Sumac at the Long Island Nature Sanctuary

I find the shadows depicted in this plant beautifully subtle. This was late afternoon over at the Uplands Farm Nature Sanctuary last weekend. The sun was hitting everything with just enough light to make all the farm's surrounding beauty look even more perfect. If anyone knows the name of this delightful plant, please do tell!

update~ Thanks to my friend over at sweet repose, the above plant has been identified as a Sumac!

You are right -- the shadows are very subtle here. What kind of fruit/flower is that?

What a beautiful, rich red you have captured in this shot. Like everyone else, I'd love to know what flower it is.

Beautiful scarlet sumac bud. Sometimes I just like clicking away when I am out on a nature shoot, then come home to download and find the surprises...sometimes those are the best shots. Something so mundane, yet so profound when the eye is forced to see what it didn't see.

I am allergic to sumac so I know exactly what this beauty is! I do love the bright red flower cones which the plant produces. Your photo is so perfect for fall with all its seasonal colors on display.
No idea, sorry. It's pretty though!

A brilliant red for a brilliant shadow!!

you make a good point - the shadows in the flower are naturally subtle, but noticeable enough to make such a contrast, that each pod is perfectly defined.
