Farmingdale's Dairy Barn

Dairy-Barn-Long-Island

Notice how this building is painted red just like an old fashioned barn you'd see in the country - only this isn't the country and this isn't a real barn. Dairy Barn is a drive through convenience store people frequent when they need to get something they need like milk, a loaf of bread or some ice cream. Maybe they just don't want to take the time to park their cars or wait in line at the supermarket in their pajamas. Whatever the case may be, I have seen them here on long island since I was a kid.

A drive-through convenience store? That's new to me.

And I thought I had seen it all when I saw the multitudes of drive-through daiquiri bars in southern Louisiana.

What happened to the law against drinking and driving?

Really interesting. As far as I know, we haven't anything like it in Italy.

That's amazing! Never saw anything like that and I think it has lots more class than those drive-up wedding chapels they have in Vegas!

Is that the one on Merrits Road? I haven't been there since I was a kid.

Ming I can't believe there is such a thing as drive through daiquiri bars-that is wild. I guess not in Louisiana though.

Pietro I can't wait to go back to Italy!

Lydia, drive up wedding chapels??? I'm so glad I posted this so I could hear about these other interesting places!

Good eye Bill, it is the one on Merrits road, how did you know? You just gave me an idea to take my son there just so he could see what it's like to patronize one. We haven't been there since he was real little.

This takes me back to younger days. Sadly, I see less and less of these around the island. There used to be one in my hometown that closed in the mid-90's. My mom remembers it being there when they moved into the house in 1964.

only too happy to oblige Louis, LOL!

I know what you mean Morty. This morning I decided to start photographing ever Dairy Barn I see before they all disappear. I managed to get a good shot of one over on Broadway in Massapequa. I know there is one in Merrick and one in Huntington as well.

Oh, I miss Dairy Barn! How many times I have thought of it when my old joints are aching and I have to climb in and out of the car again just to pick up milk or bread.

When we first moved to LI about 12 years ago, Dairy Barn used to have milk in glass bottles. You'd return the empty bottles and get a new one.

Sadly, they don't do that anymore. I think there was a fire where they did the bottling and they never did it again.

I recognized the ugly building next door. I always hated that building, even when I was a kid.

We were at that Dairy Barn all the time. And I remember how disappointed I was the first time I we went and I didn't see any cows.

I go to the one on Main St. in Sayville now. Old memories come alive...

I love the photo, especially the way the delicate light compliments the color of the barn. Nice!

Bobbie, I think your comment is a perfect testament as to why people like the D.B.

Luvmyboys, yeah, you know I remember those glass bottles too now that you mention it.They really added a bit of authenticity to the whole idea.

Bill, you have a great memory. I'm glad you are commenting here because you are triggering mine. You may not believe this but you reminded me of how I thought there would be cows there too.
I'll have to go photograph the one in Sayville now as well.

I'm glad everyone found this interesting. It has been really fun reading your comments.

tr3nta, birdlady, Arnold and Paz, thanks for stopping by too.

I love this photo! The combination of natural light and the store lights give it an otherworldly look that is so great. Thanks for posting.
I moved to Long Island 15 years ago, against my will I might add. Upon seeing these weird drive through Barn-like structures, I hated Long Island even more. Are Long Islanders that lazy, they can not even get out of the car? Well, my how time heals all wounds. There is nothing like driving home, remembering ONE item that you need to pick up, and seeing the lights still on at Dairy Barn! Yell out the item you need, and the amount of money you are handing over, so the cashier can bring both the item and your change at the same time. Now that is easy. I have to confess, Dairy Barn is not so bad after all!!!! :) OR, maybe I have actually turned into one of those 'Lazy Long Islanders".

I grew up with Dairy Barn. We used to go there in high school because it was drive thru beer and they almost never checked ID. Order went something like this....some of the Entenmann's donuts there, a bag of doritos, 2 packs of cigarettes, a bag of ice and 2 cases of Budweiser please. ID? We showed you last time!
