a "happening"

have you ever heard of a "happening"? wikipedia explains a "happening" as a performance that can take place anywhere and is meant to be considered art. last september my son ian and I came upon this sign while walking past union square in manhattan. of course we had to wait and see, you know, what was going to... happen.
a minute or two later and seemingly out of nowhere, four musicians popped up and began to play some very good music. it was pretty cool. check out juliusc to find out more on their myspace page.

today is abc wednesday thanks to our host mrs. nesbitt and her team, sylvia, troy, roger, barb, jay and gattina. the letter for the day is H. please go here to join in the fun.

I'm so fascinated by the woman in the foreground that I could hardly take my eyes off of her to look at the musicians. She is a show stealer. Anyway, this happening thing reminds me of the youtube video I saw of the performance in the Brussels (?) train station...Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkBepgH00GM

I'm sure it was well rehearsed, but probably not in the actual venue. It's fairly magical. I like the concept of a happening, wherever it occurs.

What a fun post, Lily!! I love to "happen" on something like that, that I didn't expect! My oldest son is a musician and plays with several bands in Dallas although he has a more serious job as a graphic artist in the art department of a University there. I always enjoy my trips to Dallas and getting to go listen to the bands. Always fun! Hope your week is going well! Enjoy!

Union square is mine of photo ops and you caught well this one. Christine is right: the woman with the camera is 'framing' the real show with her presence in foreground.

I agree about the woman in the foreground. I thought she was a 'dummy' for a minute.

Hearing 'happening' makes me think of the sixties...sigh.

And I love the 'in five minutes' sign....5 minutes from when?

ha.
I haven't seen such a thing and will have to keep my eye out. Union Square is perfect for such performances.

NYers are such attention getters. Lol.

Sounds fun. I have never witnessed a happening but would love to stumble across one. Great shot, the woman with the camera does stand out but I was caught by the woman center bottom.

Happening, that is a good one! I love that sign and the imagination and anticipation it evokes.

I had the same reaction as Christine .. that sleek shiny woman in the foreground steals the show.

In my day, a happening was usually a protest or an unannounced artistic expression of some sort ..

I thought the same about the woman in the foreground! I thought it was a bronze statue!

And I would love to see a sign about a happening!

like miss b I thought the bald woman was maybe a bronzed statue - actually I thought it might be a guy but with that earring surely not but if a gal she must have a strapless top on but a what a polished pate.

Hi Christine, yes I have seen that performance & I agree, it is magical.
here is the link for those of you who haven't seen this.

I have to agree with everyone about the woman in the foreground. she was pretty amazing.

Chuck, lots of people were already hanging out there, but a few people waited for them, myself included. everyone definitely seemed to enjoy it - their music was filled with lots of positive energy.

I'm fascinated by the woman in the foreground too! And I also love to "happen" upon whatever interesting thing may be going on in Union Square. This all reminds me of London in the '60s—when "happenings" were definitely happening!
Yes, I've seen "happenings" on YouTube from time to time, usually unannounced. This looks like fun.

I do not know "happening" has such a specific meaning. Must be a marvelous experience to see this performance. The black lady in the front also caught my attention. Is she an audience or a performer?

Lily I love your blog! This is an amazing photo. Like everyone else I was very taken with the presence of the woman in the foreground. A wonderful "snap shot" of life..
