trumpet vine



does anyone know what the ant is actually doing on the flower bud before it blossoms?

So in case you guys were wondering, the ants are attracted to scale. Scale is an oval shaped bump on the stems of the undersides of their leaves which produce a honeydew the ants like. Most importantly, the ants won't harm the flowers!
I had to post a trumpet vine because they are blooming all over Long Island right now.

Very interesting! Thanks for the explanation. I have a photo of some ants (a lot of ants) on a flower. Now that you've explained, I think they were doing the same thing. Hmmm... Maybe I'll post the photo.
