four star variety hardware

Four-Star-Variety-Farmingdale

please click on photo for greater detail
located in farmingdale on main street, this store reminds me of the old time general stores. from sewing notions to garden hoses, jars and supplies for preserving jellies and sauces, a very decent hardware selection, toys and gifts, they pretty much have everything you need and more. I especially like to go there to get what I need for weekend household fix-it projects. when you have some free time to just relax and take it easy, it's fun to stroll through the store and just take a look around.

stuff a bagel

I know there are more than one of these on long island, but I like the one in farmingdale the best. I think it may be safe to say that many many people on long island visit their favorite bagelry on the weekends, if not during the week for a quick breakfast or lunch. my nieces have told me on more than one occasion that visiting stuff a bagel when they are in town is one of their favorite pastimes. I like bringing them there because they each order exactly what they want & then we get to eat there in a clean, neighborly, and friendly atmosphere.

The S.O.B.

I'll never forget the first time I gave directions to my house when I told my transplanted midwestern friend, "It's easy, just take the S.O.B. east." & she burst out laughing, "who would ever name a road the S.O.B., she demanded. For those of you who may not know, the S.O.B. stands for The Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway. The name is a tad bit misleading since one can actually only drive from seaford to syosset. Go here for some interesting history about the infamous s.o.b.

in montauk on a foggy day. this is a quaint little flower shop that caught my eye as I was driving by in my car. when I saw its name I thought, well, of course that would be its name! despite the fog, you can't help but smile when you see this cheery place. it seems fitting for a day like today what with our never ending thunderstorms.

bunny rabbits in garden city

please click on photo to enlarge

and there are lots of them. it isn't unusual to see more than one hanging out together on someones lawn eating grass. this home actually had a rabbit that had babies on their property. when I got too close to this one, she hopped away flashing her little cottontail from behind. we don't have any bunnies in our long island neighborhood. I usually just see them on nature trails or by the beaches, so this is a rare treat!

Walking down 6th Avenue

please click on photo for greater detail.

yesterday, I watched as the clouds completely covered the empire state building. I must have taken a few dozen shots as I watched the sky change the view in the random way that only mother nature has the power too. just as I was about to leave 6th avenue I quickly turned and snapped this picture. I felt like she saved her best for last. thank you mother nature!

the last few fridays I have been participating in skywatch fridays. go here if you would like to view beautiful skies from all around the world.

walking in the rain

I spent an inordinate amount of time walking through lower manhattan this morning. it was pouring during rush hour. I spotted these two walking down bleecker street just as the rain was letting up. they actually looked like they were enjoying the rain. I am sure most people in the city were relieved after the extreme heat we have just had!

Music Under The Stars

please click on photo to get a better look at the band.

at john j. burns town park in massapequa. as you can see by the umbrellas, it had already started raining by the time lou gramm, the lead singer of foreigner started singing. although I was a little distracted taking photos while juggling my umbrella I must tell you lou's rendition of double vision got the crowd cheering for more. unfortunately the rain became a huge downpour and didn't let up. for more info about free summer concerts go here , scroll down the right side and click on music under the stars.

phone booth in plainview

driving through this shopping center in plainview this telephone booth caught my eye. I can't remember the last time I saw a phone booth, never mind such a fancy one. when I stopped to investigate I found it to be empty! who is the super hero that needs a phone booth to change in? perhaps with the proliferation of cell phones the people of this town decided to help him out.

american museum of natural history

please click on this photo if you would like to see some amazing detail.

if you are new to my site, at times you will discover I like to travel to areas surrounding long island, particularly new york city. one of the great things about long island is our close proximity to wonderful manhattan. in the above photo you see an artists take on the horse. this one is standing outside the american museum of natural history. I also like to visit and see what is happening at other daily photo blogs. lucky for me I stumbled upon kitty's new york portraits. I had to post this photograph after I saw her blog post from saturday. go check her out here. I think you will enjoy her blog too. I'm putting a link to her site in my side bar as well so when you come back to visit me, you will have easy access to some interesting new york photos when you are in the mood.

summer night

yes the heat was oppressively hot yesterday, but still, what could be better than roasting marshmallows around the fire on a summer evening with family and friends? a really cool part is that the fire keeps the mosquitoes from biting you. we were doubly lucky last night as we enjoyed a nearly full moon as well.

balmy, hot and hazy

this is the type of sky we have been looking at all week. it is the ultimate beach weather. it is the kind of weather where you could just sit by the beach and hang out there for the entire day. I love looking at the dune grass in this picture. you can see views like this driving along ocean parkway. please click on the photo for greater detail.

roosevelt field,

a large shopping mall in garden city. the trees pictured here sit alongside one of the exit lanes. I actually took this picture last summer as I was waiting for a traffic light to change across the street. this area is one of the most congested places to drive in long island. although, if you look around a little there is always something nice to see.

nestled in some texas sage

this praying mantis is perfectly camouflaged among the foliage. I was so elated to find this little guy in my backyard. I almost didn't notice him. as soon as I did, I nearly jumped back I was so surprised. then I just stood there in awe for a moment before realizing I needed to get my camera!

fort pond native plants

please click on this photo to experience a wide range of interesting textures.

this is one of my favorite nurseries on long island. whenever I shop there I feel like I am walking around in someones backyard. it is so beautiful and they have many unique items. check out these birdbaths. also notice the cool house in the background. go here to explore their website.

robert moses on sunday

when I look at this photograph I feel very lucky that I live in a place where it takes me all of twenty minutes to get to a beautiful beach. I guess that is one of the cool things about living on an island surrounded by beaches! yesterday there were blue skies with blue water with a hint of green in it. it was that color water that you see down in the florida keys. it's not like that everyday in the summer, but yesterday it was.

echinacea

photo courtesy of ian, please click on flower to enlarge.

also known as the purple coneflower. I have been seeing lots of them in bloom as of late. they are a beautiful drought tolerant flower that is fairly easy to grow here on long island. they don't require much maintenance and will easily spread themselves around your property as their seeds dry out and blow around your yard, and maybe your neighbors, when it's windy. thanks to ian I was able to post this beautiful shot of one them from our backyard.

34th street, manhattan

photo courtesy of ian, please enlarge for more detail

this last thursday while venturing into greenwich village for a visit, my son and I came upon this scene. the woman in the pink baseball hat is teaching the girl how to let her guide dog be her guide. the beautiful canine was totally into the task at hand. it was pretty awesome to witness the three of them working together in the subway. it was even more awesome watching the young girl smiling as she learned.

stormy sky watch

please click on this photo to see the movement of the trees as they are blowing in the wind.

the day this storm came in the family & I were hanging out in the backyard and the clouds started to swirl around in circles. it was just like how I pictured a tornado starting. thankfully there was no tornado though, just some cool shots of mother nature making her presence known. for those of you interested in views of skies all over the world, or for those of you who want to participate in a friday sky watch, check out wiggers world.

it's almost as if his t-shirt says what he is thinking-about waiting for the train that is!. here is a typical passenger to be waiting for the train with his son, heading into manhattan.

Piccola Bussola

is the name of an affordable delicious italian restaurant here on long island. superb, in my view. everything is served family style so whatever anyone orders inevitably gets passed around to everyone you are dining with. we were a party of sixteen so we had a lot to sample from. what you see here is the tortellini alfredo and the shrimp arreganati. you may also notice my sister-in-law serving up the spinach that accompanied the shrimp-delish!

and this is the tree in all its glory.

tree in east hampton

can you imagine having a tree this size in your backyard? someone actually does in the town of east hampton. every time we enter this town you can't help but notice the beautiful white house on the corner as you are entering the town. I love these gnarly roots shown here.

last sunday at robert moses

I am sitting here reminiscing over last sunday at the beach. yes we were covered in a blanket of fog, but it was still beautiful. I probably should have just gone to the beach this weekend. it's usually beautiful at the beach no matter what the weather is.

harvesting cherries

please click on photo to see sis-in-law & hubby pitting cherries

hmm...is this a typical long island activity? I can't say for sure. maybe it's interesting because it's not so typical. whatever the case may be I can tell you that there were easily three times the amount of what is shown here that was harvested in one summer evening from a tiny cherry tree in my own backyard. and because they are quite tart, we made cherry pie too!
read here for more info on cherries and what to do with them.

freedom

it is not uncommon to see a street lined with yellow ribbons here on long island. I passed by this street recently and noticed they had just put up a bunch on all of the trees on their block. are they waiting for someone who just left for the war or is someone about to return home? I think the yellow ribbon is such an important symbol for people waiting for their loved ones. it is also an important reminder to me about what is happening in the world so very far away.

east hampton library

the entire neighborhood of east hampton is an idyllic walk through all things beautiful. check out their library, so quaint, so perfectly appointed. I enjoy their town, but I love their neighborhood. the library sits sort of on the edge of their town a little ways from the hustle and bustle of the store fronts. the library also has a nice little website you may peruse here.

wow! I love hydrangeas. they happen to be one of my favorite flowers. these were taken in the backyard at my brothers house. garden city is a town that functions as a giant garden. it is beautiful. go here if you need to know more about hydrangeas.
