thank you servicemen and women

today is memorial day observed in the united states. it's not unusual to see united states veterans collecting donations outside of grocery stores for their fellow servicemen in need. anyone who makes a donation is given a paper poppy. a small slip of paper attached to the poppies read; 'proceeds to the veterans of foreign wars for veterans assistance programs'. a note of thanks to this veteran for allowing me to take his picture to share on my blog, I'm sorry I didn't get your name & thank you for your service.

reflections, hovercrafts, and anthropologie

the bright green painted leaves drew me towards this window display. as I got closer, I thought there was a hovercraft floating inside the store. then I realized it was the reflection of the skylight from inside the mall. silly me.

welcome to my sky...

if only these were the gates to my estate. but alas, this happens to be the entrance to the planting fields arboretum italian blue pool garden. wow, that's a mouthful!
I like how the gates decorate the sky. don't they compliment the soft clouds perfectly?

the magic shop

this is the inside of the only magic shop I could find in nassau county when my son was heavily into magic. recently I found my way back here after finding every party city on long island devoid of fangs. I should have called here first. not only do they sell magic tricks and apparatus for magicians, they sell all types of attire for those who like to dress up in costume. & the fangs I purchased for ian, they looked just like the real thing - which is important when you are dressing up as a vampire.

a steep spiral staircase

these were the stairs leading up to our bedroom at the pennsbury inn where I stayed overnight a couple of weeks ago. it's a nice bed and breakfast surrounded by an amazing garden created by the innkeeper. the house was built in the 1700's and it is suspected that the home was used as part of the underground railroad.
please visit my other long island daily photo blog here to see more of the pennsbury inn.

a view from borgia cafe

as I waited for my food, I could see vesuvio bakery was back in business! this was welcome news, maybe things are getting better. the last time I was in soho I noticed vesuvios had joined the long list of small businesses that had closed and needless to say I found it fairly depressing. I can be very sentimental at times  - I have fond memories of buying bread there on my way home from work when I used to live on thompson street years ago.
cafe borgia is one of my favorite places to grab lunch when I'm visiting soho. I love the grilled mozzarella and basil with tomato sandwich & their vanilla frappes are so light and flavorful. the atmosphere is also very laid back, I've never felt rushed to finish.

verrazano narrows bridge

Verrazano Narrows Bridge

driving home from pennsylvania last week, I was lucky the traffic was at a standstill so I could get this shot. I guess that's one way of looking at it because seriously, the traffic was the worst I have seen in a long time. if you'd like to know more about the verazzano narrows bridge please go hereplease pop on over to san francisco bay's daily photo to check out the "sunday bridge series". thanks for hosting louis la veche!

souvlaki place reflections

yesterday's sunset post reflected onto the souvlaki place. one of the better than fast food establishments in bayville where you can go get a quick bite to eat before taking in the view of the long island sound.

sunset sky in bayville

I haven't been to bayville's beach in years so this sunset was a pleasant surprise. located on the north shore of long island overlooking the long island sound, bayville is a nice place to go and grab a bite to eat or stroll along the shore.

two weeks

having grown up on long island it's hard to imagine not going to the beach in the summertime, camping in my backyard or picnicking outside in a beautiful state park.  I was reminded of the fact that not everyone gets to have these experiences when I visited one of my favorite blogs yesterday, where kitty of new york portraits wrote about the fresh air fund and posted the video you can see below. since 1877, the fresh air fund has been raising dollars to send low income inner-city kids to summer camp or place them in homes with host families for one or two weeks of summertime fun. investing in the children of the world is like investing in a hopeful future. please watch this compelling video and if you can, please make a donation to the fresh air fund. & if you donate before june 30th, a generous sponsor will match your donation!

R is for rural

I am not really sure what constitutes "rural" but whenever I see cows, the word rural comes to mind. this bunch weren't far from the field of flowers I posted the other day, though this time I got out of the car to take their picture. I felt a twinge of guilt since they all looked so relaxed lolling on the grass lounging amongst each other, yet every single one of them stood up and walked over to greet me. today is abc wednesday and the letter is R. please visit the abc wednesday meme page to find more R's & join in the fun.

kuerner farm reflections

there is nothing like an impromptu road trip to spice things up a bit. the trick was to find someplace close enough to visit by car in just 36 hours. so we found ourselves at kuerner farm, a source of the great american artist, andrew wyeth's inspiration for many of his most famous paintings. the visit was well worth the extra hours spent battling the nearly stand still traffic coming home on the belt parkway. more photos from the farm to follow. meanwhile, please check out james of newtown area photo's wonderful weekend reflection meme if you'd like to see more reflections or join in the fun.

Q is for quiet

borgo argenina is a beautiful bed and breakfast I stayed at with my family last summer in italy. it was the epitome of peace and quiet. the only sounds you heard were from nature. this view is from the table we sat at in the breakfast room. and yes this picture is nice, but trust me when I say I wish I captured the real beauty of this place.

forget me nots and shadows

another one of my favorite flowers though quite a challenge to photograph since, like the dandelions I shot the other day, it was hard to catch them still. it has been very breezy here again lately. mother nature has been busy blowing all the seedlings around planting things for summer. speaking of which, today is mother's day here in the united states. so happy mothers day to all of you moms out there! I hope you enjoy your day and I also hope you realize how important you are.

may sky over jericho turnpike

lately, the weather has been exquisite. other than some heavy downpours and just in time to water the grass too, we have been very lucky weather wise. maybe I shouldn't be writing about it too much. it's not that I'm superstitious or anything...

massapequa preserve

I love riding my bike down this path. it's the quickest way to get to the woods if you live in farmingdale. I've posted the massapequa preserve many times on this blog. it's an easy place to visit and I always find something new. my last post of the preserve was here where you may notice a definite absence of the color green. a lot changes in nature in just one month. thinking of the floods in nashville and the oil spill in the gulf, I feel exceptionally grateful our little piece of paradise is preserved, at least for today.

wild poppies

I have been photographing our ever expanding poppy patch in our backyard for the past few years and this is the first time I have noticed this stage in the poppy's cycle. am I weird, or is this amazing?
and, would you believe I actually posted poppies for the letter P exactly one year ago plus one day  for this very meme? you can see them here if you'd like.

blurry puffy dandelions

remember my dandelion from just a little over a week ago? it is nowhere to be found. all that was left of it was its giant weedy looking leaves. I imagine it looked like this for a short time before the wind took it away. that's why the ones here are so blurry, it was quite breezy out while I waited for a still moment. I must have sat on the curb where these were for twenty minutes before I decided to give up. for some reason I still like this picture though.
oh and, you'll never guess what these are called! parachute balls! have you ever heard of such a thing? I found out on wikipedia. and if it's on wikipedia, it must be true.

last cherry blossoms

Last-of-The-White-Cherry-Blossoms-With-Blue-Sky

this shot was actually  taken well over a week ago. I noticed yesterday almost all the flowers were gone from our cherry tree! the beauty of the blossoms were fleeting but the cool thing is, the cherries have started to form and we got lots of them! It has been a family tradition to make at least one cherry pie every spring but we always have so many unused cherries and they are way too tart to eat raw. I think I may actually try and do some preserving of the cherries this year. I guess a girl can dream, right?

bongos no more

for a brief moment in time this building looked like it was going to be another vacant storefront. it used to be bongos. driving by  just a few days ago I was happy to see it is now "tasca convivio" I was also happy to catch these interesting reflections just as the red light I was waiting at changed.
