when I first saw this poster glued to this mailbox I thought these two men looked familiar but it took me a few minutes to figure out exactly who they were. does anyone else know who these fine gentlemen are? there is a big hint in the title of this post.

brunch and shadows at cafe angelique

could this be any more decadent? I unexpectedly had to take my son into manhattan last thursday. we arrived early and finished our business quickly - affording us enough time to grab a liesurely brunch at our favorite greenwich village eatery, cafe angelique. yummy. I wish I could tell you I didn't eat anything for the rest of the day!

semi stopping at starbucks

there are some pretty big parking lots here on long island. it's not unusual to see signs posted alerting the public against vehicles parking over night in them too. yesterday morning I stopped for some coffee at my local starbucks and I overheard this trucker ask the employees if it was ok for him to park here. the funny thing is I didn't even notice his truck in the parking lot until I heard him ask about it. when I looked up to check it out I was amazed at how a truck this big and white could stay so clean.

the fire island call of the wild

with only two days left of summer and the autumnal season upon us, my thoughts turned to our last seasonal change before this summer and memories of spring. spring is such a nice long season while autumn seems to be over in a flash by comparison. if the entire fall season were sunny with blue skies and colorful trees it wouldn't appear so short but it often feels like winter before autumn is truly done being autumn. sorry, I don't mean to be a downer. I really do love all of the seasons. what is your favorite season?

these lovely ivy shadows projected onto the castle wall seem like a pretty ingenious way to decorate for an affair to remember. ian's friend had her sweet sixteen party at oheka castle last night. her mom is a gifted and generous woman who really knows how to plan unforgettable events. below is a photo of the castle taken earlier when I first dropped ian off.

robert mose's secret beach

I wanted to share a part of robert moses that most people don't get to see. my childhood friend was visiting this week and we decided we'd take advantage of the still warm sunny weather and get our exercise on the beach.
if you go to the small golf course over at robert moses, there is a path across from it where you can walk to the ocean. if you make a right & head towards the jetty, (it's about a mile) you come to a more secluded beach with an inlet. I've heard that it is not advisable to swim in this area because of the cross currents and also, there is no lifeguard either. I am sure you can guess by the tire tracks in the photo below there are a few off road vehicles that like to congregate here, mostly fishermen from what I can tell. it is so peaceful and quiet here I can certainly see why.

last night's vampire weekend at radio city music hall

one word: transcendent. actually I'm sorry, I can't stop there. from the moment these guys appeared onstage, the room came alive. people young and old, sober and not sober, sprang to their feet and the crowd roared, I mean ROARED and with so much incredible delight you couldn't help but feel uplifted by their sheer joy. I haven't experienced anything like this at a concert since I saw U2 back in my college days. there was so much positive energy in the room it was as if we were all unified, as if the building and everything in it became one living breathing organism - much to the delight of the band and their audience who seemed to sing and dance as one. in fact, I actually felt the floor moving and I was one of the sober ones. yes, that was a little scary since I did fear I may die in a building collapse, but I figured, at least I would die happy.
if I could, I would do it all over again tonight.

technically, he is not exactly an icon, but for some reason that is the word that entered my mind when I saw this guy and his giant burger.

wonder wheel at coney island

I love ferris wheels and the one at coney island is magnificent. I sat in the outside stationary car so I could get a clear view without the car rocking back and forth. I was surprised to see the verrazano narrows bridge in the distance.

this next photo shows the swings at luna park as seen from the top of the wonder wheel. what parent would let their kid ride on a swing like that? do you see how high that thing is? well, I must admit, I let my son go on that ride and I think I may do so myself next time as well.

a white rose of sharon

I've been waiting for this one to bloom. it's the only white rose of sharon out of about a half a dozen or so growing in my backyard. all the rest are pinks and purples. this photo is a credit to the sun's handiwork.

on a clear day in coney island

I have been wanting to visit coney island since the beginning of this summer. finally, yesterday I had my chance. it was the perfect day, low humidity, cloudless blue skies and not too crowded. we may have gotten there a tad bit early. the rides open at noon and I think we arrived around 10:30, which was actually quite nice since I felt like we had the place to ourselves for a little while .
I had to laugh when I saw this sign posted by the cyclone, which by the way is a new york city landmark.

remembering september 11th...

this brave new york city firefighter was only 46 when he died while securing the safety of the men of engine company 21 on september 11th. his memorial can be found at robert moses beach since he was also a member of the jones beach lifeguard corps for 25 years.

village stationary closed

this side of main street in farmingdale has had some bad luck with store closings lately. I'm hoping a little eatery like an old fashioned luncheonette or even a new stationary will fill this vacancy quickly. 

heavenly ice cream at the five pennies creamery

alexa, a fellow new york blogger, was right when she guessed the name of this ice cream place almost two months ago. not only did miss alexa know it was indeed called five penies creamery, she knew that it was on park avenue in rockville centre! and although I was entranced with this beautiful chandelier the last time I was there, for some reason the name escaped me, so thank you dear alexa! 
last week I finally went back and I am so glad I did, the ice cream was heavenly!

last evening at robert moses

with everything going on last week with priscilla I needed to catch up on a job I am working on so I wound up working most of yesterday - which was fine, it was good to catch up on things. then at the last minute I went to the beach for a quick evening walk. it wasn't crowded, it was cool and the water was very warm. I am so spoiled by the beaches here.

labor day and dinner for schmucks

I was originally worried I would dislike 'dinner for schmucks', though my fears were immediately quelled upon seeing the beautiful dioramas that accompanied the opening credits. I just thought the mice dressed up and posing in different heartwarming scenarios was the sweetest thing. the movie turned out to be right up my alley -  better than I thought it would be. please excuse the picture quality, I snapped this while inside the movies early last week. I thought this diorama from the movie was perfect for a labor day holiday post.
I hope you all have your feet up today (at least at some point) and are enjoying nice weather. thankfully our weather here in new york has been sublime, sunny, breezy and warm but not hot.
p.s. priscilla has been wobbly from the anesthesia all weekend but she has been getting better every day and adjusting to her medicine. she has also been quite hungry which I also believe is a good sign. I am so happy she is better. thank you again for all of your kind words.

grapevine with shadows

my husband just told me that this summer's heat was a record breaker. he must have read it in the new york time's website. last night was the first time I've had to wear a long sleeve layer over my summer blouse in probably about three months. it was so weird exiting the movie theater and feeling a chilly breeze!
I think we may have been the last two people on long island to see the movie 'inception'. I have to agree with everyone who told me to make sure I saw it on the big screen but I also have to say my expectations were too high given the tremendous word of mouth buzz. so of course I expected more. but I'm a sucker for leonardo dicaprio so it wasn't too disappointing and even though michael cain was only in it for about 5 seconds he made it that much better too. all in all it was good fun which is always nice.

labor day weekend, a block island sunset and a trip to Egypt

with the labor day holiday weekend upon us, I thought a block island sunset would be the perfect last photo to share from our block island vacation. technically, summer ends when autumn begins on the 23rd. somehow, at least here in america, many people seem to think labor day marks the unofficial end of summer. I for one refuse to go along with this concept.

speaking of holidays - it's never too soon to plan the next one. especially now since the cold weather will quickly be upon us and the most interesting destinations seem to fill up fast.  I have heard november and december is a great time to get a good deal for a vacation in egypt. I've recently come across this link to "egypt holidays". and hot weather and year round sunshine always sounds good when you live in the north east. can you imagine the photo opportunities I could take advantage of? I mean, I'm not exactly a status seeker, but even I would love to have my photo taken in front of the pyramids.

Priscilla is home!

I can't tell you how good it feels to have our dear little priscilla back home! she has been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. she's been on medication for seizures for the last three years but they were mild by comparison to what took place this last wednesday. the good doctors at long island veterinary specialists have increased her medicine and feel she will be ok. she's a little wobbly  and spending most of her time sleeping but all of her tests have come back normal so thankfully she is very healthy and will be back to her usual self once she gets the rest she needs from the past few days.
I feel we were very lucky to have been home when it happened & doubly lucky to have her back home with us again. thank you for all of your kind words and thoughts and prayers for priscilla, everyone. it really meant a lot to me and my family.

priscilla's in the hospital...

please say a prayer for our dear priscilla. she started having cluster seizures yesterday afternoon, something that has never happened before. her MRI and x-rays showed nothing wrong and late tomorrow we will find out about her other tests. I almost didn't post this but I know my friends here would want to know so they could send her good wishes. hopefully she will be home soon. we really miss her.
here she is resting comfortably on the cool floor after a busy day of chasing squirrels.
