Bellport Sky

I always wanted to check out the town of Bellport here on Long Island, so last Sunday I finally did and I'd like to report that I was abundantly impressed. Bellport reminds me of what a lot of Long Island used to be like when I was a kid. It's an actual small town surrounded by a neighborhood. As I drove around I noticed many people walking from their homes towards their town. I know, a novel idea right? Only this is how it actually used to be in the "old" days before the great proliferation of "mall shopping". This photo was taken on the boardwalk right on the Bellport Bay. The sky had a shimmery feeling to it that reminded me of summer. I'll post more about Bellport tomorrow.

What an exceptional shot. It really does look like it's shimmering. It also looks like it could be one of those very large abstract paintings. Most unique sky!

Ironic. After living for 40 years on Long Island, moving to Brooklyn is what has finally given me that "neighborhood" feel, of walking out my front door and down the block or across the street for pizza or coffee or lotto tickets! On Long Island I relied on my car for EVERYTHING, even the deli "around the corner." Now that parking is an issue, I walk to local places instead of driving, and doing this allows me to see more people, pet their dogs, admire the spring flowering bulbs and trees close-up, etc. People kept saying to me, "you're moving to THE CITY??" but I feel more small town NOW than I ever did in the suburbs of Long Island!

But, Bellport is lovely :-)

Have to say, I know just how missb feels! Bellport is indeed lovely, but I'm partial to Greenport—you should definitely check it out too.

I know, I know! suburban Long Island used to be just like what you find in the the urban areas of NY! When I was a kid, everyone used to be outside on the sidewalks or in front of their houses or walking to their destinations. When I lived in Manhattan years ago, friends from Long Island would not believe how friendly everyone was in the city and how it felt like a real neighborhood.
I think you still have some of that in parts of Long Island, but it's just not as common anymore with all the cars and the Malls.

If you are ever in Western NY, I would love to show you around Brockport. It will remind you of the old days.
