I was happy to see the anna sui store on greene street still exists. I've always enjoyed window shopping there. with yesterday's rain, I didn't think it was the best day to walk around soho snapping pictures but I had an eye exam I needed to keep and I'm glad I did. look what else I found. this bike lane reminds me of one of those narrow pools where you go and swim laps. I wish I got to stay a bit longer yesterday, I love NYC - even in the rain.

I love this dwarf cherry tree in our backyard for the blossoms it gives us (without fail) that always surprise me every spring. not to mention, many flowers equal many cherries which means more cherry pie.

I planted at least a hundred of these last autumn. pictured here are just two of the four that weren't dug up by our resident squirrel. the funny thing is, he must have hidden (buried) these two over by the garage since I didn't plant a single thing there. those jokester squirrels always got something up their sleeves.
here is a beautiful muscari "patch" from spring 2009 - just in case you missed them the first time. please click on the photo if you want a close up.

I was driving down main street through the town of bayshore yesterday when I noticed this wonderful signage. check out the planet mars next to the mars auto parts sign. please notice the word discount is mounted in neon across the center of the planet.

The sky was very blue yesterday, prompting me to go for a very long bike ride to the Massapequa Nature Preserve. It turned out the weather was chillier than it appeared. I've noticed the wind has a tendency to feel colder to me while riding my bike then if I were just walking and moving my arms. Reluctantly, I persevered and by the end of my ride I was indeed quite warm. What did you do last Sunday?

the daffodils weren't looking up today. with their faces looking down they seemed to be asleep, barely moving while shielding their faces from the rain. and here I am thinking we are having a late spring only to find a 2011 long island daily photo post stating these exact same daffodils didn't bloom until april 21!

after the warm temperatures and the sun and then last night's soaking rain, the buds are starting to do some serious popping. inspired by yesterday's post I took lots of pictures this early evening except they came out awful. the light was horrible, not one bit of magic hour illumination even for a second. so here is something from last spring. I remember riding my bike through the neighborhood one late afternoon after it had just rained. the clouds were moving away from us and the sun was calling attention to all the greens.

Henri Edmond Cross, Landscape with Pine Trees, 1896
I must have stared at 555 photographs trying to pick one out to post just now. I know, such a problem! isn't it lovely? I snapped this one at the met awhile back. feeling uninspired from my own work I was forced to turn to one of the greats. I hope you like it as much as I do.

still no leaves on this one yet! and it seems kind of odd when you consider the near 80 degree weather we've been having as of late. personally I am hoping we'll go back to more spring like temperatures.

I am extremely happy the daffodil bulbs I planted last fall actually grew! two days ago I was looking out the window at one of the squirrels in our yard happily munching away on one of fifty or so lovely white crocuses I had planted by our tree last year. he must have picked the flower as he had it cupped in his hand quite human like and stared me down as he speedily ate every last bit of each petal precisely one at a time. so gentlemanly was he I couldn't help staring right back at him enjoying his meal.

I've always loved this little pale yellow house though I'm not sure I ever noticed the winding road that runs along side it. it appears as if the road leads all the way through this neighborhood block out onto the street behind it. I think upon first look many people would easily mistake it for a driveway.

today was a gorgeous day! I could hardly believe my phone said it was 61 degrees out. I took another photo of this big white cloud last friday, a day that was mostly a grey one - before ending with this majestic sky. I have taken many photographs using the wires in the sky around LI as part of their composition so I am quite aware of their presence - and I am fairly certain I would not miss seeing so many of them.

To say I was more than a little concerned when I witnessed this incident in our backyard is an understatement. Thankfully the internet provided me with the amazing site birdforum where its members quickly id'd this hawk as Coopers Hawk and also informed me that they do not go after little dogs!
Thanks to Ian for this amazing photograph too.

How stunning is this old brick Farmingdale house with its white trim? A very rare thing - a beautiful home with a huge garden that looks like it hasn't been changed in at least fifty years.

I know it's Spring when little red buds start to fall off this grand Silver Leaf Swamp Maple that resides in my Farmingdale neck of the woods.

every year my mom makes this delicious cake for easter. you may remember seeing it here before. one time she used flowers for the decoration. this time she used chocolate eggs. you can see the cake below as it looks illuminated by candlelight.
