leaves of spring

most trees around here have their leaves out by now which is great, unless you're allergic. yesterday I was walking my dog on main street and someone driving by in their car sneezed so loud you could hear it from the sidewalk.

raining blossoms

the wind was whipping these blossoms from the many flowering trees all over jericho turnpike. piles of them spread across the pavement as a result. this photo doesn't nearly capture the beauty of it, but you get the idea. I think if I'm going to continue this picture taking I better get a better camera!
so how has your week been so far?

three azaleas

can you find them? I guess their bright colors are hard to miss. I love the purple one on the right. it reminds me of the azalea I posted on long island daily photo in may of 2008. they seem to be blooming a bit early this year.

dandelions after the rain

and it rained most of yesterday, which means we will probably have a lot more dandelions than we did two days ago. they really are a neat flower, especially if you look at them up close. I never knew dandelions had so many little curly Q thingies. now I can't wait to inspect them more carefully in person.
also, if you want to get a better look at the raindrops, please click on this photo to enlarge.

bridge over jericho turnpike

a rainy sunday and a little cool too, but the bright green on the trees all around us helps make up for it. I'm late joining in so if you get the chance, please pop on over to san francisco bay's daily photo to check out the "sunday bridge series". thanks for hosting louis la veche!

a good dog, with reflections

if this were my dog I could never leave the window open because I have no doubt that she would try and jump out of it while trying to follow me as I left the vehicle. this cute pups owners were inside starbucks leisurely enjoying their lattes as she calmly waited. she wasn't too interested in my taking her picture. in fact, I had a feeling I shouldn't get to close to her territory either!

blossoms at the exit ramp and happy earth day!

I know, it's been four whole days since my last flower picture - but that last post I did with flowers in it were fake so that doesn't really count right? do you believe I found these while waiting behind a long line of cars on the seaford oyster bay expressway (aka the S.O.B.) ? aren't they pretty?

N is for nostalgia

thanks to my son ian, he managed to get a decent picture of this very unique car as we were driving on the seaford oyster bay expressway last saturday. does anyone have any idea what type of car this is? I've probably said it before, but I wish our modern cars had this much character.

mental health day...

I almost didn't go to the beach yesterday afternoon. then I would have missed this.
when I got to the beach it was as if nature was putting on a show. the sunlight was moving all over the landscape creating bright spots and darkness and shadows and shimmers. big puffy clouds covered whole sections of sky leaving the other half a bold bright blue. the spectacle stopped me dead in my tracks as I stood and pondered how close I live to such awesome beauty.

wallen's shadows

sorry for the late post. this weekend has flown by for me and I think I may have a touch of spring fever, which in my case means I seem to sleep a lot! though, according to wikipedia there seems to be a wide array of very interesting definitions for spring fever that I've never heard of, not that that means anything, it's not as if I am an authority on the subject. in any case, today's shadows are happening at the wallen's IGA in bellport. please visit tracy's fun meme, shadow shot sunday if you'd like to join in or if you'd like to see more shadows.

bellport sky

I always wanted to check out the town of bellport here on long island, so last sunday I finally did and I'd like to report that I was abundantly impressed. bellport reminds me of what a lot of long island used to be like when I was a kid. it's an actual small town surrounded by a neighborhood. I went last sunday and as I drove around I noticed many people walking from their homes into their town. I know, a novel idea right? that's how it used to be though before there were malls. when the malls started being built I don't know if anyone realized what that would do to small towns but that is the reason why there are so very few small towns left. this photo was taken on the boardwalk right on the bellport bay. the sky had a shimmery feeling to it that reminded me of summer. I'll post more about bellport tomorrow.

blossoms in the suburbs

this is a good representation of what you see if you happen to be traveling around long island these last few days. trees are blossoming left and right, along with some amazing weather.
searching google for a flower quote, I came upon this one by claude monet,

"I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers."

it's hard for me to imagine the world without monet's paintings!

our yorkie, priscilla and her little face

it's very hard to say no to this face, but for her well being I have been practicing and priscilla is all the better for it. today is my first entry into the "face of the week" meme hosted by sistertex over at "spacial peepol" I thought it would be a good meme for me to try since I rarely photograph people, I mean faces - even though we all know by now priscilla is a person in disguise.

red pansy shadows and a big thank you to tracy from "hey harriet"!

it's gotten a bit chilly here again, down to 48 degrees from a high of 90 just a few days ago. a good thing for this cold hardy pansy. I was worried this tiny blossom would start to wilt in the heat!
today is shadow shot sunday, a wonderful meme hosted by tracy from the infamous blog hey harriet. a few weeks ago tracy had a giveaway via her etsy shop of which I was happily the winner!  tracy not only so generously sent me the set of four "gluttonous gulls"  her (really cool) TtV ( Through the Viewfinder) prints, she also included the "intimate distances - buddha" photo print  I had picked as my favorite from hey harriet's etsy shop - a wonderful surprise!
if you haven't seen tracy's prints, you must check them out, they are the neatest little fine art original prints photographed by tracy herself. she really has an amazing artistic eye and has a wide variety of amusing subjects to choose from. I can't wait to hang the ones I have received, which you can see at her etsy shop if you'd like to check them out. I feel so lucky to have them. thanks tracy!
oh, and don't forget, today is shadow shot sunday too! if you'd like, please head on over and join in the fun.

green reflections on a pond

it's amazing how with just a bit of green the landscape becomes completely transformed. no doubt the sky's blue reflection is a big help too. I have never enjoyed spring as much as I have the last few years. I think it might coincide with my taking so many pictures, making me more aware of my surroundings.

the leaves are starting to show!

little red convertible

I give this guy a lot of  credit for riding this type of car during rush hour on jericho turnpike. it seems so small and he appeared extra vulnerable compared to the larger enclosed cars around him. if you look carefully you may notice another car with their "top" down in front of him to the right. yesterday was the perfect day for driving "topless" with temperatures (according to the weather channel) reaching 84 degrees here on long island - though my outdoor thermometer read 90.

swans as big as a toddler

the bike path in the massapequa preserve was filled with surprises yesterday, this one being the sweetest. other surprises included a hawk soaring overhead as well as watching a pair of inseparable ducks and their human like antics. the preserve is an easily accessible nature sanctuary providing an oasis like antidote to the hustle and bustle of this crowded island, plus it's free!

an ocean of forsythia

karen from alameda california recently wrote asking if I could photograph the forsythia along the meadowbrook parkway. she described it so beautifully I thought I would post a part of what she wrote here.
"...I have always loved seeing the forsythia in bloom along the Meadowbrook Parkway behind Roosevelt Field.  It has always reminded me of waves breaking on the shore of Jones Beach or Fire Island.  Out here in Northern California, forsythia bushes are few and far between and I would love to be able to see that sight again."
So my son Ian and I drove to the parkway and he filmed exactly what karen was talking about. if you would like to see some still photos of the forsythia along the meadowbrook, please visit my long island daily photo tumblr blog. you will see the first four in the slide show are from the parkway.

pink cherry blossoms...

Pink-Cherry-Blossoms

are in abundance at the nassau county museum of art. most kids are off from school this week due to the passover & easter holidays, so I got to spend yesterday afternoon with two artistic teenagers hanging out at one of my favorite long island museums. it's easy to forget the grey sky when you are surrounded by beautiful gardens, amazing works of art and interesting people. though I hear we are in for some sunshine today.
