inflatable christmas

please click on photo to see more detail

I am not sure what to say, how could I possibly describe this? a modern day creche perhaps? I definitely haven't seen this blow up decoration before. it amazes me how creative people can be trying to think up new ways to sell christmas. somehow this creativity gives me a lot of hope for this country's economy. what do you think? are things getting any better financially speaking?

suburban shadows

please click on photo to see more shadows

it was so sunny yesterday and unfortunately I spent the better part of it indoors, but that's alright because I was able to find this beautiful scene while hunting for shadow shots as the sun was setting. it's hard to believe this picturesque woodland landscape is in my long island suburban neighborhood - the light was perfect for autumn shadows.
I hope you are enjoying your sunday.

reflections in a bird bath

please click on photo to see reflection up close

so I stayed home yesterday, no black friday shopping for me. though I did go to the vitamin store and buy some vitamins, but other than that I worked in my garden and this is where I found a piece of the sky -in the bird bath. in case this photo looks familiar it is because I've posted photos of this bird bath before during spring and winter. I guess now all I need is a shot of this in the summer.

it's official...

please click on photo to see lights up close

the day after thanksgiving means, for at least most retail stores, the beginning of the christmas season. this christmas tree stands in the village of farmingdale and decorations are beginning to pop up everywhere else as well. today is also known as "black friday", a phenomenon explained here. how do you plan on spending the day after thanksgiving?

today is skywatch friday, if you'd like to see more skies from all around the world or if you'd like to add your own sky, please go here, thanks to klaus and his team, sandy, wren, fishing guy, louise and sylvia.

blow up turkey

please click on photo to see turkey up close

blow up lawn decorations are popular in america, so is celebrating thanksgiving, a holiday that dates back to the earliest americans giving thanks for their surviving long enough to eat their hard earned harvest. in modern times most people eat turkey on this day. my personal preference is ziti with a side of stuffing. what favorite food will you most look forward too today?
happy thanksgiving everyone!

S is for stuffed animals

please click on photo to see the cuteness of these animals up close.

waiting at a red light I had the distinct feeling I was being watched. then I spied these guys peering out the back window of the car in front of me. I suspect the driver thinks of them as living breathing and quite real.

unicycles aren't for the faint of heart

leave it to kids to be up for anything! if anyone suggested to me that I should go try and ride a bike that has just one wheel implying all the while how much fun it would be, would I dare try it? actually I would. well, maybe. actually... I don't think so. though I do have a vague memory of trying to ride one as a kid. how about you, have you ever tried riding a unicycle?

a giant bottle of perfume

remember I was at the mall last week and I was complaining about the lack of creative window displays? this was one of the best displays I found this last saturday-I guess it is better than nothing.
happy monday everyone. I hope today is a good day for you!

blue shadows on plywood

I love how the landowner used this wood type enclosure as a canvas to paint this wonderful color blue. the shadows caught my eye as did the remaining bright yellow leaves on the tree overhead.

early evening sunset

as we merged onto the northern state parkway my son leaned over and snapped this photo catching reflections of the sun as it was setting. I don't know what it is exactly, but there is something about this photo that reminds me of the 70's.

skies and other interesting things

while waiting at a red light in traffic I love to have my camera ready so I can spy different scenes through its viewfinder. jericho turnpike is a good place to do this because every time you drive down it, you notice something new. first this particular group of buildings caught my eye.
interesting to look at, don't you think? click on the photo if you'd like a closer look.

then I noticed the tops of these same buildings and how pretty the sky looked as their backdrop, even with all the wires involved. the wires seemed to add a certain something to the scene.
after which I noticed this design in the sky, as seen in the photo below. I love the colors and shapes and different textures.

I thought this was a pretty ingenious place to post this sign. thousands of cars pass by this spot everyday. I would love to know if anyone volunteered. please click on this photo if you'd like to see the sign clearer.

r is for red

please click on photo to see red details up close

I know, I know, it's too soon for christmas but for some reason all of the early decorations aren't bothering me this year. maybe it's because I am getting older and time seems to go by faster and faster and I know it will all be over before we can say happy new year.

courageous road crew

I was surprised to see these men tarring this road in the middle of rush hour. they were right in the center of a major intersection at glen cove road and jericho turnpike. I'd be a nervous wreck if I had to deal with traffic in this way-they must have nerves of steel. driving on long island can sometimes be akin to fearing for your life, never mind being a pedestrian in the middle of things.

golf course in the rain

the rain drops on my car window are nicely crisp and clear but the landscape is a bit blurry. if I told you that was the effect I was looking for would you believe me? he-he-he, it is true though, I really was hoping this would be the result . I've photographed this golf course many times before, here and here are spots very close to the one above. please click on the above photo to get a better view of the landscape and raindrops.

shadow shot sunday?

please click on photo see shadows up close

does my shadow in the window count as a shadow or is that technically a reflection? there are some shadows around the mannequins hands and inside the tree but they're not exactly the dramatic shadows I hoped to get for today's post. I do like this photo for some reason though.
I was at the walt whitman mall yesterday and was a little disappointed with the window displays. very few windows looked enticing or inviting for that matter. I guess with all the cutbacks in much of the labor force, it seems as though many stores let go of their creative departments.

ida makes her presence felt on long island

please click on photo to see reflections up close

more rain and lots of high winds, like bordering on tornado type winds, winds that required my trying to shut my screen door with both hands! thanks to ida we were drenched most of the day yesterday, but at least it wasn't freezing outside. plus, the weather was kind enough to supply us with some nice "weekend reflections"!

sky as seen from inside trader joes

please click on photos to see more detail

yesterday the sky around me was so flat and plain all day I was forced to look at it from another vantage point. can you see it outside this window? that is exactly what it looked like. the photo below was taken on the road to trader joes. lucky for me I am not the guest host posting for today's skywatch over at this wonderful meme! if you can, please check out heidi fossen's amazing skywatch photo here, it really is beautiful!

mundays luncheonette

Thanksgiving-Decorations-at-Mundays-Luncheonette

rarely does my son have off from school so when he is off, I like to let him sleep in. as we all know, teenagers require a lot of sleep so we got off to a late start celebrating no school. we decided on a late lunch at mundays in huntington, which was packed to the gills with with all the other kids and their moms who had the same idea. our waitress marveled at how quickly we were seated - within 10 minutes. the food and atmosphere at mundays was the perfect antidote to school and work.

need I say more...?

how come the end of the year seemingly happens so quickly? that is the first thing I think of when I see the first holiday decorations out in stores. these christmas trees were on display at the home depot yesterday. I should also add yesterday's high temperature was 64 degrees! is it possible to have indian summer on november 9th? according to wikipedia, it is. I guess with the economy being the way it is holiday merchandise is put out early with the hope that consumers will start spending.

autumn color in the suburbs

do you believe the color in this photo? I was sitting at a stop sign in garden city around 4pm marveling at the late day sunlight illuminating the scene before me. it was golden. check out the subtle shadow alongside the sunlit tree in the middle of this photo. please click on this to see this landscape in all of its splendor.

autumn reflected

please click on photo to see reflections up close

I am sure it is obvious to many of you that I like photographing long island. I like to take pictures every day but sometimes I feel I come up a bit short. my goal in creating this blog was to try and document different things people see every day here on this island but may not fully notice. participating in the various memes that circulate throughout the internet helps me look at things differently than I think I normally would. for me it is an exercise in creativity.
today's photo was inspired by the meme "weekend reflections" hosted by james over at newtown daily photo. please go here if you'd like to check out a truly awesome reflection shot by james himself.

thinking green...

please click on photo to see more detail

such a simple reminder to those who may be tempted to throw anything into the storm
drains we have here on long island. these drains are vital in keeping our streets and homes protected from flooding. unfortunately, this doesn't seem to keep the family of raccoons from living in one that is located across our street!
earlier this week I was listening to an interview with the professor daniel pauly on national public radio. he was discussing how overfishing and the pollution of the oceans could eliminate seafood from our diets entirely. I became a vegetarian years ago due to my concerns for the environment though I always included fish as my main source of protein- which technically makes me a pescetarian. anyway, after hearing what this professor had to say, I am forced into re-thinking my "pescetarian" diet.

today's post is part of "think green thursday" thanks to host michelle from rambling woods. please go here if you'd like to post a green idea of your own and share it with the rest of us!

p is for pigeon

please click on photo to see pigeons with an attitude up close

and these three pigeons are suburban pigeons. see the two with their backs to the one tentatively stepping onto the grass? they were giving him the cold shoulder. every time he tried to get closer to those two, they booted him onto the sidewalk. now why did they have to be like that?

as the full moon rises...

please click on photo to see more detail

last night I could sense the traffic rushing home more quickly than usual. I wondered if everyone wanted to get home in time to watch some baseball. someone from my neighborhood responded to my post yesterday about how quiet the streets were. she said it was due to the fact that everyone was at home glued to their TV sets watching the world series. I think she may be right. so, are you a yankee fan? game six is wednesday, I can feel the tension mounting...

and the darkness descends...

please click on photo to see night time details

this photo was taken around 6pm-ish last night. the street was so quiet it was depressing. it was as if everyone packed it in for the night and began their five month hibernation ritual. I know, I am probably exaggerating a tad bit but I do not like the short days of the year and the days are just going to continue getting shorter, at least around these parts, until sometime around mid to late december depending upon which latitude you are at in the northern hemisphere. you can read more about that here if you'd like. for now, my greatest consolation is the days do start to get longer just as the winter season begins, so at least we have longer days when it starts to freeze. how do you feel about the shorter days?

fancy pumpkins with shadows

please click on photo to see details of pumpkins photographed through a screen

these are the fanciest pumpkins I have ever seen! my twin nieces are probably two of the most dedicated people I know when it comes to pumpkin carving. aren't their pumpkins beautiful?

and then there is my pumpkin...
