at kim's spendless cleaners

please click on photo to enlarge for greater detail

I couldn't help notice these wonderful shadows and colors so I asked the proprietress if I could snap a photo. I am not surprised she happily obliged, she is such a happy person you can't help but smile when you see her. as you leave, she actually rushes to the door to hold it open for you. she really does make the act of picking up one's dry cleaning rather enjoyable.
I usually wait for sunday to post a shadow shot, but it is already sunday in australia where the lovely hey harriet, host of today's meme resides, so I figured, why wait?

last skywatch for january

we can have gray skies for an entire day and then suddenly when you least expect it, the sky can change, much like it did the other night. I noticed this particular evenings sudden change when driving to the train station, hence this snapshot taken while waiting in the parking lot.
if you'd like to see more beautiful skies from all around the world, please go here.
today is the last friday of january. do you think this month went by quickly?

pink bears

please click on this photo to see greater detail.

...right next to the bleach. this was taken at my local waldbaums grocery store. every holiday they have a special section with gifts and treats for the customers to choose from. it's kind of nice for people who don't have time to do a lot of shopping.
today's post is part of blue's true colors meme featuring the color pink. please go here to check out more pink themed posts. thanks blue! & happy thursday everyone.

b is for birds

please click on this photo to see the geese more clearly

I don't ever remember seeing these geese anywhere when I was growing up on long island. now it is common place to see them virtually everywhere there is some sort of open space, usually school fields or open park land. the buzz is, long island has succumbed to over development leaving very little room for the geese. it's unfortunate the geese are being crowded out. have you ever seen them fly in formation? lately everyday around 5:30 pm, I hear them flying over my house. they are fascinating to watch.
if you'd like to see more representations for the letter B, please go here. have a great wednesday everyone!

illumination

please click on photo to see greater detail.

our postal service often parks their trucks in our towns parking lot. it can be rather bothersome when you need a parking space and there are numerous empty spaces marked "reserve" for the post office. whatever the case may be, I thought the reflective signage looked kind of neat illuminated by my camera's flash.
this is just a small bit of my world. if you'd like to see other bits from all around the world, please go here. happy tuesday everyone!

chicks and bunnies

remember on new years eve I wrote that spring was only 80 days away? as of today, spring is 54 days away! but easter is much farther away. easter is 77 days away! so why do stores have easter items for sale now? we still haven't celebrated valentines day nor st. patricks day for that matter.
so what's my point you may ask? the point is...this definitely appears to be "odd". and being that today is "odd shot" monday, I felt it imperative that I contribute. please go here and check out katney's kaboodle to see some other oddities, that is, if you're into that sort of thing.

dancing hearts and cupids

walking to pick up my clothing from the cleaners, I felt truly lucky happening upon this window display for a local dance studio. between the sun and its lovely shadows, the hearts and cupids seemed to come alive. happy sunday everyone!

spring is in the air...

it may seem early, but spring is only 56 days away! that's a little over a month and a half. I guess technically we're not even half way there yet, but a girl can dream eh? and yesterdays 40 degree weather seemed to help aid my delusion as well. maybe this little quote from the Olympic middle-distance runner Doug Larson may help us through another cold day,
"Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush."

snowflake in the sky

if you click on this photo, you can see the snowflake more easily.

taken wednesday night sometime around 4:30 pm somewhere on jericho turnpike in mineola. I was noticing the light in the sky was such a beautiful blue and then I noticed the pretty lit up snowflake. can you see it? I am glad to see one town has thought to leave their holiday decorations up a little longer than most. they sure are cheery.

turquoise belts at the pretty new thrift shop

while on my quest for something turquoise for today's true colors meme, I remembered the
turquoise monkey I photographed at the st. vincent de paul thrift shop last november. this prompted me to check out the pretty new thrift shop in farmingdale, where I found these very unique belts. note to self, thrift shops are great places to find the color turquoise!
and while we're on the subject, not too long after I posted those monkeys last november, much to my surprise, I happened upon
here where you can see one of my favorite supremely talented bakers who also happened to be inspired by those thrift shop monkeys as well. I thought you might enjoy checking it out, especially if you like cookies and the color turquoise.
and please, do go here as well for other turquoise inspirations thanks to blue over at true colors.

a is for airport

if you click on this photo to enlarge it, you can see icicles hanging off of the planes wings!

so check it out, I happen to have republic airport in my very own backyard! if I wasn't participating in today's abc wednesday meme, I might not have ventured over to new highway where I was able to spy this nice looking plane parked not too far from the runway. you can also see the control tower in the background.
if you'd like to see other representations of the letter a, thanks to mrs. nesbitt, you may go here.

today is a new day

please click on this photo to see greater details of natures beauty

like all other long islanders, I woke up to natures beauty monday morning. as I was letting our doggie priscilla outside,(she loves to play in the snow) I noticed the sun just peeking up over my neighbors fence. I thought a new beginning was the perfect image for inauguration day. today's post is part of a wonderful meme called "that's my world". our new president Barack Obama is pretty big news around these parts, so his inauguration seemed like the obvious choice for today's meme.

saturday night at barnes and noble

please click on photo to see greater detail.

while returning a book, I decided to look for a valentines display for LIDP. well, I found the display, you can see that below. but what was really neat was that while photographing this other display on discounted health and fitness books, a little girl ran in front of me & did a twirl then skipped away. she seemed completely oblivious to me. it was the cutest thing. afterwards I looked around and saw that most of the people there were just hanging out quietly reading. it brought back memories of the many trips I have taken to the bookstore just to hang out. where do you like to hang out?

how about some coffee with those bagels?

and not just any coffee, but new england coffee! rummaging through my archives this morning I was looking for a shadow shot when I came across this photo from my recent trip to vermont. located in manchester you have to climb an outside staircase in order to gain entrance to a place appropriately called up for breakfast. it is probably the coziest atmosphere I have ever eaten in outside of my home. the food is absolutely delicious, though I think a little pricey for breakfast fare. check out the french toast below.

toasty warm bagels at fairway

if you live in or "on" long island you can count on delicious bagels being one of the fringe benefits. I absolutely love the bagels at fairway. I usually go around 8 am & they always seem hot from the oven. like the apples I posted about here back in november, just looking at these beauties make you want to eat one while driving home. can you tell poppy seed is my favorite? where do you get your bagels?

a skywatch memory

please click on photo for greater detail.

this skywatch photo was taken last friday on long beach just before noon. the temperatures were beyond frigid. despite the cold, I am glad I was able to go. we live so close to the beaches here on long island it seems a shame not to experience it during every season.

snow, with madonna and child

Saint-Kilian's-Madonna-and-Child-in-Farmingdale,NY
please click on the photo to see greater detail

technically this sculpture of the madonna and child isn't black, though it looks like it is from a distance during the day. you can see its true colors at night when the spotlight that shines on it illuminates the green patina that has started to form over the last few years. dedicated to the memory of rose ferrante from her loving family, this sculpture has been standing in front of st. kilian's parish in farmingdale since 1998. sorry for the late post today. I wanted to get a shot of this while the snow was falling.

please go here for more interesting snapshots from true colors weekly photo meme. in case you haven't guessed it, today's color is black! happy thursday everyone.

zen and the art of the perfect backswing

Bethpage-Golf-Course-in-Winter

while pondering the letter Z for today's abc wednesday post, one thing led to another leading me back to bethpage state park. I was thinking of the last time tiger woods played there and how exciting it was to watch him and the other masters play. there is almost a 'zen' like quality about these men. they seem to possess a type of focused mindfulness that one might witness in a zen master. then I came across this superbly funny shawn clement golf video that illustrates just how people who love to golf will look for any opportunity to improve their game, even if it's in the middle of winter.
my other post about the park was back in early june of 2008. you can see that one here.

old westbury pond revisited

just around the corner from yesterdays horses, my son & I took post road to get to northern parkway, a shortcut through old westbury. back in october I first posted an autumn photo of this pond here. today's photo was taken from the opposite side of the pond.
it is a wonderful part of my world, a little slice of what I see as beauty here on long island.

horses on the long island expressway

photo courtesy of ian, please click on photo for greater detail.

now that's not something I see everyday! OK, I am exaggerating a tad bit, it actually was the service road, but still.
yet there they were and only too happy to pose for us smiling and waving. my dear son had the honors, since I was driving. it was this past saturday, the snow had just begun to fall, it really was quite lovely seeing them. though indeed a bit odd. but then again, perhaps not odd for this old westbury neighborhood. if you'd like to see more odd shots, please go here & visit katney's kaboodle. Happy Monday everyone!

like a good cigar in a humidor...

please click on photo to enlarge for greater detail.

is what these guitars reminded me of over at guitar center in carle place. when you first enter the establishment, you can't help but notice a separate room with it's own door. specially made, the mostly wood room is where the center hangs all of their acoustic guitars. I thought the display was rather striking. once inside the room, we heard a few musicians playing some of these beautiful instruments. it was pretty neat. I thought the shadows the guitars created were neat too. if you'd like to see more beautiful shadows, please go here.

aftermath

walking priscilla through our neighborhood the other day, I found what I thought the perfect subject for this saturday's photohunt. this weeks topic is "aftermath". all over long island people are leaving their christmas trees outside by their curb strips. this year we spent a few extra dollars to get a frasier. the guy at the tree place said they last extra long. sure enough, our tree is doing quite well. I probably won't take it down until sunday.
if you are interested in other "aftermath" photos, please go here.

skywatch at starbucks

I know, it's the third window shot in a row. please enlarge to see more details!

I find the sky over long island to be one of the things I like best about living here. I could be stuck in traffic on the expressway or the parkway or hempstead turnpike with hundreds of other cars and seemingly ugly surroundings until I look up into the sky and see some instant beauty. do you enjoy looking at the sky?

purple haze

that is what I think of every time I drive by this tanning salon in farmingdale. just the other day I heard a doctor talk about going to a tanning salon as a way of getting his vitamin D during the winter time. he said he tans at least once a week. supposedly many people are vitamin D deficient. personally I eat fish oil to get mine. do you ever take vitamins?
I was fortunate to get a comment from poopsie blue today informing me that my post fits in with her, my true colors blog. the color for today is purple! so if you happen to be interested in the color purple, please go here to see beautiful representations of one of my favorite colors!

y is for yarns

today is abc wednesday and the letter is Y. right away I thought of the word yarn. lucky for me I just happened to have a photo from my recent christmas shopping trip to sayville that illustrates this word perfectly. isn't the gold lettering beautiful? this is such a simple classic design and so very effective.

back to school and work

please click on this photo to see greater detail of this school bus in transit.

this post is part of that's my world, a meme that takes place every tuesday.
yesterday was the first day back at school for most long island children after their holiday break. it was also back to work for many people who were lucky enough to have last friday off. I for one dreaded the thought of returning to my regular schedule. once the alarm went off I was unusually awake at six AM. it must have been the extra sleep I was getting the last few days! so, were you able to get a break from your regular routine?

winter bird bath

winter is definitely upon us. at least there is the saving grace of the sun setting later, allowing us all to breathe a collective sigh of relief with the knowledge of longer days getting longer even if only by a few minutes each day. just when I think I can't bear another 4:30 sunset, the added light we experience when autumn turns to winter is so helpful in weathering the colder months of the year.
I thought this was a suitable winter long island garden as well as a good odd shot to include in katney's kaboodle. I don't often get to see birds that are about to go skating! sorry...I know that is really corny.
if you are interested in more of these types of odd pics, please go

shadows and animal tracks

please click on photo to see greater details of wildlife evidence.

how exciting it was to come across evidence of wildlife while out in my suburban backyard yesterday. I found these animal tracks while looking for shadows. I can see that the small grouping of many paw prints in the snow are from my yorkie priscilla, but the pair of the longer prints towards the left must be from a raccoon. hopefully they both weren't out on the patio at the same time. priscilla has her rabies shot, but still...besides, she only weighs eleven pounds. I don't think I would have noticed these prints if I wasn't drawn to the light and shadows while taking photos yesterday. do you ever encounter wild animals in your backyard?

a hill with a view, and some hope...

please click on this photo for a spectacular view!

last night found me sleeping way before bedtime so I never posted for today! I'm afraid I am fighting off a bug that has been traveling through my house. I feel hopeful today though. I woke up late and feel much better. the next dilemma was, what to post? perusing my photos from my recent vermont getaway I thought I had to share this one. when my family & I found this hill to go sledding on, I stood at the top of it and took a deep breath taking in the fresh air and scenery. I guess that is what they mean by breathtaking!
anyway, today I am participating in a photo hunt hosted by tnchick. The theme for today is hope. I find nature in general hopeful. where do you find hope? for more hopeful posts, check out the woman who started it all right here.

skywatching in upstate new york

video
thanks to ian for sharing his video skywatch.

I confess, this isn't long island! in case you are new to this site, I like to share places I travel too from here on the big island. this is route 7 in hoosick falls new york, a mere three hours drive from manhattan. my son shot this short video while we were on our way to vermont last sunday
and I thought it would be a perfect skywatch for today. I found the scenery outstanding. this also happens to be long island daily photo's first video post. I hope you enjoy it.
thanks to the good people over at skywatch friday,

happy first friday of the new year everyone!

giunta's meat farms

it's kind of funny that I would be writing a post about a meat farm, simply because I am a vegetarian. but alas I do try to be as unbiased a representative as possible for long island daily photo. and besides, this is hardly the picture one would expect to find at a meat farm, which is precisely why I am posting this. giunta's meat farms happen to have an extraordinary amount of fresh produce. in fact, upon entering their store in farmingdale, all you see is fresh produce, & a wide variety of it too. giuntas also happens to be one of the cleanest grocery stores I have ever set foot in.
anyway, I hope you are all enjoying the first day of our new year. happy new year to you and yours everyone. may your year be filled with an abundance of health and happiness.
