water tower and shadows

taken in the late afternoon a couple of weeks ago, this sunlight reminded me of spring.
I know, that's all I keep wishing for lately!

pool closed and puddle reflections...

and perhaps one of the biggest puddles I've ever seen! this photo was taken on thursday, before our big blizzard yesterday, we had lots and lots of rain. in fact, it was raining as I was taking this photo. and even though it was raining, people were happy. the snow was finally being washed away. little did we know...

Priscilla makes a break for it...

I didn't want to post anymore snow photos but I thought this was just too cute. Unbelievably, our Yorkie Priscilla isn't sick of the snow yet.

a hopeful sky

I couldn't bare to photograph yesterday's dreary sky, so I pulled this one from the archives, a photo I took sometime last weekend before this weeks crummy weather set in. it may be snowing again but at least it's friday!

today is skywatch friday, if you'd like to see more skies from all around the world or if you'd like to add your own sky, please go here, thanks to klaus and his team, sandy, wren, fishing guy, and sylvia.

f is for friends

these two weren't too friendly to me but they seemed to like each other a lot. as soon as I started to walk towards them they started to walk away. it was kind of cute how they waddled when they walked. I was almost tempted to try and get them to fly, but fear got the best of me when I noticed I was outnumbered. plus, these guys are quite large.

today is abc wednesday thanks to our host mrs. nesbitt. the letter for the day is F. please go here to join in the fun.

farmingdale graffiti

I am wondering how long our town of farmingdale will let this go before they decide to clean this up. it's possible the powers that be aren't aware of this. I'm thinking maybe we need a graffiti hall of  fame like kitty of new york portraits wrote about.

sunlight and dirty snow

the snowmen have all toppled over, the streets and sidewalks are completely clear and the snow is getting blacker by the day. now it's time for it to melt! I shouldn't complain since we have had a lot of sun lately. & I'm sure I won't like it when it starts raining this week either. then again that means the snow will be gone. have a great monday everyone - regardless of what type of weather you are having.

fire hydrant and shadows

we have a rule in our neighborhood where, whenever it snows whoever has a fire hydrant in front of their house has to shovel a pathway to it in case the firemen have to come and hook a hose up to it in order to put out a fire. I thought this yellow one looked pretty cheery.

stella dallas reflections and a small homage to 365 days in brooklyn

stella dallas thrift shop on thompson street in greenwich village, ny has been around since I used to live there 18 years ago. while hanging out right next door in front of generation records the other day, I could barely contain my excitement upon noticing the wonderful reflections in their shop window. today's meme is "weekend reflections" hosted by james of newtown area photo. please go here to see more or join in the fun. thanks james.
the homage part of this post goes to miss b's two blogs, 365 days in brooklyn & once I saw a dragonfly. I first came across miss b's 365 days in islip, then she moved to brooklyn, the whole while selling vintage clothing on ebay. I love following her and her adventures. wherever she goes she seems to bring with her the best sense of humor and style - a rare combination of great talent, in my humble opinion. anyway, seeing this store reminded me of her.

twilight sky with lights

doesn't those giant mounds of snow make it look like we live in alaska? well, maybe not quite.
I thought these trees looked pretty, lit up against the twilight sky.

e is for excellent snowman

no coal for eyes? no problem, just insert those little umbrellas one uses to garnish your fancy mai tai cocktail. and if you don't have two of the same color, that's fine too, one blue & one orange will do. who says a snowmans eyes have to be the same color anyway? there seem to be some very creative people in my farmingdale neighborhood. please click on photo if you'd like to see umbrellas up close.

slushy morning commute

after our blizzard last week, we were lucky to be graced with just 3 inches of wet snow that seemed to suddenly evaporate as it hit the streets and sidewalks earlier. no snow plows needed for this one. how was your commute this morning?

favorite presidents and a special feature

americans all over the u.s. celebrate presidents day today, mainly by having the day off from work. I saved these two photos from last year in anticipation of this holiday. george's photo was taken on my trip to milwaukee last june when I visited their war memorial center and abe lincoln's photo was taken at the national portrait gallery in washington dc last october. I was especially impressed by the fact that this is a photograph of abe, so we get to see a more accurate depiction of what mr. lincoln actually looked like. who are your favorite presidents?

on another note, VP from livorno daily photo has another wonderful blog named "a bunch of benches" and was kind enough to feature one of my photos from long island daily photo on his blog today! please visit here if you'd like to see it, it really is a neat blog. Thank you VP, you made my day!

huntington bay sky

I haven't been down this way in ages. last sunday it was so sunny, a perfect day for a scenic drive by the north shore. beautiful isn't it? I bet it looks amazing with all the snow we just had too.

update...

thankfully school was closed so I didn't have to defy authority and make my kid stay home. I woke up at ten to six and I could see the northern parkway webcam on news 12 showing one accident being cleared and heard another report about a jack-knifed semi on the long island expressway. we are now shoveling everything we shoveled yesterday, and more!

winter bird bath

I hope the schools are closed today. it's funny, we found out tuesday evening around 6pm that my son's school would be closed and it hadn't started snowing yet. so far tonight ( I'm actually writing this wednesday around 11pm) there hasn't been an announcement yet and it has been snowing since midnight wednesday! remember this bird bath from here, here and here?

still snowing midnight thursday!

parting is such sweet sorrow

has anyone ever seen the hugh grant movie "love actually"? remember the scene at the airport when he talks about how love is all around you there when you stop and take notice? so many people saying goodbye and so many people saying hello and lots of laughter and lots of tears.
I noticed this was true as I dropped off  a loved one yesterday morning.
it's not easy saying goodbye to someone you love, especially when they are traveling far away. but if you're lucky, you get to welcome them back.

shadows and winter

remember this quiet bench? longer days and midwinter shed a whole different light on this scene. check out what this looked like in autumn over here. please click on photo if you'd like, it looks so much better enlarged.

reflections on cugini pizza

I always associate italian restaurants with an old billy joel song about brenda and eddie. does anyone know it? I listened to that album I can no longer remember the name of, over my christmas break while pining away for a boy named anthony. sweet memories. and this restaurant was pretty good too. tasty, cozy (especially with anthony) and not too expensive.

february sky over parking lot

some of the best skies on long island seem to be over parking lots. this one is over the strip mall on rte 109 in farmingdale.

valentine lights & happy groundhog day!

this is the first time I have ever seen anyone decorate their house with lights like this for valentine's day. festive, don't you think? I wish more people decorated for this holiday. I have a lot of nerve writing this because I have not put up one measly heart myself. I can be so lazy in the winter.

I think this truck is lost...

Semi-in-the-Suburbs-on-a-Sunday-Night

sunday evenings are traditionally extremely quiet around these parts, until you hear a semi roaring down your block. technically it is illegal for trucks over a certain weight to drive through our neighborhood, that's why I believe this driver might be lost. happy first day of february everyone.
