saint peter's sky

if you click on this photo you can see the front steps of saint peter's basilica are closed off to the public. you can only enter or exit through the front doors if you walk up the stairs on either side. when I visited years ago the public was able to walk right up the middle of the front steps. though it may seem a small change, it creates a different atmosphere where I find the feeling of the square much less open. I am thinking it must be a security measure.

It is an impressive complex.

Terrific shot! I have to agree with Martha, it is and impressive complex! Security needs have changed so much in the last 10 years. Life surely isn't as simple as it once was.

Have a great weekend, Lily!

Yes, it's a shame, isn't it, that now you can't quite go close to many monuments either for security reasons or vandalism issues.

Nice shot and a beautiful sky....this brings back great memories. The main entrance was closed when I went in 2006 also. I thought it was because of the Easter crowd, but it probably was for security.

That photo is like a postcard. And for some reason, got me thinking of that great film, "Roman Holiday."
Looks like a security measure to me too. I have lately seen many beautiful places getting enclosures/boundaries to keep visitors at distance.

Beautiful skywatch! First time I ever visited the Vatican, you could just walk right in (no security, and no plexiglass surrounding the Pieta either). A bit sad, but if that's what it takes to protect all this beauty, so be it.

Fantastic photo, the sky is so blue. What a shame the public are being roped off from more and more wonderful sites all the time.
