my favorite places to eat on block island

I loved eating here. the food is fairly reasonably priced and if you sit outside on the grand porch, you get an ocean view plus a view of everyone walking by on water street.
in the picture below, you can see 'the ice cream place' sign but not the ice cream shop. that is under the arch and around the back of the building. we had ice cream for dessert there every night we were in block island. it's homemade and very creamy - yum!
I took both these photos around 7am one morning when I woke up early to watch the sunrise with my hubby and our son ian - which explains the warm sunlit glow on these buildings as well as the empty sidewalks. it was so nice and quiet and definitely worth getting up for.

flowers the size of dinner plates

Dinner-Plate-Sized-Flowers-at-Block-Island,RI

today's flower was found on, you guessed it, block island. I spotted this while out riding my bike. and though it may be hard to tell by looking at this photo, the largest white flower is bigger than my rather large adult hand.
please visit "today's flowersif you'd like to see more beautiful blooms or if you'd like to add your own.

sky over island cemetery

visiting this cemetery on block island provides a rich sense of island history as well an amazing hilltop view of the surrounding area. I was lucky enough to be there about an hour before sunset to catch this golden sky.

cresecent beach, block island & happy birthday ian!

for those of you who have gotten to know my son through his photo contributions to LIDP (see yesterday's flag photo) and therefore might like to know, today is ian's birthday! given the fact that I am not sure I could have kept up with this blog without his amazing encouragement as well as his creative contributions, it seems appropriate to devote part of this space to wish him a very Happy Birthday ! Happy Birthday Ian!
yesterday, birdman from port city daily photo left a comment inquiring, "Block Island... what's there? Were you just on a day trip? Stay over? Shops? Artists?" so I thought, why not answer here, with more pictures!
block Island is an island off the coast of rhode Island. it is accessible by passenger ferry from long island but if you'd like to take your car you have to take a ferry from point judith. ideal for people who love to ride their bikes, it's a hilly place that is extremely bicycle friendly and discourages too many cars. the cars that do drive there drive at a much slower pace. much of the land is preserved so if you like to explore nature, go to the beach, and do some birdwatching, this is the place. there are a whole bunch of shops in old harbor which is convenient to the day trippers coming off the ferry from point judith. the beach shown above is the southerly end of crescent beach and is within walking distance from the old harbor ferry as well. if you keep walking a couple of miles, you wind up at the northerly side of crescent beach which you can see in the photo below is much more quiet.
block island is one of my favorite places to return too. I was there a few days last week and spent most of my time riding my bike, swimming, eating and reading. it is also an ideal place to catch up on sleep - it is so pitch black there at night (they discourage light pollution) and quiet, you are literally woken up by the sun. if you want to see more of block island, I will be posting a variety of photos from there over the next several days.
meanwhile, have a great thursday...

ferry to block island

the hubby & I, our son ian and doggy priscilla drove to rhode island and took the car on the ferry from point judith to block island. as we tried to maintain our balance on this rocking boat, ian captured the shot below. I love how he caught the flag flying in the wind. thanks ian!

down corn neck road in block island

crescent beach lies just beyond the shrubs on the left and below is a view of the dune grasses adjacent to the beach further south on this road. if you look carefully or click on the photo below you can see some children playing on the paths in the dunes. tomorrow I will post pics of the beach itself.
for the most part the weather was hot with grey skies while I was there last week. these photos were taken just before I left. no worries though - block island is such a beautiful quiet naturalistic type of place I find it enchanting no matter what the weather.

a flower from a block island flower box

I was lucky I had a few sunny days in block island last week. it's supposed to rain here on long island all day today and for once I am not complaining about the weather. we really do need the rain. happy monday everyone.
today's post is dedicated to both 'mellow yellow monday' and 'today's flowers' - only because I couldn't decide between the two and didn't want to miss out on either one. I know I am being selfish so I promise I will do my best to visit everyone who is participating. please click on the links to join in the fun.

block island shadows

I just got back from a few days on block island where unfortunately my internet connection wasn't very reliable so I have missed visiting many of your wonderful blogs!
the above photo was a scene that I stumbled upon while out and about on my bicycle while touring there the other day. I loved the shadow behind the decorative anchor and immediately thought of tracy's meme, 'shadow shot sunday'. if you'd like to see more shadows please visit  and join in the fun.

sunset over robert moses

the sky was so rich I got lucky with this one, the colors here are straight out of the camera.
this is a really nice way to end a day. I wish I could do it more often.

more from whoa nellie

remember that elvis bust from that cool store 'whoa nellie' out in montauk? I thought you might get a kick out seeing some of their beatles and barbra streisand memorabilia. can you imagine seeing barbra streisand perform at a free concert in central park in 1967? ...what about the beatles?

E is for earlobes, and a makeover for priscilla

have you ever noticed dogs don't have any earlobes? I know, this is a pretty silly post for today but I couldn't help myself - I had to show off priscilla's new haircut. she can be a bit of a tomboy so I'm sure if she had it her way she'd never see the groomer again. I actually like her hair long but we are traveling to block island for a few days and I worry about ticks and such. check out her girly girl pictures below. she looks so dainty and sweet you'd never guess she tried to chew off the repair man's hand when he got a little too close for (her) comfort. she's usually very friendly but every once in awhile she growls as loud as a dog ten times her size. I always laugh when this happens because she is so small & it just seems so ridiculous but I can tell other people do not find it very amusing.

the booth theatre and a little night music?

I'm not so crazy about this sign (see yesterdays post), but I like the photograph I took of this street scene at night. recently I saw the musical 'a little night music'. if you like romantic comedies you may want to check it out. visit broadwaybox.com and you may get lucky. I found discounted tickets in the third row orchestra section the same day I went to see the show.  the story is based on the ingmar bergman film 'smiles of a summer night' and the music is written by stephen sondheim. not only was 'a little night music' a visual delight, the actors were amazing and their voices were incredible.
sorry I didn't have a nice shot of the walter kerr theatre to match my post!

is it wrong to pick a show by the way its signage is designed? I think this may be my next musical.

august shadows

just a big old tree hanging out over someone's lawn. I love big old trees.
as you can see, the grass has taken quite a beating this summer with the lack of rain here on the island.

a.t. stewart exchange

I love consignment shops and this is probably the prettiest I've ever been too. everything is both beautiful and beautifully displayed. I found a pretty necklace and an old fashioned bank. the shop is entirely run by volunteers who are most helpful and the best part is all proceeds benefit the garden city historical society.

manhattan's bryant park

I love how this woman stared straight into the camera as I photographed her. she reminded me
of the famous painting by edouard manet, 'bar at the folies bergères. this was taken as I walked past bryant park early last thursday evening. a few steps away I looked up and saw these amazing trees just inside the park, a beautiful oasis in the middle of a noisy city.

delectable

with the exception of reporting about another favorite pizza place, I don't think I've ever photographed an actual slice to post here on LIDP. hard to believe since new york is so well known for its excellent pizza! I stopped at gino's in farmingdale yesterday to get a slice for lunch, and as I was thinking about how delectable it was I suddenly remembered today's letter is 'D' for the abc wednesday meme. if you'd like too, please visit and check out other 'D' representations.

august halloween

this happens every year, so why am I surprised every year when it happens again? I go to the store looking for flip flops, a reasonable expectation for this time of year, and what do I see? halloween decorations lining the shelves, a sad reminder that summer is so short lived. these are kind of cute though aren't they?

a mellow yellow nyc street scene

it's hard to capture a quiet moment in manhattan but these two just seemed to be in their own little world, somehow isolated from all of the surrounding hustle and bustle.
my last mellow yellow post also happened to include a pedicab. for more of all things yellow, please visit mellow yellow monday.

manhattan reflections

I don't think I've ever been in this part of the city when it isn't deluged with cars and people.
at 11 pm, the theatre district in manhattan is so lit up and so crowded it almost looks like it's in the middle of the afternoon, a weird sensation when you've just come from inside a darkened theatre.

sand castle man

freaky huh?
ok, so does anyone have any idea what happened to july? today is already the 5th day of august, which is something that is a little hard for me to grasp at this moment. why does summer always seem to be the shortest season of the four?

C is is for central... as in grand central station in new york city

it was so crowded around here the other night you would have thought you were standing in the middle of grand central station. only I was sitting in traffic just outside grand central station (and it was still very crowded) when I was lucky enough to get this shot. doesn't the chrysler building add that extra special touch to this background?
if you are new to this blog, you should know I love visiting manhattan, it's close proximity makes it a wonderful benefit for people who live on long island.

suspicious activity?

as I drove toward this toll booth the other day I couldn't help notice the sign (upper right) asking those who see any suspicious activity to call the one eight hundred number. this september it will be nine years since 911 and I still haven't gotten used to signs like this, reminders of a day we shall all never forget.

sunflowers facing the sun

what is it about a field of flowers that is so wonderful? these all happen to be turned towards the sun, but they are equally beautiful from behind. if you double click on this photo , you can see more sunflower detail too!
a big thanks to ian for today's flower post. he was in upstate new york this weekend and this is some of the beauty he was lucky enough to experience (thanks to a loving aunt and uncle).
