this is how much it was snowing when I left vermont yesterday. I must admit I did panic a bit when I looked out the window at seven am. as much as I enjoyed my mini vacation it was time to go home and the thought of being snowed in would have sucked any and all of whatever rest and relaxation I had gleaned over the weekend. check out the road below, and don't worry, I wasn't driving.

please excuse my late post. this is the first time I am attempting to post from my iPhone while away on a mini vacation. why I decided to go to vermont where there is more snow than we have on long island is beyond me. it is really quiet here though and the food is delicious.

a fire in farmingdale

I just dropped my son at the library when I noticed billowing clouds of smoke rising up over farmingdale in the distant sky yesterday. the fire must have just broke out since there wasn't a fire truck in sight. as I drove past the burning building I heard a man shouting in disbelief how quickly the fire took over the structure. go here if you'd like to see more of my pictures of the fire posted on the farmingdale patch website.

which I probably should just rename, 'I finally got an iPhone'. reflections on main street

I must have watched more television in this last week than I have in the last year so when I got outside today and saw how blue the sky was it seemed like everything looked new again, even this furniture store on main street. not too long ago I photographed the back of this store which you can see here if you like, though, please be sure to scroll down to the second picture.

an early skywatch...

it seems like I just photographed the full moon. technically, it's not really full until friday but yesterday around five pm I was finally well enough to venture outside my house and this sky was the first thing I saw. hopefully today I will get some photos from somewhere other than my own backyard.

a late post for today and dreams of summertime

sorry for such a late post, I've been sick in bed with a fever and cold since late yesterday afternoon. my most recent photographs are way to wintry for how I'm feeling today so I went back to my archives from 2008 and found this variation of a photograph I had taken from august of that year. this is robert moses, probably my favorite beach on long island. I didn't try a slice so I will never know if the pizza here is any good. this was taken somewhere in manhattan last autumn. haven't been here in awhile so I thought I'd take a ride around the pond, which as you can see, is completely covered. despite all the 'ugly' snow we have everywhere, there are some places that still look pretty.

this was taken at the farmingdale train station the morning after our last big snow. I'm glad I caught some pretty shadows here, we've had nothing but grey skies and rain the last couple of days. not that I'm complaining - I've never been happier to see some rain!

climate change and the movie, 'home'...

from february 4th through the 10th, the village east cinema in manhattan is hosting free admission to see this important film entitled 'home' by yann arthus-bertrand. mr. bertrand will also be at the cinema to meet anyone who would like to discuss his film. watch the short trailer here. the movie is also free on youtube as well.

snowbound

alexa from the amazing blog, 'the road is mine'  left a comment on yesterday's 'long island daily photo' post about driving the morning after last weeks storm. it may be hard to believe but if you were able to dig yourself out, you could drive your car around town. by 8am the side roads weren't the least bit icy and the main roads were sanded and slushy. of course I drove around town about 5 miles an hour! I probably would have been nervous if it was still snowing or freezing rain - like what is expected between now and wednesday. I think icy slick roads are the worst & I hope that with today's weather, everyone gets to where they are going safely.
