Coopers Hawk Captures Prey in Farmingdale Backyard

To say I was more than a little concerned when I witnessed this incident in our backyard is an understatement. Thankfully the internet provided me with the amazing site birdforum where its members quickly id'd this hawk as Coopers Hawk and also informed me that they do not go after little dogs!

Wow!! Talk about being at the right place at the right time!! What a great capture!! We have a couple of Coopers that haunt the neighborhood daily. They don't seem to bother the pets at all. I found Carolina Wren feathers floating in the pool one morning, though:(

wow! Super cool. No The Cooper's probably will not go after the small dog.
But I can tell you that a red tailed hawk or an osprey will go after small dogs. My neighbor was actually warned by his vet to not let their tiny little maltese in the backyard unsupervised. SHe could easily be scooped up. Scary!

Pretty neat! We do have them in Arizona... but I never saw them in a backyard though!

Looks like it may have been a little bird that was its victim this time Lily..I had this very same scene in my garden , so distressing especially when the chick's parents are screaming above, horrible..

I'm very relieved to hear Priscilla won't be tempting for this hawk, Lily. {I feel so sorry for whatever fell prey to it ~ the animal kingdom seems harsh but I have to try to go with the flow of such things. I've had a few 'Incidents' in my yard with wildlife and I'm trying to toughen up. And nope, it's not really working yet!} Wishing you and Priscilla a happy weekend.

It's so difficult to accept 'natures way' when I saw a hawk tearing apart a gentle Dove. They are so vicious. Yes it seems like there are more hawks flying around lately. Coopers are supposed to stay near woodland or edges of woods. Maybe us bird lovers feeding the birds are doing the birds a diservice making it real easy for the hawks. I saw one sitting on my hedges waiting for the birds to come and get the seeds set out for them.
