huge double rainbow over farmingdale

A-Huge-Double-Rainbow-Over-Farmingdale

there WAS a double rainbow this morning! unfortunately I didn't catch it in time but I am here to report that it was totally awesome. not that seeing this by itself was anything to scoff at. it filled up the sky so beautifully. what a great way to start one's day! and I'm sure by now you've seen THE equally if not more awesome double rainbow video on youtube, but just in case you haven't and you need a big smile please go here to do so.
speaking of atmospheric conditions (and its effect on us), who else had some crazy weather throughout last night? as I lay down to sleep I noticed the wind was so powerful I could hear it traveling from a distance as it headed our way. the loud creaking sound I heard as our very old yet beloved house met head on with a powerful gust woke me up instantly. I was sleepy but I still bolted to the couch which made priscilla quite happy - she had already beat me to it and welcomed my company.
to see one other long island rainbow, please go here.

freedom tower

Freedom-Tower-in-Lower-Manhattan

whenever I get the chance to be in manhattan I most always travel either in the village, soho, chinatown, little italy, chelsea or somewhere uptown near the larger museums or broadway or central park or anywhere else but mostly those same places - I guess out of habit. so yesterday when I found myself driving through the cavernous roadways of lower manhattan I was stunned to discover the freedom tower rising up out of the ground almost directly in front of me. I didn't notice the plane in the sky at the time (though I was in my car surrounded by a gazillion people and every type of vehicular traffic you can imagine) but I should add that when I noticed it as I was putting together this post, I did find it a bit unsettling. then I thought of my trip back from milwaukee a few years ago and how our plane had to circle this great island of manhattan as it waited for a space to land back at LaGuardia. you can see my view from that plane ride here. it was awesome seeing the entire island from the sky. we literally circled it four or five times.

more snow (and shadows)

More-Snow-(and-Shadows)-in-Farmingdale-Winter-2013

no one seemed to really know how much snow to expect today. thankfully it wasn't too bad, lots of sleet, the roads didn't really ice up too much and then rain. I can live with that. happy monday everyone!

A Circle of Swans and Ducks

Swans-and-Ducks-at-the-Massapequa-Preserve

it always amazes me how wildlife adapts so easily to frigid temperatures. what isn't evident is the nice couple on the shoreline feeding these guys a lunch of some sort out of a bin they held down for them to freely reach into with their beaks.

the face of debris

Curbside-Trash-in-Farmingdale

I found this curbside lying on the grass waiting for the sanitation workers. evidently it was someone's old headboard for what was once a luxurious bed.

suburban planning?

A-Bright-Future-Includes-STEM-to-STEAM

I have a strong feeling a designer with a vision plan wasn't involved in placing this obtrusive street sign on this neighborhood sidewalk. well thought out suburban planning is a simple example about how good design can have a positive effect on a small town. and this haphazard street sign placement is a perfect example of why we need to encourage the STEM to STEAM initiative. please go here to read more about it.

Majestic Pine

I actually have no idea what the name of this tree is but I am fairly certain it is a pine tree and it does look majestic, don't you think?

snow and trees

Snow-and-Trees-at-the-Massapequa-Nature-Preserve-Winter-2013

another shot from the massapequa preserve - winter is officially here! I just checked the temperature so I feel compelled to report it is 15 degrees outside. earlier we had a high of 23. tomorrow it is going up to 25. stay warm everyone.

Sunset and Snow at Massapequa Preserve

First-Snow-2013-at-Massapequa-Nature-Preserve

it was freezing out today but the sun was shining and the snow was pretty and my childhood friend was in town so we had to go check out the nature preserve. the path was a tad bit icy testing our balance and reflexes along the way but the extra effort required to stay upright was definitely worth it - just look at this view.

Congratulations President Obama

birch tree in farmingdale

so I can stop my complaining now. for me, the last three days of sunshine was like a "shot in the arm". thank you dear sun.

dusk at bethpage golf course

Dusk-at-Bethpage-Golf-Course,NY-Winter

the good news for the day - we had sun and we had it for the entire day! also, this photo was taken at 5:30 this evening and it was still light out. I know, I lead a very boring life.
if you'd like to see a serene sunset over the golf course, please go here.

lance armstrong and biking in montauk

Lance-Armstrong-Confesses-to-Oprah-and-Biking-in Montauk-NY

so, the sun came out for about two hours today. and it's not like I don't like all of our four seasons - I do. I just want some sun in them.
in other news, I am a bit bewildered as to why lance armstrong is giving a two night interview to oprah. I think it's great that armstrong has come clean but wouldn't a ten minute press conference suffice? he could have just read a statement and be done with it.

homage to daryl

Old-Water-Towers-at-Caumsett-State-Park-NY

today's post is a humble homage to daryl and the many water tower wednesday's she has delighted her readers with over at out & about in new york city. I can't look at a water tower anymore without thinking of daryl - only hers are much prettier than the ones pictured above. I shot these two while hiking over at caumsett state park (and I'm not sure I've ever seen ones with hairy legs before either).

vespa milwaukee

Richard-Estes-and-Vespa-Milwaukee

still searching through my archives for inspiration, this photo was taken while on a trip to the very clean city of milwaukee back in 2009. these type of light drenched litter free reflections always remind me of the realist painter richard estes' work. and like wisconsin, illinois is also in the midwest, a distinct part of the U.S. where estes grew up.

cherry blossoms and blue sky

White-Cherry-Blossoms-With-Blue-Sky

the grey weather we've been having as of late has inspired me to search my archives for something cheery. if you look at this photo you might see blue sky and lovely white cherry blossoms but when I look at it I see cherry pie

for more cherry blossoms, please go here and here.

swimming the day after irene

The-Day-After-Hurricane-Irene-at-Gilgo-Beach-2011

looking through my archives, I came across a set of pictures taken the day after irene. people gathered at gilgo beach hoping to enjoy the last bits of summer - in retrospect, a striking contrast compared to what took place after hurricane sandy.

Priscilla...so busted

Yorkie-Priscilla-Busted-on-the-Ottoman

sorry for the awful picture but I had to share this with you. here priscilla stands, on the one piece of furniture she is not allowed on ever, thinking if she cocks her head and looks at me with her sweet face I will somehow not notice. so what do I do? I take her picture of course!

breakfast at "amy's place"

Breakfast-at-Amy's-Place-on-Wickenden-Street-in-Rhode-Island

"tournefeuille a to z..." inspired this breakfast post from my visit to rhode island last sunday. that rye bread you see in the photo above? absolutely superb - as was everything else. check out tournefeuille's breakfast here.

sunday we drove our college student up to rhode island. before we departed, we stopped for brunch and passed this colorful shop advertising a huge blowout sale ($1 and up).

strike a pose

Puppies-Posing-together

not! my sweet niece danielle snapped the best photo of this trio yesterday when the humans in the house decided it would be really cute if we could get a picture of priscilla, daisy and ginger sitting together on the sofa. as you can see, the best-laid plans of dogs and men often go astray...
thank you danielle for sharing your photograph with lidp.

montauk daisies in winter

Winter-and-Montauk-Daisies

I hope we have a mild winter this year. I am so not liking the freezing temperatures we've been having. I keep thinking about the beach and the sun and not wanting to wear a winter coat. oh well, it's only three more months...
I was leaning over a neighbors fence this past autumn examining these daisies when the homeowner came along and asked me what I was doing. I don't think she noticed my camera at first because as I started to answer her, she apologized for interrupting me. she was very sweet.
can you see the insect hiding in the daisy's petals? it's easier to spot if you enlarge the photo by clicking on it.
I think it might be a baby grasshopper.

like circus font

Gershow-Truck-Sunrise-Highway

after a few days of dreary grey weather it was nice to get a glimpse of our winter sun illuminating everything so brilliantly for one last thrill of color before sleep. as traffic came to a standstill, ian pointed out the circus like font on the truck next to us and acted quickly using my iphone to capture the image. it's hard to believe not a single person beeped their horn to try and push us up ahead to the red light. perhaps everyone else was captivated by the sun's magic too.
this photo was created using only available light and an old iphone camera. check out the neon green cab below. pretty neat huh?
thank you ian.

winter is here

Autumn-Leaves-Under-Ice-at-Caumsett-State-Park-NY

as you can see, there was some ice over at caumsett where I hiked with my family the other day. as you can also see, despite the freezing temps, the vegetation wasn't too quick to give up its last breaths! below is a shot of the equestrian center's grounds. though the trails to the long island sound were closed, a walkway loop remained open so people could hike the preserve or ride their bicycles. one brave soul must've circled that loop on his bike passing me at least three times while I walked. I love riding my bike but in the winter it seems so much colder to ride a bike than it does to walk.
hope you had a good first day of 2013. is anyone ready to go back to work yet?
