winter bird bath

winter is definitely upon us. at least there is the saving grace of the sun setting later, allowing us all to breathe a collective sigh of relief with the knowledge of longer days getting longer even if only by a few minutes each day. just when I think I can't bear another 4:30 sunset, the added light we experience when autumn turns to winter is so helpful in weathering the colder months of the year.
I thought this was a suitable winter long island garden as well as a good odd shot to include in katney's kaboodle. I don't often get to see birds that are about to go skating! sorry...I know that is really corny.

Just yesterday my husband mentioned that it wasn't so dark at 4:30 anymore!

When the birdbath water is frozen, I go out and try to remove it, then add slightly warm water. It's only good for about half hour but the birds and squirrels seem happy.

Here it is dark around 3:30..., but it is getting better!

How about skates for the birds in the bath? :-)

PS The guy carrying the car was supposed to be Obelix, a well-known (in Europe at least) French cartoon character.

Too cold to bathe, even the birds have something to look forward to ;-)

Auntie M bought a heater for her bird bath. I doubt birds would take a bath in the cold weather, heater or no. ;-) PGma

I've always wanted one of those bird baths with built in heating to melt the ice. Love your picture.

An icey, quiet bath just now, but it holds the promise of Spring! Looking forward to more sunlight (between showers) here as well. Happy New Year!

There's a positive side to everything. I noticed this evening it wasn't as dark when I left to take my English class. I prefer the cold to the dark..

This reminds me of Snoopy ice skating on the frozen bird bath in Peanuts :)

Thank you for visiting my odd shot.

I read on an Alaskan blog that they put a heated bowl of water out for the animals and birds - finding water is very difficult for them in winter when everything is frozen.
It's a beautiful photo though. I love these contrasts to our summer. Today it was hot - 32 C but so warm that we ate dinner outside tonight. It stays light until about 9.00 pm because we have daylight saving at the moment.
