Long Island Lives: for the love of driving

please click on photo to see Big G up close

my dad, likes to drive, a lot. so when he grew tired of his towing business he took a job as a school bus driver. 18 years later at the young age of 76 and much to the surprise of everyone, today will be his last day - he is officially retiring. when he gave the big news to his elementary school passengers, one of them said, " oh really, when are you coming back?"
I have a feeling he will be sorely missed.
when asked how he will fill his new found freedom, my dad said he plans on volunteering his driving skills to seniors in his local church transporting them to and from doctor appointments.

this post is a part of my world tuesday. to share a part of yours or just see more of others, please go here, thanks to klaus for hosting with his team of helpers, sandy, wren, fishing guy and sylvia.

Oh, that's really nice. Maybe I should move to the US to drive a school bus. Seriously, I wouldn't mind. More power to your dad.

A great way to spend his retirement. I'm sure his new riders will appreciate him even more than the old ones.

What a great dad! I see no reason to retire at 76 - he's like the energizer bunny, just keeps going. Love all that yellow.

aw, congrats to your father for a wonderful service. I had an older bus driver when I was in high school and he is fondly in my memory. I'm sure it's the same for your dad.

that's great he's keeping active. Great for him!!

Your father sounds like a special man. I am sure the little ones will miss him, but am certain the Seniors will appreciate him greatly. It is wonderful that he can still be such a vital human with such unselfish actions.

What an inspiring story! I'm sure he WILL be missed, but how lucky those elderly church members are going to be to have him!

Thanks for your visit and very kind comment!

What a wonderful man... what a nice smile .. and I truly laughed out loud at the 'when will you be back' comment ...

I am sure its how he stays happy and young .. keeping busy doing good .. driving people ... and I am sure your mom likes that he gets out of the house!

I would like your father to adopt me.

How wonderful, really wonderful, it is that he's going to remain active and help others in his retirement. He's a good man. Not surprising that he's your dad. Not at all.

You still look mahvelous, Big G!! Congrats on your "retirement." I hope the seniors appreciate your corny jokes as much as I did when you used to give us rides in the tow truck. Good luck on your new adventure.
Hugs,
Terre
