nyssma is the new york state school music association. every spring this professional organization evaluates student musicians throughout new york during the annual nyssma festival. my son participated yesterday and was scheduled to perform at the garden city high school. parents are left outside the classroom while the students play or sing their piece in front of an adjudicator that evaluates their performance. it is always exciting to see all the young dedicated musicians waiting for their turn to play.

I don't remember the last time I saw a set up like this at the mall. I thought this little girl was extremely brave. she really didn't make a big fuss. If I were her size I think I would be much more frightened to sit with a giant bunny. do you remember getting your picture taken with the easter bunny or santa claus or any other giant puppet like characters when you were younger?

as you can see by yesterday's and today's post I spend a lot of time in my car. most people on long island use a car for transportation. with over seven million five hundred thousand people living here, that adds up to lots of traffic. this sign shows some examples of what early native long islanders wound up naming their roads and towns. I found this interesting page from september 29, 1900 describing old country road. I couldn't find much on plainview, though the name suggests its own explanation. and here is a brief history of hicksville. what is your favorite way to get around?
don't forget, tonight is earth hour. instead of shutting off our lights for an hour, maybe long islanders should all stay off the roads instead. though I doubt that is possible!

please click on photo to see the sky over main street up close
I took this photo last week while waiting at a red light on main street in farmingdale. I wanted to post it for today's skywatch because though it may be small, at least it's blue. yesterday was a dreary rainy grey day. hopefully we will see some sun this afternoon and after all the rain maybe things will start to look a little greener as well. please go here if you'd like to see more beautiful skies from all around the world.

I love the name of this hotel that was just around the corner from the barnes and noble I visited tuesday night. I couldn't help but wonder if this was where heather was staying. if you're confused, please see last post. have you ever stayed over night at a hotel in manhattan?

it isn't unusual for many long islanders to experience. last night I took the five fifteen train into the city along with many hockey fans wearing rangers' jerseys. we parted ways at penn station when I left on the # 1 train heading downtown. I arrived at barnes & noble half an hour early, listened to a great reading by none other than heather b. armstrong herself, from dooce.com fame, got my book signed and I was back on the train & home by 8:15. this is one of the things I love about living here, there are so many things to do and a lot of them are free.

please click on photo to get a better look at these two faces
it was quite chilly yesterday though you wouldn't notice the cold so much if you stayed inside your vehicle. as I waited for the light to change, I felt a pair of eyes staring at me. I looked up in time for this perfect photo op. this is a part of my world that makes me happy. if you'd like to see what others share from their distant corners, please go here, thanks to Klaus, the host of this fun meme.
is it just me, or does it seem a little cold for this time of year?

please click on photo to see the tiger in disguise
I imagine either small children or very enthusiastic grandparents live in this house. every holiday you will find their lawn covered with decorations whether it be easter, thanksgiving, or christmas. in general, long islanders love to decorate their homes for many different occasions and holidays. you don't often see a house that does so for every holiday. it's nice.
stay warm today everyone, you may see lots of sun in the above photo, but it's still cold outside on long island!

this was my favorite thing to look at whilst strolling through the hick's spring flower show yesterday. it was very crowded but worth it if you like to look at flowers. it was also a great place to go people watching.
please don't forget to leave a comment here if you'd like to enter my giveaway. I'm celebrating one year of long island daily photo blogging!
happy sunday everyone.

one year ago today I started long island daily photo. I didn't realize until about a week ago that I started this blog on the first day of spring. happy spring everyone! today also happens to be skywatch friday, one of my favorite memes. looking back over my last year of posts I thought it would be nice to revisit some of my favorite long island skies to celebrate today. it was hard to pick just four since I have loved virtually every sky I have photographed for LIDP. these pictures do however, hold a special place in my heart. starting at the top left, the beach on a winter day where I gathered with family for a special memorial, the tree in my neighborhood that hearkens back to my childhood, the early autumn leaves of the rose of sharon in my backyard, and the dune grasses along robert moses beach on a balmy hot summer day. I hope you have enjoyed visiting long island here at LIDP as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you.
lastly, to all who have visited long island daily photo over this past year, I want to say, thank you! and if you would like, please leave a comment here on this page and you will be automatically entered in a giveaway where I will randomly pick someone on April 4, 2009 to receive a book of photographs featured on long island daily photo compliments of the good people at blurb.com!
enjoy our first day of spring everyone!

I just had to snap this fun window display of cupcakes growing out of flower pots. if you click on the photo, you can see the green grass in the pots as well as the green kitchen accessories along with the green lettering on this window which qualifies today's post for blue's true colors meme. if you'd like to see other's take on today's color green, please go here.
so where do you get your kitchen supplies?

please click on this photo to see segway details up close
today is abc wednesday. doesn't it seem like we just had a post about abc wednesday? ? ? time seems to be going by faster every week! anyway I think these segways really are ingenious. they make hardly any noticeable noise and seem at least to be an excellent idea for mall security. right before I snapped this photo, the young man riding the machine was giving me a big smile. I'm afraid I was a bit of a space cadet and just gave him a blank look. sorry mr. segway man, I was just deep in thought! thankfully I woke up from my stupor in time to snap this photo.

this is one of my favorite houses in farmingdale when it comes to the holidays. for christmas they hang a giant wreath you can see here & for valentines day they decorate their window with hearts you can see here & for the last couple of weeks they have lit up their window with pretty shamrock lights as seen in the above photo. nice, isn't it?
I'm not irish, but I love st. patty's day. maybe it is because I have many good irish friends. if you'd like to share a bit of your own world, or just see what is going on in other parts of the world, please go here to join in the fun at the "that's my world" meme created by klaus.
have a safe and happy st. patrick's day everyone.

though I have driven down this road hundreds of times, sadly, I can not tell you the name of it. I can tell you the direction the truck is driving towards is the northern end of the bethpage state parkway. if he were going the other way, he'd be headed towards the bethpage golf course. as I was turning on to this road I saw this truck ahead of me & hoped I'd get a picture while waiting at the stop sign. I was lucky, I got just one shot.

it looks like they are waiting for a new home. sorry for such a late post today. I was holding out so I could participate in hey harriet's supreme shadow shot sunday meme. unfortunately I started shadow hunting very late yesterday & didn't come across anything suitable until late this afternoon. I love these little guys. for more fun shadow shots please go here. enjoy the rest of your sunday!

many high schools have plays around this time of year. garden city high school is showing guys and dolls this weekend & last night I went to see the play les miserables at chaminade. the kids performances were amazing. their last song was so moving it had me in tears. right before the 8:15 curtain, there was an announcement that photography was prohibited. during intermission, I found this photo op. apparently, the school is having a lenten food drive.

actually, this was taken thursday the 12th, but it is my post for today so I am getting by on a technicality. I look forward to participating in this meme every week because it makes me stop and smell the roses so to speak. driving west looking for a pretty scene, I saw nothing but grey icky clouds. when I turned the car around and started heading east there was such a huge difference from west to east it was hard to believe I was looking at the same sky. it was a wonderful surprise. if you'd like to see more beautiful skies from all around the world, please go here thanks to Klaus and his dedicated team of skywatchers.

I have never seen anything like this before. do you think the homeowner is Irish? I wouldn't be completely surprised if he isn't. after all, everyone is Irish around this time of year. whatever the case may be, as I came upon this house, it made me smile. have you ever decorated your house for st. patricks day?

I know, this isn't the most original photo, but she is my dog priscilla & like most people, I love my dog and look for excuses to share her with the rest of the world. while hunting for an H word so I could participate in today's photo meme for abc wednesday I happened to show this photo to my son who then said, "she looks human." so there you have it. if you'd like to see more H representations, please go here, thanks to Mrs. nesbitt.
so, does your pet look human to you?

if you click on this photo to enlarge it, you will be pleasantly surprised to see all the pretty colors and textures. if you'd like, go here to see the same tree at the end of march in 2008. yesterday was much warmer than it has been but it was cloudy & rained off and on. today it's supposed to rain most of the day. I like the warmer weather but I want sunshine too! I know, I'm so demanding.

please click on photo for more spring like details
if you look around at all the trees and grass, for the most part everything still looks quite dormant as it usually does in winter. we are still in winter after all. yet spring is only 13 days away and as you can see, there are some small signs of it popping up, often where you least expect it.

normally this new post would have been up eleven hours ago. I blame it on the time change!
while sitting at the stop sign, I was reminded why I like traveling up and down jericho turnpike. it seems like every time I drive down this road I see something new. check out the different shops by clicking on the photo to enlarge it for a better view.

please click on the firehouse to see more detail
every spring and fall when we change the clocks, many firehouses on long island post signs reminding everyone to change the batteries in their smoke alarms as well. I think that's a great idea. daylight saving time, I'm not so sure about. I must confess, I am not too keen on pushing the clocks forward. how about you? are you looking forward to daylight saving time? today's post is part of shadow shot sunday, australian time. if you'd like to see more shadows please visit hey harriet's over here.

please click on this photo for more tree detail
there is a certain point as you are driving north down main street when you notice this tree on your left. if you are busy or distracted you might miss it. I love how the branches show their splendid design against the sky. watching this tree is one of my favorite things about living in farmingdale.
this post is part of skywatch friday. for more beautiful skies, thanks to klaus, please go here.

this is so sad. I came upon this sign while out walking yesterday and thought maybe just by chance someone who can help might see this here. the owner told me he was lost in the village of farmingdale, between conklin street and prospect street. he responds to the name of kitty and if you click on this photo, you will be able to see the upper right hand corner of his right eye has a distinct arch to it. he's approximately two years old and according to his owner he is a little portly. my heart goes out to this family. it would be so nice if someone knew where kitty is and could help return him to his home. if you have any information please contact 420-1709.

that is what the letters OTB stand for. have you ever been? a quick google search revealed there are at least fourteen of them on long island.
this post is part of ms. nesbitt's abc wednesday and today is the letter G. as fate would have it, I passed by these big bold Green letters while driving home. happy wednesday everyone.

though we are not really surprised, did anyone expect this much? we've had a bitter cold winter here on long island with manageable amounts of snow, but this is a big one. schools were closed and many businesses either stayed closed monday, opened late or closed early. we could all use at least one snow day a year, and this was perfect timing too. when everyone is really sick of winter, it's nice to get a break!
this is the big news over in my little corner of the world. if you'd like to see what is happening in other parts of the world, please go here thanks to klaus, the host of that's my world.

please click on photo for more snow detail
doesn't everything look better when it snows in the winter? if we all have to deal with lots of snow today, it is my hope that at least we all get a snow day. how about you? personally I wouldn't mind extending the weekend. I'd definitely spend part of the day curling up next to our priscilla with a cup of hot cocoa. I know... I like to dream! if you are stuck at home, what will you be doing?

& hopefully, will go out like a lamb! what better signifies the beginning of march than st. patrick's day? it seems like a holiday people love to celebrate whether they are irish or not. this church is doing so in the form of a dinner of corn beef and cabbage.
this post is part of hey harriets shadow shot sunday. if you'd like to see more shadows, please go here. otherwise, how do you celebrate st. patrick's day?
