)

I grew up in Amityville from 6th grade till college . I lived on a canal and it was a great life on the water especially for a kid . As far as the Amityville horror is concerned I know the house well . It's not haunted in the least . That was just the defense Ron De Feo ( the son who murdered them all ) used to try and beat the rap. It failed . Ron was a year behind me at Amityville Memorial HS in the 60s. I knew him but not well . He was a weird loner with no friends . Now of course he's in the clink and will die there . The guy who bought and lived in the house and wrote the book was very smart . Made himself a bundle of money off the story . People still go to Amityville looking for the house much to the annoyance of some of the neighbors near the house . Anyway . Thats my Amityville story . Its a nice bayfront town and I guess it was put on the map by a horrific murder . Allan K.

Thank you Lily and thank you also for your great site . I had seen it written up in newsday and of course being a lifetime Long Islander I looked it right up . Hopefully I wont sound too brash when I tell you I may know Long Island better then anyone else I have ever met . From Orient right along the north shore to the miracle mile area in Manhasset and from western Nassau to Montauk Point I have probably seen it all and many times to boot . I've traveled all over the United States and Europe and I have to say I never tire of coming back here . There is so much here many people aren't aware of . Some people never get beyond the bad stuff . The traffic and congestion and all that and look at whats really here . Thanks again Lily for your site and I plan to look at it daily , Allan
