I don't know why but I just can't shop on black friday. in other news, is this bunny cute or what? I found him last year while shopping at the miracle mile aka americana manhasset.

our annual tradition, handed down by my mom, is that we faithfully watch the macy's thanksgiving day parade on the tele every thanksgiving morning. usually this means we just leave the tv on and watch bits and pieces of it as we enter & exit the living room. this year ian won't be home until the last bit of it which is crucial since if there is one thing we never miss, it is santa waving hello to us at parade's end as he officially ushers in the christmas season.

I can't help sharing more tape art from RISD. and yes, I am guilty of believing my son has great talent and pretty much everything he does is genius. seriously though, would you take a look at this? Ian created this with his own two hands!!! I thought it was perfect for the first day of hanukkah. below is more art for your perusal from the dormitory halls of RISD - all of which is done freehand by his fellow art students.

ian hasn't been home in over three months. he's the one napping pre-dinner on the right. I haven't seen my niece (pictured here on the left) since last christmas. to say I am excited to see them both is a very big understatement. every year my brother and sister in law welcome us into their home to share thanksgiving. this year will be different since their oldest son is serving in the army in south korea - it won't be the same without him. my other niece, tracy, asked my mom if she could make the apple pie this year. how sweet is that? what are your plans for this thursday?

I'm not sure I've ever seen this type of sign before. this makes me glad to see an awareness of wildlife and some concern for its safety here on busy long island. in other news, it is a mere 27 degrees outside as I type this post. I can see the pachysandra has frozen over appearing deader than dead - among other things, throughout our backyard . it amazes me how they always spring back to life in between such frosts.

I've noticed lots of holiday lights in my neighborhood lately. some people like to put up decorations when the weather is still warm enough to do so without getting frostbite on their fingers. I think my neighbors might be early this year since Hanukkah happens to be the day before thanksgiving with Christmas being only 3 weeks later. whatever the case, I rather like mr. polar bear but this bear is even better!

there's been some facebook buzz about stores being open thanksgiving creating a sort of pre-black friday sale. my brother suggested that maybe it's time to move thanksgiving to wednesday.

I think we've finally crossed over into the much colder part of Autumn here in NY (& on Long Island). Maybe my longing for a warmer day is what drew me to this picture from last summer's archives. If you'd like to see more Manhattan water towers, please visit Daryl over at out and about in new york city where you will see she posts a picture of a water tower every Wednesday.

unfortunately it didn't stick so I don't have any pretty pictures of it to post here. I did post a six second video on my instagram page in case you'd like to check it out. I found these flowers while riding my bike through my neighborhood last week. I wonder if they will survive tonights freeze!

when I posted a picture of this tree last week, some of these leaves still had some green left in them. after yesterday's rain there isn't a single leaf left. I shot this photograph last saturday when I was outside raking leaves. I found today's weather astounding by the way. how was it over by you?

actually, I think this is probably just very pretty scaffolding. the temperatures were a little frigid yesterday, but perfect for the very long walk I trekked through the lower part of manhattan. I haven't been to SOHO since this last summer and happening upon this during my walk was a nice surprise.

I am soaking up what I imagine to be our last bit of yellows and reds and limey greens before winter takes hold here on this island of ours. I hope you are enjoying your extra hour everyone.

I posted a portrait a risd student created (using mere tape and scissors) last June here on this blog. Naturally, I could not wait to see what I would find on their dormitory walls this year. I was not disappointed. Extraordinary stuff.
P.S. Don't forget to set your clocks back before you go to sleep tonight.

I love how there is the tiniest bit of yellow ochre found in the trees peeking up from the lower part of the sky against the lighter shades of blue. the sky was so bright last week compared to today's (much needed) grey rainy skies. to see other beautiful skies, please visit skywatch friday.
