suburban scenery

this is not an uncommon scene here in the suburbs of long island. various types of industry mixed in with strip malls, a mini garden and a lone residential house make for an interesting landscape. I often wonder who wouldn't mind living next to giant smoke stack on a major thoroughfare. perhaps they don't have a choice or maybe they don't mind at all.

Yep, there's an area here like that, too. Worldwide, I guess.

I cannot imagine living there. I'm sure I would be very unhappy. Still - I can imagine it being a long-time home and the residents just not being able to face leaving.

Yep, have that here too. Perhaps the house has been converted to a business? Many people are just happy to have a roof over their heads.
I had to enlarge the photo to see all the things you talked about - I wouldn't enjoy living with all that, but can imagine that some might.

I think every area has these spots
this could be in my town as well

This scene is typical of so many city areas ... one wonders why our city "fathers" couldn't do a better job of planning.

Re: Fireplace at Stone Creek. Yes! It's been freezing here for two weeks - in the 30s and 40s during the day and 20s (occasionally in the high teens) at night!

We've lived in Florida 25 years and have never experienced this kind of cold before.

Fortunately, the snap seems to have broken and we should be back to normal tomorow (70s) - it's 68 now.

And that's not to mention the telephone poles. Have you ever noticed that there are almost no telephone poles in NYC, btw? All the wires are underground.
