tappan zee bridge over hudson river reflections

yesterday was a beautiful day and from what I've heard, today will be as well. isn't it amazing how blue skies and sunshine can change one's perspective on things? though I've been over this bridge a bunch of times, I'm not sure I've ever noticed it quite this way before yesterday's sunshine.

a july sky

I noticed these clouds while driving down old country road in westbury last week. I love big puffy cloud skies. if you'd like to gaze at more wondrous skies from all around the world or if you'd like to add your own sky, please visit the skywatch friday meme, thanks to klaus and his team, sandy, wren, fishing guy, and sylvia.

another view of the beach in montauk

as you can see this is quite different from the beach in yesterday's post. in actuality they both exist along the same shoreline and most of this beach is smooth and easy to walk on just like this picture shows.

montauk's rocky beach

whenever I stay in montauk I feel compelled to take very long walks on the beach. someday I plan on spending an entire day doing so. my plan will most definitely include stopping for a picnic lunch as well as some serious rock and shell collecting. just thought you'd like to know.
this shot is from a shorter walk I took this past june. it's on the south shore about a mile east of the beach resorts that are located in the center of town. most of the beach here is all sand until you get to this stretch of rocky terrain that can be a little tricky walking over. it is so worth it.

today's post is dedicate to the letter B. if you'd like to see other representations of the letter B or if you'd like to add your own B representation please visit 'abc wednesday'.

a newly paved bike trail in massapequa park

yesterday I wrote about the massapequa preserve. here is a sampling of what the newly paved trail looks like. I went back for another bike ride after dinner last evening. it was much cooler and the path was teeming with activity. I've never seen so many dragonflies in one place. I felt like I was being followed. they were so big, at first I thought they were small birds!
for more photos from my trail expedition, please visit my long island daily photo tumblr blog.

massapequa preserve

how hot was your weekend? it was exremely hot on long island and it seemed like you either needed to stay in air conditioning or you had to be somewhere near water in order to endure the heat.
this was the massapequa preserve yesterday around ten am. I rode my bike there to get some exercise. when I stopped for a water break on a small bridge this was my view.

water tower at night with reflections

yesterday started out pretty enough then before noon the sky turned grey and drizzly. so when the sun made a very late afternoon appearance I went to my favorite beach. it was late so I stayed until they shut the lights off (har-har).
anyway, this is what the water tower looks like reflected off of the sand. I try my best to ignore the other tower.

a manhattan sky for today

photos can be deceiving. didn't the street in yesterday's post look so quiet? this photo was taken from the same corner just seconds later. as you can see, it was a lot busier at this intersection than my first photo leads you to believe.

the gateway to long island...

I should say, one of the gateways to long island - at least from manhattan, that is. earlier this week I posted pictures of my journey down 32nd street towards penn station. this is the view right before you cross over 7th avenue to get to it. if you look closely you will also notice part of the sign for madison square garden, a large arena housed above the train station and mainly used for sporting events and concerts.
only one more day before friday! what are your plans for this weekend?

before the feast

saint christopher's feast in baldwin is advertising rides for the kids, live music & great raffle prizes. it starts today and continues through sunday. what does this have to do with the letter A you might ask? I just thought the feast looked pretty Awesome all quiet and dimly lit.

early morning beach walk

every year as summer approaches, I think of how I'll bring my son to the beach and we'll go for a walk before we start our day. this year I finally did it. this is what the beach looked like when we first got there. the clouds were moving towards the east as we followed. on the way back we faced blue skies as illustrated by the photo below. by this time you can see the lifeguards just starting their day .

a mellow yellow pedicab

I found this while continuing my walk down 32nd street (see yesterday's post) towards penn station. I love how it's painted the same taxi cab yellow as a typical nyc cab is.

a manhattan bridge in the sky

Manhattan Sky Bridge

a pedestrian bridge floats over 32nd street in manhattan just down the block from penn station. I walk under this as I make my way to the station when I travel back to long island by train. I love how the woman in red is looking straight into my camera.
please pop on over to san francisco bay daily photo to check out the "sunday bridge series". thanks for hosting louis la veche!

reflections at the library cafe

it's hard to believe that this used to be the library I frequented as a child. I love that the owners kept the original building intact and turned it into a thriving restaurant that is reasonably priced. this is the view from the balcony inside the restaurant. as you can see there are some pretty colored light reflections throughout this photo.

a long island sky

before I started this daily photo blog I used to look up at the sky on a fairly regular basis. I could never get over the fact that despite living on such a traffic congested island where there seems to be an almost compulsive need to build onto every square inch of land, you could easily turn your thoughts to serenity and peace by the simple act of gazing up at the sky.
soon after this blog was born, I stumbled upon the 'skywatch friday meme'. it seemed like the perfect place for me to document my experiences of looking upwards. why not join in the fun I thought, I've always enjoyed this habit of looking and seeing what is 'up' and now I would have an instant venue to share those images with others.
today, 'skywatch friday' is celebrating 3 years of skywatching. thank you klaus, sandy, wren, fishing guy and sylvia for making this possible every week!
below are some of my favorite skies I have found over long island. please tell me which one you like the best. & by all means, please visit skywatch friday to share your sky too!

hanging in an ice cream parlour

maybe if I indulged in some ice cream I would have remembered the name of this place in rockville centre. I was so full from dinner I just couldn't - even if I wanted too. two hours later I was thinking of my friend eating a giant cone covered in chocolate sprinkles. she said it was delicious, just like homemade. I guess I will have to revisit and report back here when I do!

zesty summer salad

I know this isn't the greatest photo, but this salad is such a good recipe I had to share it. & everyone loved its sweet hot, yet refreshing flavor when I served it over last weekend for our traditional family summer barbecue.
I believe the key ingredient is the tabasco sauce (and the fresh corn). I found the recipe by googling corn bean salad and up popped rachel ray's link, thanks rachel ray!
ms. ray used frozen corn while I opted for fresh, boiling it for ten minutes and then immediately running it under cold water and letting it drain. for some reason I always feel the need to tweak a recipe & fortunately this time it worked out well. please note there were no black olives or jarred tomato sauce in this salad. I am just a very messy cook!

anytown usa

doesn't this look like it could be out west somewhere in a small town with  little population? I took this while waiting at a stop light at a very hectic intersection in the busy town of hempstead here on long island. you can see the woman practically jogging across the street. I would too if I had to cross this rather large intersection.
this was taken on one of those 100 degree days we had last week & I definitely noticed a difference in people's driving - like everyone seemed to be driving  more crazy than usual!
and although the temperature went down the last couple of days, it's gotten very humid again. personally I'd rather take the 100 degree days with less humidity. dry heat is so much more bearable to me. it must be the blue skies like this one that always seem to accompany it.

shadows on the dunes

same beach as yesterday only as I take the picture my back is facing the sun. I love the spots of green dune grass scattered around the fence mixing with the colors of the shadows.

stairway to heaven

this photo was taken recently while walking on the beach in montauk. there are some very expensive ocean front homes at the top of this staircase. I was standing at the waters edge as I shot this photo. personally I would settle for a home within walking distance to the sea.

why did the geese cross the road?

at a very busy intersection, this family of geese cross this road safely. I actually drove by them as they stood on the curb strip when my son spotted the mother about to step onto the road. I quickly handed ian the camera and he took this photo from the backseat. he had just one chance. so thanks ian for a great shot! and thanks geese, for looking both ways before you put your lives on the line.
it was heartening to see the traffic take notice and slow down so the geese could cross. not an easy thing for a steady stream of speeding vehicles to do - especially at this intersection.
in other news, we are still in the midst of an incredible heat wave. supposedly it should get a little cooler friday and saturday. has it been hotter than normal where you live?

hither hills state park and the yellow line

a long line of campers waited outside hither hills state park to begin their holiday. I'm not sure if it's just a suburban legend or not but I  have heard if you want to camp out at this beach you need to make your reservations a year ahead of time. judging by the long line of vehicles waiting to get in, this rumor just might be true.
this also happens to be another state park where you can use your empire pass to get in. I wrote about it here yesterday.

it's a hot one today...

so please, stay as cool as you can. I hear the temperature is supposed to go up to 100 degrees. At least it's not too humid out. I took this photo while standing in the water at robert moses beach yesterday. I'm glad I made the time to go. unfortunately I wound up sleeping on the beach instead of walking on the beach! did you know it costs $10 for admission nowadays? if you get an empire pass, it's $65 for the year which allows you to visit state parks all over new york. I opted for the pass. check out the above link for more info about where to get one.

uncle sam at the saint james general store

I took this photograph back in december thinking I would save it for the fourth of july. I know today is the 5th, but since the 4th fell on a sunday here in the states, today is the day the banks, library, post office and all the rest of the government offices are closed in celebration of the 4th.
as for me, I will be working on a painting all day. if I make some progress, I hope to get away for a walk on the beach. whatever it is you are doing, I hope your day is a wonderful one.
on a side note, I am actually writing this sunday night & if you heard the racket outside that I am hearing now, you would think we were in a war zone.

elvis is in the building

I was eleven years old when it was announced that elvis would be performing at the nassau coliseum here in long island. my brother said he'd let me go with him if I could find a way to pay for my ticket. to say I was excited was an understatement - all I had to do was find a way to get the ten dollars I needed for the ticket. maybe a week or so later & much to my  total amazement, I found a ten dollar bill lying in the street! I can still remember my brothers look of disbelief as I burst through the door shouting to all of my family that I was going to see elvis!
it was towards the end of 'the kings' carreer when I found myself standing on my chair throughout the entire concert that fateful evening at the nassau coliseum. but let me assure you, though he was not the outer elvis we saw in the movies, elvis' inner man did not disappoint. he was amazing.

moon over montauk

I wish I was having dinner here tonight. then again, the moon wouldn't look like this! while dining at gosman's dock in montauk last friday evening, I looked up from my crabcakes just in time to see the moon in its full glory.

shark attack on the long island expressway

luckily my husband was driving so I got a chance to snap a few pictures of this giant shark. the man behind the wheel on this thing certainly looks happy to pose for my camera. I'm guessing he was driving this display around hoping to promote atlantis marine world. I brought my son there when he was much younger. he loved it.
