my neighbors tree

please click on photo for greater detail

does anyone have any idea what type of tree this is? a hint is that they require special care. ok, maybe that isn't the greatest hint. anyway, I have at least three neighbors that have this same type of tree on their property. so I think they are fairly popular on long island. I love the leaves on them too.

Is it a fig tree?

Hard to tell. Possibly a mulberry? Does it have fruit - small black berries.

I say 'fig' as well! Thanks for visiting me. Photos from Belgrade coming up, since Radovan is back home.

Let us know what the tree is!!

It is definitely a fig tree. It has been beautifully pruned but perhaps it is too young to produce fruit. It looks like a normal fig to me so the fruit should be luscious when it does have some.

Hmmm... I have no idea. It looks fairly young. Can't wait to find out the answer.

thanks you guys for being so responsive! Yes Islipian, Bibi and Mme it is a fig tree, but a misleading one because it was pruned a couple of years ago to at least half its original size. So it's fairly mature and does indeed bear fruit. When it is about to get really cold my neighbors wrap it up in a big canvas blanket. have I mentioned I always like looking at its leaves?

Good guess Bobbie.

Paz, I'll have to go & see if you have anything for me to figure out as well!

My husband grew up on LI and his relatives grew these in Brooklyn...so I know what it is! I'll be the 4th to say it: A fig tree!

Hey! My comment coincided with your answer, Lily hydrangea, because I was grilling my husband for more details before I hit "publish your comment"! :o)
