tree men and hurricanes

most people are now saying us long islanders experienced a rather wicked hurricane. people are still without power and or their cable and sadly, last I heard, nine people have died due to fallen trees. I also heard 250 trees fell in the town of hempstead during the storm. & that is just one town. as I write this winds are still gusting at 43 mph. you may want to click on this photo to get a better view of the man working towards the top of this tree. the size of a tree can be deceiving. just take a look at the pile of  logs on the front lawn. these guys have their work cut out for them.

Can't even count the number of hurricanes I've lived through on LI, and this storm caused the worst damage I've ever seen! Guess your trees are all intact, Lily?

We do get hurricanes Sylvia, but 60 mph winds are unusual. & your thoughts are much appreciated, thank you.
: )
Alexa, I think we were just lucky. though I have been hearing of neighborhoods with trees down along entire blocks (like your Monday post described), thankfully, no damage here.
I don't think anyone expected the storm to be so bad!

Baaad storm. That tall tree could inflict a LOT of damage, but I hope it is healthy and firmly rooted.

A photo that tells all.

This winter seems to be worse than most on Long Island and the North East.

Why don't they bury their electric wires underground? I mean, all the time people are without power - it's like never ending on Long Island.

Great photo of an unfortunate tree.

That pile comes from that single tree? It was huge... I hope the weather is calmer now, if not beautiful.

That's an amazing shot.
So sad that so many trees were lost. It looks to me that the home owners of this one were very lucky that it didn't come down on their roof.

Hi everyone,
The sun made an appearance this morning and the winds have actually died down, YAy!

Wolynski,
I wish they would bury the lines. It was poor planning from the get go.
Long Island Power Authority aka LIPA would do the work, but each town would have to foot the bill and at this point the cost is astronomical.

Bobbie, I think a branch did hit their roof, it looked like there was a slight indentation on it that was hard to see in this photo. Either way I'm sure the owners felt it was too close for comfort after the hurricane.

our electric co workers were up in cherry pickers during the height of the storm
thanks to them our power was only out for a few hours
it was a wicked storm here in NJ and by you
and poor Westchester
an entire street of historic trees was lost
I hate losing trees

Great shot, unfortunate that you had the opportunity to take it.

yeah, I was out driving (to and fro on the Belt Water, er, Parkway, no less!) All Day on Saturday, it was CRAZY. Barrels and pylons meant to divert traffic away from extra deep potholes and flooded areas were rolling all around the road in the wind. There were trees down all over the place in Brooklyn...but we got by w no loss of electricity (yay).

VERY sad to lose trees. VERY.
Great photo!
Hurricanes looks scary! It's very sad that so many trees were cut down... Fortunately the house is safe.

I love this house architecture!

That was a pretty bad storm. Our power went off a couple of times over the weekend thankfully not for long. Your picture graphically tells the story. The last two days have been beautiful here. I hope it's now the same in Long Island.

oh boy, what a tragic scene?
It was nuts here, too. We were all hunkered down, waiting for the windows to crash in. Terrible storm!

In one week we have gone from one extreme to the other. Amazing!
How sad! The weather this year has been so strange all over. The 'twister' that passed through my area a while back did minimal damage by comparison. Hope the worst is over for you.
Hugs and blessings,
