under the sycamore tree revisited

Under-the-Sycamore-Tree-in-Farmingdale

remember this beauty when she wasn't wearing her full regalia? someone has been taking care of her too since I can see from the previous picture she has been pruned.

connecticut's cranes

Connecticut's-Cranes-and-Interstate-95

last week we picked ian up from college. it was the dullest and greyest of mornings until we passed these beauties along the way - somewhere in connecticut on interstate 95. it's a bit blurry but I like the colors.

"The earth laughs in flowers." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

The-Earth-Laughs-in-Flowers

I am fairly certain I have used this quote before but I can't help but use it again since it is so apropos. every time I go for a walk in my neighborhood a new bunch of flowers seem to magically appear. I think these might be some type of hydrangea. does anyone happen to know?

pollen at the preserve

Massapequa-Nature-Preserve's-Yellow-Irises

did anyone happen to notice all the pollen flying around on thursday?  I realize this is old news what with the rain and cold temperatures, but I had to share this. see the sandy colored stuff floating around the pond here in this picture? I am pretty sure it's pollen. there was a bunch of it on my car's windshield in the morning too. anyway, ian and I were riding bikes at the preserve (yes! Ian is home from college! yay!) and just as we stopped at one of the bridges to check out the flowers below I believe some of the flying pollen - it was so windy it was as if it was raining pollen - got stuck in my throat making me cough so uncontrollably I felt like I was choking. luckily this experience lasted all of 5 seconds. I don't ever remember being so inundated with pollen, ever. it was like a pollen storm. by the time we got home I felt like I had tiny grains of sand lodged underneath my eyelids. yes, these are my problems and yes I do consider myself lucky.
at least now the rain seems to be washing most of it away.
so, what are your plans for this memorial day weekend?

Mr Cardinal Enjoys a Bit of Lunch

A-Cardinal-Eats-His-Lunch

I don't know why but I would love to know what he is munching on here, or, getting ready to bring back to his babies. Every spring without fail, a new family of Cardinals arrive in our backyard. This year they seem to be particularly rambunctious. I heard so much high pitched baby talk and fluttering of wings over by the forsythia I had to go check it out. After noticing Mr. Cardinal here, I walked closer to try and get a better look. He of course immediately flew up to a higher perch but a baby Cardinal still downy soft, stayed behind flying from one small branch to the next. It was the cutest thing.

are we in Vegas yet?

Are-We-in-Vegas-Yet?

when I see reptiles I always think of the desert, places like las Vegas with its hot sunny arid heat - not so much like the yucky humid heat we have been experiencing on long island these last few days. not that I would mind other desert places, but in Vegas, you do get to experience a variety of things and I'm not inferring hangover part three type things either! I'm thinking of other things to do in Vegas like seeing a show or visiting the hoover dam. over the years I've seen a lot of shows in new york but the idea of seeing one in vegas then lounging by the pool afterwards sounds pretty sweet to me.
but I digress, these lizards aren't actually from the desert. believe it or not they are from garden city long island. my brother pointed them out to me while walking through his garden on mother's day. here they are posing for the camera underneath the a.c. unit.
legend has it they emigrated from northern italy back in the late 60's where they broke free enroute to a pet store
I wish they lived in my garden.

Priscilla's Lily of The Valley

Backyard-Lily-of-the-Valley

I say Priscilla's, because out of all the nooks and crannies Priscilla loves to explore in our garden, lately she can't seem to get enough of the patch where the lilies are blooming. I shot the scene from her perspective trying to get a glimpse of what exactly it is she is looking at.

big sky over farmingdale

Big-Cloud-Over-Farmingdale,NY

ever since I updated my iphone I've had some trouble figuring things out as far as using the camera goes. though some would argue about this picture's quality, I was really pleased when I got it to focus on the big cloud.

I haven't done a friday skywatch post in ages, so here it is. if you'd like to see more fabulous skies, please visit skywatch friday.

cherry blossom litter

Cherry-Blossom-Litter-with-Clover-Spring-2013

first there was the dampened cherry blossom's litter piled on the sidewalk - just before the downpour. then the cat slinked by. and as I was leaving I noticed even the street curb was enhanced by the litter. I can't get enough of this flower petal litter stuff.

the first tick of the season

First-Dog-Tick-of-Spring-2013

here it is trapped in an old honey jar. the first one, and hopefully the last one. I pulled it off of priscilla with a tweezer yesterday. the entire incident made me feel very itchy afterwards.

Because he Knows I like Hotdogs...

Mother's-Day-Postcard

This is the Mother's Day postcard I received from Ian. Today was our first Mother's Day we've spent apart in 19 years! It warms my heart that he remembered.
Happy Mother's Day to all of you mom's out there!

The Dandelion Before and After

Dandelions-at-Farmingdale-State-College

The dandelions are looking a little beaten up this year. I remember them looking much more puffier than the one pictured above. Below you can see them in their 'parachute ball' phase.

flower petal litter?

Spring-Carpet

is there another name for this spring event where the sidewalks become carpeted with the ever so delicate flower petals as they fall form their respective trees? do tell if you happen to know.

the other side of things...

Providence-Rhode-Island-Skyline

here you can see a partial view of the first baptist church as seen from downtown providence. this was taken early evening last saturday during that magic hour when the light from the setting sun rapidly changes all the colors right before your eyes. providence is a bit chillier than long island. the flowers are just starting to come out and everything has that spring like atmosphere that we've been experiencing for at least a couple of weeks now.

it's all in the details

First-Baptist-Church-in-America

this is a close up of the first baptist church in america in providence, rhode island. this weekend I jumped on the opportunity to visit ian up in providence. the weather was amazing and springtime was happening all over the place. yay for spring!

still life with grapevine

Backyard-Grapevine

this is the grapevine in my backyard. no one has any idea how old it is. every summer this vine yields an abundance of grapes. I really should learn to do something with them.

Early Evening Magic Hour

Magic-Hour-in-Farmingdale

I love how the light of this evening's magic hour is lighting up this Old Dutch Colonial. Have you ever noticed how intense sunlight can be when contrasted against disappearing storm clouds?

doesn't everyone love a picket fence?

and I also love the pair of pink tulips just at the entrance of this property too.
