bike trail in massapequa

remember the guard bird I showed you the other day? well, this building sits at the waters edge across the pond from where the bird was standing. two seconds after I snapped this, a woman rode by on her bike. at the end of this path you see pictured here, is a major road called sunrise highway, where I have actually seen the sun rise.

Farmingdale State College

The Urban Horticulture and Design teaching garden at Farmingdale State College is what I consider a Farmingdale treasure. The four acre garden is made up of different themed "rooms". this one is my favorite. I can't wait until things really start to burst so you can see even more of what they have to show.

do you see the bird?

please click on photo to see birdy and his shadow up close

he was so still and so close and I almost rode my bike right past him. the massapequa preserve was quite busy yesterday. I'm guessing this guy had a job to do standing guard. deeper in the woods I could see what looked like his mate keeping her nest warm about twenty five feet from where he stood. and I am probably imagining this but as I snapped a dozen or so pictures while marveling at how he didn't mind me being so close, it really seemed like he was posing for me!

beverage barn on willis avenue

please click on photo to see greater detail

while out skywatching the other day I came across this store. there was something about it that I found appealing. maybe it's because I don't see many places like this around much anymore.

last skywatch for april

I love finding a big beautiful sky when I am right in the middle of rush hour traffic. it is like finding a bit of peace in the midst of all the hustle and bustle. last evening the sun was setting while I waited at a light on jericho turnpike and glen cove road. if you'd like to see more beautiful skies, please go here, thanks to klaus and his team, sandy, ivar, wren, fishing guy and louise.

baby whale on long beach

I apologize for this sad picture. I debated as to whether or not I should post it, but my son convinced me otherwise, his argument being that this was a part of long island that was really important. I for one never knew baby whales ever beached themselves anywhere on this island. police were there and wouldn't let us get close. this photograph was taken late yesterday morning. I found an organization called coastal research and education society of long island, inc. and reported the sighting. you can go here to check out their site.
this just in, a response from the president of coastal research & education society of long island, arthur h. kopelman,

Thanks for the sighting report. In the future, if you encounter what appears to be an injured whale, dolphin, sea turtle, or seal, please also report it to the NYS Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Program of the Riverhead Foundation ( via their hot-line at 631-369-9829. That is the "agency" to which you refer; they are the only group permitted by federal and state authority to deal with strandings in NY.

The animal you photographed wasn't a baby whale; it appears to be some kid of dolphin (a member of the group known as the odontocetes (toothed whales)). I am awaiting some further information from my colleagues about the animal.

neon green spring

please click on photo to see hosta leaves close-up

I woke up to a foggy morning. it also rained on and off, but it made for beautiful picture taking in the garden. the above picture shows exactly what everything green looked like under the blanket of fog that surrounded us for most of the day. this picture has not been tampered with in any way. if you'd like to see more representations of the letter N, please go here to abc wednesday, thanks to mrs. nesbitt. and happy earth day everyone!

daffodils on melville road

please click on photo for more daffodil details

aren't they pretty? there are at least four islands filled with bunches and bunches of these flowers. white ones with yellow centers, yellow ones with orange centers, some are completely yellow. it's such a treat to happen upon them. it's even nice driving away from them seeing the burst of yellows in the rear view mirror.

33 variations

photo courtesy anthony faria, please click on photo to see jane up close

awhile back I was reading new york portraits where the author kitty, wrote about the many plays on Broadway featuring famous actors. her post reminded me that I was long overdue for a play. wednesday my husband & I had cause for celebration & so we thought, why not go see a play? I always get my tickets through and wednesday I got tickets to "33 variations" with jane fonda at the last possible moment for a mere $59! We sat in the fourth row in an aisle seat. the show was a superb theatrical experience. I had no idea tom hanks had a son, colin, who was an actor who also happened to be in the show. the other actors were amazing as well, especially samantha mathis, zach grenier, don amendolia, erik steele and susan kellerman. diane walsh played the piano throughout the show. her music was exquisite. I did get in trouble at one point during the intermission for taking pictures. it really hurt having to delete two of them as one of the ushers stood over me demanding that I do so. after the show we waited at the stage door for the actors. jane was gracious greeting everyone as she exited the building. if you are interested, you can see ms. fonda's blog here. tomorrow I will be back with a picture from long island.

times square sky in new york city

please click on the photo to get a better view of the ball

can you see the famous new years eve ball resting at the bottom of the flagpole? it's the glowing ball atop the toshiba sign. I was in times square last night thinking I should take a picture of this sky filled with brightly lit up buildings when I looked up and noticed the ball. for some reason I thought it was taken down every year. I did a quick search and found that the organizers of our last new years eve celebration decided to keep the ball in full view year round. another interesting tidbit I found is that 1,728 crystals on the ball feature an angel with arms uplifted to welcome the new year. the waterford artisans from Ireland who created the ball call the design, "let there be joy". to see more interesting skies from all around the world, please go here, thanks to klaus & his skywatch team, sandy, ivar, wren, fishing guy and louise.

macy's flower show

please click on photo to see more details

every spring macy's herald square in new york city decorates their main floor by turning it into a flower show. this year I just happen to be in town in time to see it. macy's is on 34th street and within walking distance from penn station making it an extremely convenient trip for long islanders who enjoy this sort of thing. luckily the show runs through sunday. please go
here for more info.
also, this post is part of mrs. nesbitt's abc wednesday meme. can you guess what I chose to represent the letter M? please go here if you'd like to see more imaginative M ideas.

more macy's flower show...

please click on photo to see window display up close

with the drizzly cold days we have been having, this display window was a welcome site on 34th street. clearly everyone is sick of our "non" spring like weather. just in passing I hear people grumbling about it, complaining , "when will it ever end! I thought we were supposed to be in spring!" I have to believe it will be sooner rather than later. does anyone know what the farmer's almanac predicted?

first flowers

pansies are the first flowers one can bring home from your local nursery to plant in the ground or in pots here on long island in the earliest days of spring. they are considered cool weather favorites that last up until early summer. since their petals are edible, you can also use them to decorate salads & cupcakes. I brought home this flat last week and felt lucky to get them planted before last weekend.

polish donut

please click on this photo to see more sugary details

this polish donut is called paczki, pronounced pontski. basically a jelly donut yet unlike any other jelly donut I have ever eaten. perfectly fresh but not ridiculously sugar laden. I split this one with my son immediately upon exiting the dudek bakery in copaigue. sorry, I didn't get a photo of the babka from yesterday, I hope this makes up for it.

easter sunday

this was my kitchen table last easter sunday. my family follows a traditional polish easter. notice the kielbasa, pierogies and potato salad. the babka was on the counter. I'll have to see if I can get a photo of that today. happy easter to those who are celebrating today & to those who are not, happy sunday!

easter goodies at dudek bakery

one of my favorite things about easter is going to the polish bakery known as dudek's over in copaigue. here you see a traditional easter cake. their
pastries and breads are fresh and delicious. they are also a nice change from the usual standards you find in a typical american bakery. if you love a sort of cake like bread, try their babka, it is superb.

red tailed hawk in tree in sky

please click on this photo so you can see the two birds that were stalking mr. hawk

I owe a big thanks to my brother and twin nieces for this weeks skywatch post. sitting in their den they witnessed this hawk land in a tree in their front yard, "... then in a glorious flap of its wings the hawk soared to the backyard." my niece described quite a show where a nearby squirrel froze in fear while other smaller birds attacked the hawk from behind. after about three minutes, the hawk flew away, but not before swooping down giving a man driving by in a car cause for concern. if you'd like to see other more beautiful skywatch scenes from around the world, please go here, thanks to klaus & his team, sandy, ivar, wren, fishing guy & louise.

buds in the sky

just as it was getting late in the day, the sun made a brief appearance and lit up the signage on this building. while noticing the bright yellow color, I was reminded of the perfect daffodil photo I have yet to find. you may find the power lines distracting, but if you click on this photo you will see that this tree is covered in buds. isn't spring grand?
update, I just found the perfect daffodil! please go here.

I didn't get any daffodils for today

but I did manage to find these beautiful grape hyacinths. the sun was glorious if only for a few hours yesterday morning. passing by a wooded area I noticed a shock of deep blue shimmering brightly. lovely, don't you think? if you enlarge the photo you can see some forsythia in the background as well.

rainy day with bright yellow forsythia

please click on photo to see flowers up close

this is exactly what I saw many times today. the trees were all soaked to the bone making their bark look darker than usual, the sky was filled with clouds and rain but then there were splashes of yellow color around every corner. finally, the sun made an appearance at the end of the day and I noticed more buds on the trees and the grass looked greener too. so yes, rain is a good thing. tomorrow I shall look for daffodils.
that is what is happening in my world as of late. if you'd like to see what's going on elsewhere, please click here. otherwise, what is happening with you?

easter plants

please click on photo to see sign details up close

this sunday is easter so it is not uncommon to find easter plants at places like the grocery store and garden nurseries. it is also not unusual for makeshift road side stands to sell plants as well, much like what you find around christmas time if you are looking for a christmas tree.
I don't ever remember seeing a sign for easter plants as carefully handmade as this one.there is something I find quite appealing about its design. it looks really simple and old fashioned.
so, did you enjoy the weather this weekend?

long island city isn't a part of long island I get to frequent all that much but last night I was invited to a friends opening reception at the apw gallery. it was pretty neat. the theme was works on paper sized at eight by ten inches. despite the limitations there was a nice variety of artwork on display.

and now...the winner of my first giveaway in celebration of one year of long island daily photo goes to... Naturegirl! congratulations Naturegirl! your name was picked the old fashioned way, out of a hat by my son. and I do hope you enjoy the book.

sun ming in sky

please click on photo to get a better look at the sun ming signage

it's unfortunate that sun ming restaurant is no longer open. I did a google search and found it had an excellent reputation. it's depressing seeing establishments close down one after the other.
though it is still a pretty neat looking building. and somehow the sun makes everything seem a little brighter. if you'd like to see other skies from all around the world, please go here.

also, today is the last day to enter for a chance to win my giveaway, the book, Long Island Daily Photo, in celebration of my one year blogoversary, thanks to the generous sponsorship of blurb. if you like this site, I think you may enjoy the book. please click on the sidebar book icon to enter your name in the comments section. & thanks again for all of your well wishes.

dreary rainy day

please click on photo to see more details of the plane

driving down jericho turnpike I quickly snapped this photo just as the light turned green. I wanted to catch the rain on the windshield of my car as I looked out over this street scene. I didn't notice the plane at the time. the funny thing is I have been trying to capture a decent shot of a plane over long island since I started this blog. fate would have it that I would get one unknowingly. hopefully today's weather will be nothing like yesterdays.

was it the chicken or the egg?

I don't know what it is about these blow up decorations, but ever since I started photographing long island, I've developed a whole new appreciation for them. I wonder if this type of lawn display is popular anywhere else. I think it would be neat to see how these are used in other parts of the world. isn't this little guy great?
happy first day of april everyone & try not to fool too many people!
